Happy Tu B’Shevat! Actually, February 10th is Tu B’Shevat. It is the 15th day of the month of Shevat and it is the day we celebrate the birthday of trees.

You may be wondering what is the best way to celebrate trees? One thing to do is to eat fruits that grow from trees, especially fruits grown in Israel, such as figs, dates and olives (all part of a healthy plant-based diet). An- other way to celebrate Tu B’Shevat is to contact JNF and donate money to have trees planted in Israel. And allow me to suggest one more way-- albeit a bit surprising way to celebrate trees--to cherish one another.

To think of the ancient rabbis caring for trees helps each of us to nurture the seeds of justice within us. Interestingly, the tree, in Jewish ethical law, has many of the same rights shared by animals and humans. It is a living thing. It has the right to exist. It plays a valuable role in society. And, it can only be killed if it is justified.

In one of the most progressive passages in all of ancient scripture, we learn in Deuteronomy 20 that the tree is even more important than the wars waged by people. “When in your war against a city you have to besiege it, you must not destroy its trees, wielding an ax against them. You may eat of them, but you must not cut them down.” Then the Torah asks one of the most significant rhetorical questions: “Are trees of the field like humans, able to withdraw before you?”

To me, this is brilliant. In this context, trees are not only anthropomorphized, they are also pictured as in- nocent bystanders. The ancient rabbis used an expression to help us learn from verses like this, ‘Kal v’cho- mer, how much more so it is for us than it is for trees?’ In other words, our task is to internalize this and understand if we are to take such care not to harm these trees, how much more so should care be devoted to not harming, or better yet, to helping, actual other humans.

May we all nurture the seeds of tolerance, love and mercy within our own souls and of all living things.

Friday, February 14th Shabbat Services, 7:30 pm a message from Cantor Deborah Jacobson

Dear Friends,

I so look forward to seeing many of you on Friday February 7th as we celebrate a special moment in our history, Shabbat Shira, the Sabbath of Song. This Shab- bat has a special title because it is the time when our Torah portion tells how we crossed the sea to freedom singing the oldest Song (Shir) in our history; this song is referred to as ‘Shirat HaYam’, the song of the sea.

The infamous song is one of only two sections in the Torah with a different layout and has many well known verses, including our Mi Chamocha prayer- “Who is like you, Adonai, majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working won- ders?”

We will join many synagogues around the world in highlighting this Shabbat with wonderful music, musicians, our choir, and our youth. Please join us at this festive service, which will be preceded by a buffet dinner (call the office by Feb 5th to RSVP), where we’ll sing a few songs together, and enjoy a festive dessert Oneg following.

February Newsletter Our J-Tech students have continued to learn about the cities in Israel, using STEM experiments to enhance our learning. This past month, ● We learned about Har (Mt.) Hermon, along the border with Syria. We learned that it sometimes SNOWS in Israel and made snow. ● We played a true/false game to learn about the Israeli Defense Force. Then, we used code-breaking skills, like they use in the IDF, to decode messages about Israel. ● We watched a video about Masada and saw a drawing of what Herod’s Northern Palace must have looked like when it was built. Then, we tried to build replicas of the palace using blocks and legos.

We also spent time with our Rabbi and Cantor. Rabbi Chizner taught us about the tallit and gave those of us who were interested an opportunity to say the blessing and put on a tallit. Cantor Jacobson taught us some beautiful new songs that we will have the opportunity to sing at Shabbat Shirah on February 7.

Touro Synagogue is the oldest existing synagogue build- ing in the United States. Dedicated in 1763, it was built principally by Sephardic Jews who fled Spain and Portugal to find religious freedom in the colony of Rhode Island.

The synagogue building incorporates several features never seen before in Rhode Island. It is a two-story brick building with a flat-hipped roof, ornamented with cornic- es, rounded windows and an arched entrance porch with columns. The synagogue was built so that the Ark faces east. The interior features a main gallery, supported by PHOTO COURTESY OF GOPROVIDENCE.COM twelve Ionic columns representing the twelve tribes of Israel.

In 1946, was designated a National Historic Site.

A three-panel exhibit in Temple Judea’s library, gives evidence of this historic structure and its place in American Jewish history.

“More than Jews have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jews” - Ahad Ha’am

On Friday, February 28, 2020, Temple Judea, with hundreds of other congregations across the United States and Canada, will celebrate the 24th annual Shabbat Across America. TJ’s celebration begins with a catered meal which might well have come directly from the home of Isaac Rodriguez Monsanto, a/k/a Montano, the first Jewish settler in .

Monsanto and six members of his family arrived in New Orleans sometime in 1758. Prior to that time, Jews (as well as other non-Catholics) were excluded from settling in the French colony due to the Code Noir. As a Dutch-born merchant, Monsanto and his brothers were merchants throughout the region as well as traders across the Atlantic.

The Jewish community of New Orleans remained small until the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Before then, the majority of settlers came from the Alsace region of France, attracted to New Orleans where most of the residents spoke French and followed the Napoleonic Code. In 1803, a Jewish merchant, Judah Touro, arrived from Newport, Rhode Island. Touro, the son of Isaac Touro, the cantor of the Newport Jewish community (Touro Synagogue!) acquired great wealth as a merchant and was a major benefactor of many New Orleans Jewish institutions, including synagogues, Jewish societies and a Jewish hospital. The first two Jewish congregations in New Orleans were Reform.

New Orleans was also the home of Judah P. Benjamin, the first Jewish United States Senator (1852).

TJ’s Shabbat Across America dinner, beginning at 6 P.M., will be catered by Mara’s Southern Kitchen, owned by Temple members Mara and David Levi. The classic New Orleans buffet will include Jambalaya (kosher style!), spaghetti-brisket, red beans and rice, salad, and New Orleans style cole slaw.
