Dear Parishioners and Friends of St Denis, January 25th each year (this coming Saturday) we celebrate as the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul. Did you know that the story of Saul’s encounter with our Risen Lord on the road to Damascus (which marked his conversion) is recounted not once, not twice, but three times in the Acts of the Apostles? In recent decades, the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul marks the end of the “Week of Prayer for Christian Unity,” (Jan 1825) which has always seemed very appropriate to me, because if we are ever to achieve the healing of the sad divisions in the Body of Christ, either with the Orthodox churches, or with our brothers and sisters in Christ in communities stemming from the Protestant Reformation, it will require deep and sincere conversion on the part of each member of the Body of Christ, a true turning back to Jesus with all our hearts. St John Paul II, who wrote his beautiful encyclical letter on Christian unity, Ut Unum Sint (“That they may be one”) also composed this prayer, addressed to Our Lady, for the unity of all Christians: Spouse of the Holy Spirit and Seat of Wisdom, help us in the great endeavor that we are carrying out to meet on a more and more mature way our brothers and sisters in the faith, with whom so many things unite us, although there is still something dividing us. Through all the means of knowledge, of mutual respect, of love, shared collaboration in various fields, may we be able to rediscover gradually the divine plan for the unity in which we should enter.
