1 Bishop’s Letter

I’m always deeply moved by the way the gospel of Mark describes the events immediately after Jesus’ baptism. Many of you will have heard the passage read a few Sundays ago. Mark tells us that a voice came from heaven, saying, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” And he continues, “And the Spirit immediately drove Jesus out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.”

The passage has a dark undertone: right at the start of his public ministry, Jesus is driven out into the wilderness – to the dry, dusty, inhospitable desert where there is nothing to comfor t him. And there, he is tempted by Satan: he has to face down the demons of fear, anxiety and loneliness, and - we could imagine - a deep discomfort that prepared Jesus for his Passion.

But the passage is also full of hope, because it shows us that Jesus came into the darkness and the violence of our world precisely in order to be joined to our broken-ness and our frailty, and to show us that it is possible to face it, to wrestle with it, to live through it, and to come out the other side. Whenever we find ourselves in the wilderness of disease, loneliness, joblessness, depression, or the many other things that challenge us, Jesus meets us there in order to bear our burdens with us and for us. He will wait on us as the angels waited on him, and we will not be alone. But there are things we will go through in life, demons we will have to face, because that is the reality of human existence.

The season of Lent, with all its opportunities for reflection, can sometimes bring us face to face with uncomfortable truths, but the greatest truth of all is that the depth of God’s love for us, shown in the death of Jesus on the cross, is also present in God’s gift of new life, offered to us all, in the promise and the joy of Easter Day.

Bishop Christopher

FAMILY SERVICE

Chains was the theme of the Family Service on February 1st led by Jane Parker. Before the service the children were asked to make three sets of chains – one chain with the names of people who live in their house; one chain with the names of their friends; one chain with names of people they know.

On entering the Church the congregation were asked to write their name on a strip which was then made into another chain. The Amnesty candle had been placed on the altar.

During the service Margaret Cook and Jane Parker asked the children to bring up their 9 chains and then these were all linked together to show that even though we may feel unimportant being linked together makes us strong.

David Smith and John Hobson read from the Acts of the Apostles about Peter being freed from his chains.

Reverend Joan Thornett then spoke about the Amnesty candle reminding us of people in prison who stand up for truth and mercy. She also explained how we can be chained with fear, jealousy or anger but we can also be bound with love, friendship and faith. Sometimes one link may be weak because of sadness, illness or bereavement but we should thank God that we can be bound together with positive chains.

February 1st was designated as Education Sunday but the Family Service Team will be celebrating this on March 1st at 10.00am. Local schools have been invited to this service. The theme will be Gone Missing. Everyone will be made very welcome. We look forward to seeing you.

COFFEE MORNINGS

Saturday coffee mornings are due to start again on May 2nd until October 3rd. Twenty three Saturdays to come into Church and chat, drink tea or coffee and enjoy lovely cakes.

In 2013 £1449.78 was raised and last year it was £1454.89 which is excellent. It would be a great achievement if £1500 could be raised this year. The only way we can do this is to a have a large number of willing helpers who are prepared to give up a Saturday morning and work in our beautiful kitchen. You don't have to bring home made cake - bought cake is acceptable.

You may not be a member of the congregation but would be happy to help one Saturday morning. A rota will be put at the back of the Church during April. If you are interested in helping please sign up. If you would like more information please contact the Vicarage between 1pm - 5pm, Monday - Friday. We look forward to seeing you.

Thank you.

12 ERESBY HALL NEWS

The residents of Eresby Hall celebrated Dignity Day on February 1st with a special tea – a Digni-tea. Residents were asked to write on a paper leaf what the word dignity meant to them and then it was placed on a Dignity tree. Some residents thought that it meant being able to help themselves and not always relying on carers; to be treated as equals.

The thermometer in the entrance hall now shows that £870 has been raised for the Remembrance garden and Margaret Palmer has organised a raffle to raise more money. She hopes to raise £1000 and to start work when the weather improves.

At a recent resident's meeting Connie and George were elected as the two resident representatives. Congratulations to them.

Residents celebrated Burns night with Haggis , neeps and cockaleekie soup . The Haggis was addressed by Bill who is a good friend of Eresby. A lovely night was had by all.

Congratulations to Helena Shelton,Manager, who will leaving Eresby to go to pastures new as Care Director for County Care. We will be very sorry to see her go but wish her every happiness in her new job.

My Mother Kept A Garden Mothering My Mother kept a garden, a garden of the heart, Sunday She planted all the good things th that gave my life it's start. 15 March She turned me to the sunshine and encouraged me to dream, Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem... And when the winds and rain came, she protected me enough- But not too much because she knew I'd need to stand up strong and tough. Her constant good example always taught me right from wrong- Markers for my pathway that will last a lifetime long. I am my Mother's garden. I am her legacy- And I hope today she feels the love reflected back from me

I promised you five more ‘Marks of a Diocese committed to Developing Disciples’. How are these five seen in our churches?

6 Good practice in facilitating learning and formation is developed. Do you feel appropriately resourced and enabled to nurture others in faith?

7 Gifts of leadership are recognised and developed among all the baptised. Are you hiding your light under a bushel? Have you identified gifts in yourself which are not being used?

8 Innovation and experiment are encouraged in mission, ministry and discipleship. Have you got an idea for an event which you think might be laughed at? Doing the same thing again and again might not be the best way forward. Let us know your thoughts and see how we can build on them.

9 Specific diocesan policies and plans promote discipleship development. Have you heard about the Developing Discipleship Programme? Will you get involved? You do not need to be a leader or a member of the PCC. The programme is for everybody.

10 Diocesan resources are committed to the development of the whole people of God. What about our Deanery resources and our Parish resources. Keeping a building open is important, but is it the best way of developing the Kingdom of God?

These Marks of Discipleship are an important starting point for our discussions about our work in the Parish. Expect to hear more about them in our APCMs, our PCCs and in our services!

First Wednesday each month Holy Communion

What a Group. Thank you, everyone

All the A.G.M’s are complete and we certainly had some brilliant discussions and ideas. The individuality of our parishes whilst retaining such group ethos is wonderful. You all work so hard in many different ways to keep your parishes and your group working. We have said goodbye to some churchwardens and treasurers who have all worked unstintingly for their church and group. Thankfully people have stepped in and offered their help in many ways. If we made a list of all the people needed to perform all the duties and jobs necessary for your church and group, I do not think this entire 24 magazine would have enough pages. To list the people to thank would take the pages in 12 Chronicles and risk the danger of forgetting someone. To each and everyone one of you, THANK YOU. You will all have heard that I will be retiring in 2016 and so this will be a very busy year, not that the preceding ones could have been a lot busier. I was told by a local man that the “old hands” used to say it took 30 years to be accepted in the country, he added that I had done very well to have managed it in 17! Of course many of you help, support, encourage and defend: your village your group, me in so many ways. But for varying reasons the church and statements of faith are not for you.

The South Ormsby Group is very hospitable, our churches are open and welcoming and events are for everyone. You work very hard not to be exclusive and to invite all to join in. You will help in any church for any event and try so hard to keep your church watertight and maintained. We are indebted to our Rural Dean and friends in the Bolingbroke Deanery for their help. I began by stating all the A.G.M’s are complete and I am very proud of how you all put yourselves out to ensure that this is so. Thus enabling us to enter Lent, not with agendas and such on our minds, but God. I do hope you will join in Lent study, it is always a fulfilling and prayer filled time, preparing us for Holy week and Easter. Why not ask someone to join you?

All details and times of Lent, Holy week and Easter services are to be found in the following pages. I am always full of questions in Lent; How do I do more to eradicate the terrifying and the terrible? How do I stop crucifying my Lord? How do I make myself heard above the powers of the world? Lent begins at home, Lent begins with me, it is personal and it is essential. Jesus Christ said; “Trust in God, trust also in me.” Six short words but to believe them and to try to live by his advice takes more than our coincidental interest. He knows we fail, he knows we stumble, he knows we sometimes find it impossible. But I believe he says to each and every one of us, THANK YOU.

Prayer for our Lenten Journey For each step. For each step that we might take, Be our guide, O Lord of life For each load that we might bear, Be our strength, O Lord of life For each mountain we might face, Be our power, O Lord of life For each river that might impede, Be our safety, O Lord of life For each place where we might rest, Be our peace, O Lord of life For each sunrise and sunset, Be our joy, O Lord of life

Friday January 30th. Funeral Service For George Peter Robinson St. Mary, Tetford. A lovely poem was chosen for Peter’s service called; Ploughing, written by Jesse Baggaley. Very appropriate for our rural communities, one verse says; I think each furrow means a year: when eighty’s done I’ll not be here. And I’ll be bound before I came, my father’s father thought the same.

Our Ladies Lunch at Kenwick Park Hotel originally scheduled for 28th April has been rescheduled to take place on Tuesday 23rd June. A reminder ladies will be able to peruse a selection of local craft & gifts stalls, enjoy a delicious 2 course lunch and then sit back and listen to our wonderful guest speaker; Paul Whittaker OBE talks about his life as a deaf musician, the work of “Music and the Deaf” along with some piano music, signed song and audience participation! Tickets in advance only £22.50

We are delighted to bring our popular `Paws 4 A Cause’ dog walk to the area. Don’t worry if you haven’t got your own pooch to be sponsored for the event, why not borrow one, bring along cuddly one or better still dress up as one! We would love all the family to join us on Sunday 10th May for a beautiful Sunday morning stroll along `The Spa Trail’; flat surfaced path and bridleway along the mid-section of the old Horncastle to Woodhall Junction railway line and part of the Horncastle canal. This easy, traffic free route is ideal for all; wheelchair users and families with young children and pushchairs. The trail part of the Viking Way, passes through woods and rolling countryside. Sculptures made from wood, stone and metal are scattered along the way reflecting wildlife and links with the past. You may choose either a 3 or 6 mile return walk starting at Horncastle Swimming Pool, Coronation Walk, LN9 6HP. Walkies begin 10.30am! There is a small picnic area at the 3 mile point so bring along a snack and a drink and take a rest before the return walk. For those who do not wish to walk further you may choose to be collected from this point. Registration £5 per owner. All dogs taking part will receive a doggy bag filled with treats! Get your owner to call Caroline on 07435 970309 or email [email protected] for a registration form and further details
