An Act of Contrition

Forgive me my sins, O Lord, forgive me my sins; the sins of my youth, the sins of my age, the sins of my soul, the sins of my body; my idle sins, my serious voluntary sins; the sins I know, the sins I do not know; the sins I have concealed for so long, and which are now hidden from my memory.

I am truly sorry for every sin, mortal and venial, for all the sins of my childhood up to the present . I know my sins have wounded Thy Tender Heart, O My Savior, let me be freed from the bonds of evil through the most bitter Passion of My Redeemer. Amen.

O My Jesus, forgive what I have been. Amen February 21, 2021 Visitation Catholic Church

MASS INTENTIONS REFLECTION

February 21, 2021 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22 The First Sunday of Lent 6:15 AM Souls in Purgatory St. Oscar Romero said, “Aspire not to have more, but to be more.” These powerful words provide the perfect 8:15 AM framework for a conversion oriented Lenten experience. +George Klein God is giving us this Lenten sign to stop being concerned about what you have and focus on who you are. This TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 23 requires that we create a desert space and listen more 6:15 AM attentively for God to reveal His presence. It is all so +Colleen Reardon wonderfully simple on the one hand and so incredibly 8:15 AM challenging on the other. The message is simple: love God, neighbor, and self. Those simple words make great sense, Intentions of Frank Guistolise but we struggle translating them into reality. Our +Joseph Guistolise attachments, compulsions, obsessions, addictions, routines, and busyness all anchor us to the “idol of the self,” keeping WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24 us mired in our compulsive need for self-aggrandizement. 6:15 AM It’s not about us!

+Tom Fahey God vowed, long ago, to nurture, sustain and protect the 8:15AM relationship He has with His people. He called us into +Sarah Kaminski being, nurtures us in being, and sustains us in being. Without the Loving Divine Presence, all life would cease. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25 Once we slow down a bit and clear away some of the 6:15 AM clutter, we can see how the journey of our life is unfolding. Souls in Purgatory We can see what brings us in and out of tune with God’s love and how we can better imitate God’s loving fidelity in 8:15AM our relationship with Him. In short, we will see our myopic ++SCJ Priests short sightedness and figure out how we can better share the Divine Fire within with others. Lent isn’t just about FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26 giving stuff up for forty days and indulging again at Easter. 6:15 AM We need to push things much farther and wrestle with the +Richard and Carmella Kapraun question of how we can be more. “Being more” means becoming more fully alive and in touch with the holiness of +Paul Daivd life and the divinity that lives in and empowers all beings 8:15 AM and things. It is realizing that the “quality” of our presence Intentions of Lino Galdo is crucial to being an effective witness and herald of God’s unconditional love. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27 The illusion we have bought into causes us to believe that 8:15AM the wrong things and systems matter. We tirelessly fight to Souls in Purgatory keep things the way they are, to return to the former ways 4:00 PM of doing things or restore some nostalgic fantasy memory +Delores Brosseau of “life in the good old days.” Lent isn’t about maintaining +Barbara McGue what we have or returning to something that is gone. It’s about becoming something new. It’s about being more SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28 focused, centered, convicted, and grounded so that we can be a person who truly loves and treasures being made in the 7:30AM image of God. The secret to Gospel living is not found in +Joseph Sweeney accumulating anything for ourselves, even merit points for 9:30AM heaven. Gospel living means learning how to live with less People of Visitation Parish so that others can live with more. The thought of +Fred Cafasso permanently giving something up makes us feel uncomfortable. Faith Matt-ers By Matt Pozen – Director of Faith Formation

The Question of Authority (Article 11)

Last week we began to explore some of the leadership structures that developed in the early Church alongside the apostles, which would carry on their authority after they passed from the scene. We looked at the leading role that James (“the brother of the Lord”) played among the council of (elders) that led the church in Jerusalem. This council of presbyters had an equal vote with the apostles at the Jerusalem Council of 49 AD (Acts 15 & Galatians 2). What kind of leadership structures developed in the churches that St. Paul founded in the Greco- Roman world? Acts 13:1 mentions that it was a group of “ and teachers” in the church of Antioch (Syria) who “laid hands” on Paul and Barnabas and commissioned them for their first missionary journey. It is unclear what the exact roles were of prophets and teachers in the early church, but a document called The Didache (circa 100 AD) mentions that traveling prophets were often asked to preside at the celebration of the eucharist. Acts 14:23 says that on their first missionary journey Paul and Barnabas “appointed presbyters in each church and commended them to the Lord.” So just like the mother church in Jerusalem, the churches founded by Paul were led initially by a council of presbyters. Besides the general oversight of the church, the makes no mention of the other roles played by the presbyters, so we don’t even know if they were the ones who presided at the weekly celebration of the eucharist.

In Acts 18 Paul arrives in the city of Corinth in southern Greece, and he immediately befriends a Jewish Christian couple: Priscilla and Aquila. They may have hosted the Corinthian church at their home, since there were no church buildings at this early stage. As the hosts of the church, what kind of leadership role did Priscilla and Aquila play? We don’t really know, but after spending 18 months in Corinth Paul brought Priscilla and Aquila with him on his next stop: the city of Ephesus on the western coast of Turkey. Paul left them there, apparently to establish and lead a fledgling Christian community while Paul continued his missionary travels. A few years later Paul returned to Ephesus and wrote his 1st letter to the Corinthians, and in 16:19 of this letter he says that Priscilla and Aquila hosted the Ephesian church at their home.

A few years later (circa 58 AD), Acts 20 tells us that as Paul was wrapping up his missionary work in Ephesus, he gave a farewell speech to the presbyters, in the nearby town of Miletus. (So apparently the church of Ephesus was being led by a council of presbyters at that point.) In the speech Paul says to them: “Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the holy Spirit has appointed you overseers” (Acts 20:28). The Greek word translated as “overseers” is episcopoi, which later on becomes the word for “”. At this early stage, apparently the council of leaders who led each church were called both presbyteroi (elders) and episcopoi (overseers). It wouldn’t be until the second century that these became separate leadership roles in the church, where each region of churches would be led by a single episcopos (), who ordained and appointed presbyteroi (elders) to lead each church in his region (diocese). And it wouldn’t be until the third century that presbyters acquired the title “priests”.

Next week we’ll explore what the letters of St. Paul in the New Testament reveal about the leadership structures in his churches. YTDYTD Sunday Sunday Collection Collection Your gift to the CMAA makes a difference
