In 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the U.S. At the time, Ben Bagdikian was called "alarmist" for pointing this out in his book, The Media Monopoly . In his 4th edition, published in 1992, he wrote "in the U.S., fewer than two dozen of these extraordinary creatures own and operate 90% of the mass media" -- controlling almost all of America's newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. He predicted then that eventually this number would fall to about half a dozen companies. This was greeted with skepticism at the time. When the 6th edition of The Media Monopoly was published in 2000, the number had fallen to six. Since then, there have been more mergers and the scope has expanded to include new media like the Internet market. More than 1 in 4 Internet users in the U.S. now log in with AOL Time-Warner, the world's largest media corporation. In 2004, Bagdikian's revised and expanded book, The New Media Monopoly , shows that only 5 huge corporations -- Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, and Viacom (formerly CBS) -- now control most of the media industry in the U.S. General Electric's NBC is a close sixth. How to write a good letter to the editor: QLD A Guide to writing awesome, powerful letters Letters to the editor of local papers are an excellent way for politicians to gauge what the public is thinking. This is a how-to guide for writing powerful and useful letters that can inform the public debate around Adani’s coal project. What makes a good letter? Some tips: ● The best letters are short, snappy and succinct - never longer than 200 words. ● Try to limit your letter to one central idea so it is clear and easy to read. Don’t be afraid to use humour if it suits! ● Good letters are timely if they are in response to a big announcement or event. This means written and sent on the same day. ● Back-up your claims with facts where appropriate. There are many resources on our website (see below for links). ● Try to weave in a personal story if you can and it is fitting. For example: ○ I’m a tourist operator on the Reef and Adani’s coal mine will put my business in jeopardy. ○ I am a teacher and see school students are very attuned to the impact of climate change on the Reef and Adani’s role in this. ○ I went to visit the Reef last year and am saddened by the fact the QLD Government is ignoring coral bleaching events in favour of more coal mining. ○ I’m a Townsville resident who has experienced the mining industry’s boom-bust cycles and I think the future of Townsville should be solar. -

Some 386 separate entries – a record – entered the competition for the prestigious awards across newspaper categories covering print, innovation, photography, marketing and a host of print and online Newspaper of the Year Awards. For the first time, PANPA announced a Sunday Newspaper of the Year. PANPA chief executive Mark Hollands said: “The entries have been outstanding. Professional excellence and a commitment to quality journalism and photography is alive and well in newspapers across our region. “Our newspapers are stunning. Yet again, these awards prove newspaper journalism is the best journalism. Quality journalism is not only confined to metropolitan newspapers. We have had fantastic entries from regional and suburban newspapers from across the Pacific. The print categories have also been hotly contested. We received over 400 entries across the Advertising, Photography, Journalism and Newspaper categories. The judges were united in compliments about the professionalism and vital contribution our publications are making to our regional communities. It was unfortunate we were unable to fully celebrate our achievements with our highlight presentation night dinner this year, but we have been able to at least recognise the success of our teams and individual winners from the Southern Regions on Queensland, with a presentation luncheon at Toowoomba on Friday, November 6. Congratulations to all who entered, and deserving acknowledgment for the winners, place-getters and highly commended recipients. Maybe we can have an extra celebration at next year’s Awards dinner scheduled to be held at Mercure Brisbane Hotel on May 28. And these Awards herald in a new era for QCPA – with almost 20 new print publications launched recently, and our Association expanding its Online Publisher Membership, providing us over 60 members covering the State. [email protected] A name can create an image that can have a powerful determining effect on an eventual outcome. In 1917, Real Estate Agent Thor Jensen decided that the name ‘Surfers Paradise’ could conjure the image of a beachside ‘Shangri-la’ in the minds of Australians. Together with Arthur Blackwood, he bought virtually uninhabited coastal land overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Elston, to the south of Southport, and sold it as ‘The Surfers Paradise Estate’. Opening a hotel a short distance from the foreshore eight years later, James Cavill embraced Jensen’s vision by naming his establishment ‘The Surfers Paradise Hotel’. Other entrepreneurs joined Cavill in catering for tourists and by the mid-1950s, the price of land at Surfers Paradise had gone ‘sky high’. The excitement continued with high-rise apartments and international-standard tourist hotels replacing much of the low-set accommodation erected a decade earlier. In commenting in 1988 that envy existed over the way Surfers Paradise had triumphed over other Gold Coast locations by possessing such a ‘promotable’ title, historian Alexander McRobbie recognised the locality’s unassailable position. CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS: METRO 20.2 CENTRAL COAST DAILY NEWSPAPER BATTLE It’s Fairfax versus News in a daily newspaper battle on the Central Coast of New South Wales: Fairfax, through Newcastle Newspapers, has invaded traditional News turf, serviced by the Cumberland title, the Express Advocate (a merger of the old Central Coast Express and the Wyong Advocate). Fairfax had been working toward the daily for nearly two years and made its first move in July 2001, buying the Sun, a weekly Central Coast free founded in 1987. It launched the Central Coast Sun Weekly in August 2001. Fairfax announced on 25 September that it would launch the daily Central Coast Herald on Saturday, 28 September. -
