Sol Gabetta Cellist and Artistic Director of the Festival Solsberg Christoph Müller & Stefan Pavlik artistic management GmbH Byfangweg 22 CH 4051 Basel T: +41 61 273 70 10 F: +41 61 273 70 20 [email protected] www.artisticmanagement.eu Sol Gabetta Cellist and artistic director of the festival Solsberg „Her tone is fascinating, full of energy and drive. Nothing about her play is fortituous, and she doesn‘t want it to be. Thus she creates ecstatic moments. Her phrases are full of po- etry, strength and clarity, brought about by a sound ideal that seeks not only beauty, but also life.“ Frankfurter Rundschau, October 2008. Wherever the Argentine-French cellist of Russian origin Sol Gabetta plays, she impresses with her captivating interpretations, her passionate, full-bodied play and her charismatic, conquering personality. Her great versatility regarding styles and repertoire distinguishes her artistic profile. She can grip audiences through her musical speech with an excellent 2nd cello concert by Shostakovich from 1969, as well as with Vivaldi’s cello concerts from the early 18th century, played on a baroque cello. Her performances can be enjoyed in concerts with great symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras or baroque ensembles as well as in her own recitals with renowned pianists and chamber musicians. She completes her traditional solo repertoire, composed by pieces by Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Elgar and Haydn, with pieces from the 20th century such as Bohuslav Marti- nu’s or Samuel Barber’s cello concerts; new pieces she learned and introduced to her re- pertoire in 2009 and 2010. Sol Gabetta is often sollicited to work with composers who write pieces for her, or whose pieces she learns and plays. She collaborates closely with the Lat- vian composer Peteris Vasks, whose piece “the Book” she plays regularly. Sol Gabetta has acquired an impressive following and a solid fan base in cities within the German cultural influence, such as Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna and Zurich. Indeed, her fans often fill great concert venues such as the Munich Philharmonic, the Zurich Tonhal- le, the Vienna Musikverein or the Leiszhalle in Hamburg. Her public is now growing in bor- dering countries such as Spain, Italy, France, the Benelux countries and Great Britain. This season, for the first time, she toured the USA and South America, and in the near future she expects to tour Japan and Australia. Her international career was launched in 2004 when she received the prestigious “Crédit Suisse Young Artist-Award”, one of the most celebrated rewards for young musicians. The winners’ concert in the fall of 2004 with the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Va- lery Gergiev opened several doors in the music world to her. Her first CD with Sony Music, with pieces by Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saëns and Ginastera was awarded an ECHO award in the fall of 2007, which she received before the eyes of millions of Germans through the channel ZDF. She received another ECHO for her live recording of Shostakovich’s 2nd concert with the Munich Philharmonic in the fall of 2009. She recorded other works with Sony Music, including Vivaldi’s cello concerts with the Sonatorio della Gioioso Marca (2007) for baroque cello, and classical cello concerts by Haydn, Leopold Müller & Pavlik artistic management GmbH Hofmann and a flute arrangement of a concert by Mozart. Several of her recordings reached high positions in the German classical music charts, including the 1st position in September and October 2009. Sol Gabetta had already been granted prices in past years, like the ARD competition in Mu- nich and the Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow. Several renowned orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Russian National Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Munich Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra or the St. Petersburg Symphonic Orchestra appreciated working with her, as well as directors like Leonard Slatkin, Andris Nelsson, Neeme Järvi, Mikhail Pletnev, Christoph Eschenbach, Charles Dutoit, Paul McCreesh and Valery Gergiev. Besides her increasing participation in concerts throughout Europe and Ja- pan, in 2009 she debuted in the USA and England, with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic of London, both under the direction of Charles Dutoit. She also collabo- rates closely with the Basel Chamber Orchestra. In June 2008, Sol played with the famous cellist Yo Yo Ma in the USA under the direction of Leonard Slatkin, playing his double con- cert for 2 cellos as well as the second cello concert by Shostakovich. In February 2006, she finished her soloist studies with professor David Geringas at the Hanns Eisler Musikhochschule in Berlin, after studying for 10 years with cellist Ivan Monig- hetti in Madrid, and then in Basel. Since 2005, she is an assistant-professor at the Musik- hochschule in Basel. She is also passionate about other projects which were born to her initiative: since June 2006, she hosts the Solsberg Festival in Switzerland, her chosen home, celebrating 8 to 10 chamber music concerts played by musicians invited by her. Another of her projects is the “Capella Gabetta”, a baroque orchestra which will start a tour with the cellist in December for the first time, playing music from Vivaldi and his contemporaries, and which will be led by Sol Gabetta’s brother, violinist Andrés Gabetta. Thanks to a generous grant by the Rahn Culture Fund, Sol Gabetta plays on one of the rare and costly violoncellos by G.B Guadagini, from 1759. 2014/15 season (Management for selected recitals and chamber music projects) Müller & Pavlik Artistic Management GmbH .

• RICCARDO MUTI New World Records 80370 CHARLES DUTOIT the PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA VINCENT PERSICHETTI
RICCARDO MUTI New World Records 80370 CHARLES DUTOIT THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA VINCENT PERSICHETTI Symphony for Strings Piano Concerto ROBERT TAUB, piano During the last four decades of his life, the name of Vincent Persichetti came to signify musicianship of a comprehensiveness virtually unmatched among American composers. Today his influence continues, reaching young pianists nurtured on his Sonatinas and Little Piano Book, school musicians who first experience serious contemporary music through his works for band, church choirs who turn to his Hymns and Responses for the Church Year as an inexhaustible resource, young composers who find his classic textbook Twentieth Century Harmony an indispensable tool, and soloists and conductors for whom his sonatas, concertos, and symphonies stand among the masterworks of American music. Throughout his life Persichetti encouraged healthy, creative participation in music at all levels of sophistication, while shunning dogmas that advocate one compositional approach at the expense of others. Persichetti was born in Philadelphia in 1915, and remained a lifelong resident of that city. At the age of five, he learned to play the piano, organ, and double bass at the Combs Conservatory. He also studied theory and composition under Russell King Miller, who became his most influential teacher. Immershing himself in music while in his teens, Persichetti memorized the scores to be performed weekly by the Philadelphia Orchestra and then attended the concerts to compare his mental realizations with the actual sounds. Composition was an integral part of his study from the start, as was exposure to other arts. Persichetti attended art school during his adolescence, and sculpture continued to be an important creative outlet for him until his death in 1987.

  • Download Augustin Dumay Biography
Augustin Dumay International critics have compared Augustin Dumay to the great violinists of the 20th century, describing him as a “great classical stylist”, a reputation underscored by his outstanding recordings for Deutsche Grammophon: Beethoven’s complete sonatas with Maria João Pires, a set that “surely ranks with Grumiaux/Haskil, Menuhin/Kempff, or Perlman/Ashkenazy” (International Piano), Brahms’ trios in which “the Milstein legacy in Dumay’s playing is wonderfully apparent” (Gramophone), and Mozart’s concertos with the Camerata Salzburg, “without exaggeration one of the finest Mozart violin concerto discs ever made” (Classic CD), in which he “confirms that he is an exceptional interpreter of Mozart as were Stern or Grumiaux before him” (Classica). Born into a family of musicians – his mother is a cellist and pianist, his father an amateur violinist – Augustin Dumay started violin lessons at the age of 5, after attending a concert by Nathan Milstein. Aged ten, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, winning the premier prix at the age of thirteen. His first concert at the Théâtre des Champs- Élysée followed a year later and he then appeared at the Montreux Festival, playing for Joseph Szigeti and Henryk Szeryng, who invited him to replace him on a tour of South America. On his return, Augustin Dumay worked in Paris with Nathan Milstein, who said of him: “I believe he will take his place amongt the great violinists of the year 2000”. He then went on to work in Brussels with Arthur Grumiaux for five years. He soon became familiar to concert audiences in France, but his international career took off thanks to his encounter with Herbert von Karajan.

  • A CONCERT with COMMENTARY, JEFFREY SIEGEL to PRESENT MOZART and HAYDN “The Leonard Bernstein of the Piano” Returns for His Ninth Season
Contact: Dave Webb Phone: 530-400-1253 E-mail: [email protected] Web: harriscenter.net/about/press-room A CONCERT WITH COMMENTARY, JEFFREY SIEGEL TO PRESENT MOZART AND HAYDN “The Leonard Bernstein of the piano” returns for his ninth season (August 2, 2019, Folsom, CA) Hailed as “an artist who means every note he plays” (New York Times), internationally acclaimed pianist Jeffrey Siegel brings power and passion to his celebrated Keyboard Conversations — returning to Folsom for his ninth season. He has been called “the Leonard Bernstein of the piano” (Chicago Tribune); "Jeffrey Siegel has everything: massive technique, musical sensitivity and character, wide tonal resources, immense reserves of power, and the ability to communicate" (Los Angeles Times). In presenting these “concerts with lively commentary” Mr. Siegel offers comments on the work, the composer, even the times in which the work was composed and then gives a virtuosic performance of a piano masterpiece. A lively Q&A concludes the concert. His presentations enrich the listening experience for the avid music lover as well as provide an inviting, instantly accessible introduction to great music for those new to classical music. "Siegel's programs strengthen the fragile bonds of communication between composer and listener and are as welcome as they are rare." (Chicago Tribune). For his concert on Saturday, August 24, Mr. Siegel will perform MOZART AND HAYDN – HUMOR AND HEARTACHE, an evening of irresistible charm and wit – and deep anguish and sadness. Haydn’s exuberant “Gypsy Rondo” and melancholy “F Minor Variations,” Mozart’s passionate “A Minor Sonata.” The inaugural Keyboard Conversations® With Jeffrey Siegel commences on Saturday, August 24 at 7:30 pm.
