Overlooking the lower part of the Tyrrhenian Sea, at 38° 26’ 36‘’ of North latitude and 15° 53‘ 50‘’ of East longitude, it is in a barycentric position with respect to the corridors of intercontinental routes that ply the Mediterranean basin and in the middle position along the axis of Suez - Gibraltar. The port infrastructure, classified as 2nd Categor – 1st class – is of international importance and it is endowed with infrastructure and means to accommodate trans-oceanic vessels in transit in the Mediterranean Sea and capable of dealing with any commercial category. The port district, which depends upon the municipalities of Gioia Tauro and San Ferdinando, has an area of 440 hectares, excluding water spaces. The port has a channel configuration, with an area of 180 hectares of water surface located parallel to the coast; it consists of the southern expansion basin, the northern evolution basin, the services dock and the channel. The main operational area is made up of the Container Terminal in the care of MedCenter Container Terminal S.p.A. which has yards (about 1.600 square meters) along the east side of the channel and receives about 3.400 meters of quays for the storage and handling of containers and the annexed workings. The terminal is equipped with twenty-two quay cranes, three of which are of the type post-panamax and nineteen of the type super post-panamax (nine of these are capable of operating up to twenty-two rows of containers). It has also a quay mobile crane and appropriate number of Straddle Carriers and yard equipment. The service areas adjacent to the northern evolution basin host a car terminal with an area of 270.000 square me- ters together with an additional adjacent area of about 40.000 square meters used as a technical centre equipped for the provision of services with high added value. The presence of two sites for the construction of pleasure crafts and small ship repairs marks the western part of an area where there are also three mooring docks for Ro-Ro units. Within the port area there is the headquarters of the Corporation of Pilots of the Strait of Messina which is appoin- ted by the pilotage service; the Group of Mooring-men of Reggio Calabria oversees the operations of mooring; for the tug service are used the most modern tug boats. photo Cosimo Calabrese Port of Gioia Tauro hub of the Mediterranean Sea A - A3 Highway Salerno - Reggio Calabria B - S.S. 106 Route C - S.S. 18 Route D - S.S. 682 Route E - S.S. 280 Route L F F - S.S. 534 Route G - Airport of Reggio Calabria C H - Airport of Lamezia Terme A photo Port Authority Gioia Tauro I - Airport of Crotone I L - Italian Rail Network H E B Gioia Tauro D THE PORT can be reached, from the North or South, taking the Route S.S. 18 G connected to the highway junction of Gio- MedCenter Terminal Container ia Tauro and Rosarno of the A3 highway photo Antonio Pellicanò (Salerno-Reggio Calabria). DATE: March 12, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE COLLECTIONS ART FROM THE ANCIENT WORLD IS INSTALLED BY THEME IN RENOVATED GALLERIES AT THE GETTY VILLA LOS ANGELES—The J. Paul Getty Museum’s permanent collection of Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities will be installed at the Getty Villa in galleries that are now organized by theme for easier accessibility. These groupings of objects will shed light on different aspects of life in the ancient world: from sports to religion, family, war, theater, and more. This approach enables visitors to easily view the artworks in the context of their use in classical societies, encouraging a deeper understanding of the period. Over 1,200 objects will be on view, out of approximately 44,000 in the Getty’s antiquities collection. The works will be presented in 23 galleries, with an additional six galleries devoted to changing and loan exhibitions that will allow for the presentation of focused shows, often featuring materials on loan from other institutions. These exhibitions may also incorporate works from the special collections of the Research Library at the Getty Research Institute (GRI) and reflect the scholarly activities of the Museum, the GRI, and the Getty Conservation Institute. Other highlights of the Museum include the Family Forum, a hands-on space for families filled with fun activities that encourage shared learning and discovery; and -more- Page 2 the TimeScape Room, a permanent installation that explores time, place, and artistic style in the ancient Mediterranean through interactive exhibits. • Urban Form, Public Life and Social Capital - a Case Study of How the Concepts Are Related in Calabria, Italy
EXAMENSARBETE INOM SAMHÄLLSBYGGNAD, AVANCERAD NIVÅ, 30 HP STOCKHOLM, SVERIGE 2019 Urban form, public life and social capital - a case study of how the concepts are related in Calabria, Italy SOFIA HULDT KTH SKOLAN FÖR ARKITEKTUR OCH SAMHÄLLSBYGGNAD Abstract The aim of this thesis is to investigate the urban structure of two Italian towns based upon physical structure and social function. The towns are Bova and Bova Marina in the ancient Greek part of Calabria, Area Grecanica. This is done by answering the research questions about how the urban structures are and what preconditions there are for public life and in extension social capital. This is also compared to the discourse in research about Calabria as a region lacking behind as well as the Greek cultural heritage. The thesis was conducted during one semester spent in the area and based upon qualitative research in form of observations of the towns, mapping, textual analysis and interviews. The results showed that the urban form of the two towns differ from each other because of their history and their localisation. Bova is an ancient town in the mountains that is separated through topography, and therefore conserved with many old structures but few inhabitants, suffering from out-migration. Bova Marina is placed on the coast of the Ionic Sea, south of Bova and connected to the region by train and roads, while Bova is mainly connected to Bova Marina. Bova Marina was founded as a town in late 19th century and expanded a lot because of the railroad. It is a town with inconsistent walking network, a lot of traffic and houses in bad condition.

  • The Crotone Megalandslide, Southern Italy: Architecture, Timing And
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The Crotone Megalandslide, southern Italy: Architecture, timing and tectonic control Received: 2 March 2018 Massimo Zecchin1, Flavio Accaino1, Silvia Ceramicola1, Dario Civile1, Salvatore Critelli2, Accepted: 1 May 2018 Cristina Da Lio3, Giacomo Mangano1, Giacomo Prosser4, Pietro Teatini3,5 & Luigi Tosi3 Published: xx xx xxxx Large-scale submarine gravitational land movements involving even more than 1,000 m thick sedimentary successions are known as megalandslides. We prove the existence of large-scale gravitational phenomena of the Crotone Basin, a forearc basin located on the Ionian side of Calabria (southern Italy), by seismic, morpho-bathymetric and well data. Our study reveals that the Crotone Megalandslide started moving between Late Zanclean and Early Piacenzian and was triggered by a contractional tectonic event leading to the basin inversion. Seaward gliding of the megalandslide continued until roughly Late Gelasian, and then resumed since Middle Pleistocene with a modest rate. Interestingly, the onshore part of the basin does not show a gravity-driven deformation comparable to that observed in the marine area, and this peculiar evidence allows some speculations on the origin of the megalandslide. Kilometer- to tens of km-scale submarine gravitational collapses, here referred to as megalandslides, consist of land movements involving up to 1 km (or even more) thick sedimentary successions sliding on a basal surface that may classify as ‘basal overpressured shale detachment’ or ‘salt detachment’1. Gravity gliding may be instanta- neous, associated with mass wasting and shallow detachment, or slow, in connection with a deep detachment and long-term geological processes such as high sedimentation rates or uplif in adjacent areas1.

Urban and Maritime Transport XXVII 43 STRUCTURAL FACTORS FOR A THIRD-GENERATION PORT: PLANNING INTERVENTIONS FOR AGRI-FOOD LOGISTICS IN GIOIA TAURO, ITALY GIUSEPPE MUSOLINO1 & MARIA ROSARIA TRECOZZI2 1Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell’Informazione, delle Infrastrutture e dell’Energia Sostenibile, Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria, Italy 2Dipartimento Infrastrutture, Lavori Pubblici, Mobilità, Italy ABSTRACT Ports play a decisive role in the economic system of countries, but also in the economy of the territory where they are located, acting as gates for the exchange of people and goods. Gioia Tauro is one of the main commercial ports in Italy, located in Calabria, Today, it is specialized in container transhipment operations and it has a great expansion capacity to become a third-generation port. In Calabria, there is a demand for logistics relating to different sectors present in the regional economy; however, this demand remains unsatisfied due to the presence of different problems. The agri-food sector, in particular, is one of the most important in Calabria and it is a distinctive element of regional productions. The main problems hindering the expansion of agri-food sector are: low innovation, small and poorly structured companies, limited availability of specific transport and logistics infrastructures. The completion of Gioia Tauro as third-generation port could allow to solving these problems and boost the regional agri-food sector, also in the context of improving the other economic sectors. This paper proposes an agri-food logistics scenario for Gioia Tauro as third-generation port, according to the Regional Transport Plan of Calabria and to the strategic report of the Integrated Logistics Area.

  • Is the Gulf of Taranto an Historic Bay?*
Ronzitti: Gulf of Taranto IS THE GULF OF TARANTO AN HISTORIC BAY?* Natalino Ronzitti** I. INTRODUCTION Italy's shores bordering the Ionian Sea, particularly the seg ment joining Cape Spartivento to Cape Santa Maria di Leuca, form a coastline which is deeply indented and cut into. The Gulf of Taranto is the major indentation along the Ionian coast. The line joining the two points of the entrance of the Gulf (Alice Point Cape Santa Maria di Leuca) is approximately sixty nautical miles in length. At its mid-point, the line joining Alice Point to Cape Santa Maria di Leuca is approximately sixty-three nautical miles from the innermost low-water line of the Gulf of Taranto coast. The Gulf of Taranto is a juridical bay because it meets the semi circular test set up by Article 7(2) of the 1958 Geneva Convention on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone. 1 Indeed, the waters embodied by the Gulf cover an area larger than that of the semi circle whose diameter is the line Alice Point-Cape Santa Maria di Leuca (the line joining the mouth of the Gulf). On April 26, 1977, Italy enacted a Decree causing straight baselines to be drawn along the coastline of the Italian Peninsula.2 A straight baseline, about sixty nautical miles long, was drawn along the entrance of the Gulf of Taranto between Cape Santa Maria di Leuca and Alice Point. The 1977 Decree justified the drawing of such a line by proclaiming the Gulf of Taranto an historic bay.3 The Decree, however, did not specify the grounds upon which the Gulf of Taranto was declared an historic bay.
