Internationally, we march to- wards achieving canonical status as an Association of the Faithful, which several of our Grand Priories have already attained na- tionally. We must continue to work hard to grow our order. We must also do more to spread our message of hope, by helping those who are lost or in need. Yes, our work is fun and we are energized by our mission of mercy! So let’s give thanks for our growth in spirit, in numbers, and in our contributions to making a better world. Let’s also rejoice that our Grand Mas- ter H. E. Jan Count Dobrzenský z Dobrzenicz was admitted to the Pontifical Equestrian Order of St Gregory the Great in the rank of Knight Commander on 10 December 2016 (See Page 2 story: “St. Lazarus Grand Master, Knighted by the Pope). religions Article Chinese Catholic Nuns and the Organization of Religious Life in Contemporary China Michel Chambon Anthropology Department, Hanover College, Hanover, IN 47243, USA; [email protected] Received: 25 June 2019; Accepted: 19 July 2019; Published: 23 July 2019 Abstract: This article explores the evolution of female religious life within the Catholic Church in China today. Through ethnographic observation, it establishes a spectrum of practices between two main traditions, namely the antique beatas and the modern missionary congregations. The article argues that Chinese nuns create forms of religious life that are quite distinct from more universal Catholic standards: their congregations are always diocesan and involved in multiple forms of apostolate. Despite the little attention they receive, Chinese nuns demonstrate how Chinese Catholics are creative in their appropriation of Christian traditions and their response to social and economic changes. Keywords: christianity in China; catholicism; religious life; gender studies Surveys from 2015 suggest that in the People’s Republic of China, there are 3170 Catholic religious women who belong to 87 registered religious congregations, while 1400 women belong to 37 unregistered ones.1 Thus, there are approximately 4570 Catholics nuns in China, for a general Catholic population that fluctuates between eight to ten million. However, little is known about these women and their forms of religious life, the challenges of their lifestyle, and their current difficulties. Who are those women? How does their religious life manifest and evolve within a rapidly changing Chinese society? What do they tell us about the Catholic Church in China? This paper explores the various forms of religious life in Catholic China to understand how Chinese women appropriate and translate Catholic religious ideals. -

St. Aloysius Religious Education 5th grade “VOCATIONS – the game” Catechist Answers The game is played similar to Concentration. VOCATIONS is a card game where all of the cards are shuffled and are laid face down on a surface in orderly rows and columns, like so: All of the cards have a mate. Each turn, two cards are flipped over. If the cards do not match, they are both turned back face down. If the cards match, they are left face up and the person who made the match receives a point. With a VOCATIONS deck of cards there are 2 types of winning play: 1. the pair is considered the card with the picture and name of the religious order and the mission and founding of the religious order. 2. the pair is considered the card with the picture and name of the religious order and the picture and name of the religious order. 1, 2, 3 or 4 people can play VOCATIONS. More than 4 people can be divided into teams. Sisters of Life www.sistersoflife.org The Sisters of Life were an order first conceived of by Cardinal John Joseph O'Connor of New York, on a visit to the remains of a Nazi concentration camp at Dachau, Germany. Several years later, he decided to begin a new religious community in the Church, dedicated to the promotion of pro-life causes, specifically working for an end to abortion and euthanasia. He proclaimed his intentions in an newspaper article entitled “Help Wanted: Sisters of Life” in which he asked for women to consider joining. -

of About the Order The Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem is an international Christian chivalric Order. It is non-political, ecumenical and non-denominational, its membership is by invitation and is open to men and women who are practising members of the Christian faith in good standing within their particular denomination. Its international membership consists of Roman Catholic, Anglican, Protestant, Orthodox and other Christian denominations. Its members are committed to seeking to live their lives with charity in a manner that embodies the Christian spirit. The Order is dedicated to the care and assistance of the poor and the defence of the Christian faith and the principles of Christian chivalry. The Order has been in continual existence since the year 1098 and was established in Australia in 1979. The Grand Priory of Australia comprises seven Commanderies centred on the various capital cities. Membership is confined to a Commandery. Commandery activities include meetings, special religious services and fundraising events. Once a year a National Chapter- effectively a general meeting of the Grand Priory – is held in a capital city over four days and to which all members are invited. A highlight of the National Chapter weekend is the Investiture of new members and the advancement in rank or award of others. Benefits of Membership According to our Christian beliefs, charity is held to be the ultimate expression of the human spirit, bringing us closer to the true essence of God. The activities of the Order attempt to bring its members towards this state of grace through application of charitable giving and hands-on charitable activities. -

I spoke it out loud without shame because In such an encounter, Speaking our name, When I want to renounce it for Him, Is like speaking the name of God.1 Most female monastic rules include a description of a ceremony for taking the veil: "Receiving the Habit," "Offering the Habit," "Ceremony for Veiling and Profession" – the variety of descriptions emphasizes the solemnity of a celebration in which postulants enter into a new estate. This essay analyzes both the symbolic and material aspects of this moment in which identity is transformed. Taking the veil is a rite of passage whose every aspect, including both gesture and speech, has been carefully formalized. This essay focuses first on the ceremony's script, in which clothing draws together the postulant, her family and friends, and the monastic community that welcomes her. Carthusian Legislation in the Sixteenth Century ∗ as reflected in the Chartae John Clark The sixteenth century witnessed a radical transformation in the fortunes of the Carthusian Order. In 1509, before the upheavals of the Refor- mation, the Tertia Compilatio of the Statutes was published in an atmos- phere of stability and continuing expansion of the Order, followed by the printing next year of the splendid Amorbach (Basle) edition of the whole corpus of Carthusian Statutes, together with the Papal privileges and bulls pertaining to the Order. 1 Within thirty years the English Province was in ruins, while the effects of the Reformation had made deep inroads into the Order in Germany and elsewhere. The Counter-Reformation would renew and strengthen the Catholic Church as a walled citadel, and it would be against this background that the Nova Collectio Statutorum would be published in 1582. 2 The chartae of the General Chapter provide an illuminating background and supplement to these two corpora of legis- lation. Chartae early in the century include a renewal of the prohibition al- ready made in 1498, against monks sharing with women the labour of harvesting, and a strong prohibition against the practice of alchemy in charterhouses, renewing an ordinance of 1499. 3 The charta for 1506 includes a Papal letter revoking previous Papal permissions for women to visit certain charterhouses in particular circumstances, and, in response to the request of the Prior General and the General Chapter, forbidding ab- * Originally published in: F.
