The owner refused to accede to the request but asked him to pay to the cashier. Their conversation made me reflect on the Sacrament of Reconciliation. What my friend was asking from the owner seems to be the same question that many of the Christians are pondering. «Can I just pay what I bought directly to you?» Maybe what is in the mind of my friend is that «why can I not pay directly to you, you are the owner of this store? You can even decide to give me a discount or not let me pay at all?» But still, the owner did not ac- cept that my friend pays what he has bought directly to him. The same thing with confession, people are wondering if they «can just ask for forgiveness directly to God?» But just like the grocery owner who insisted that my friend pays to the cashier, so is God pointing to the person to whom he entrusted the authority to forgive sins – to the ordained priest. The forgiveness of grave sin is made available to us through the Sac- rament of Reconciliation. Our basic Catechism teaches us that the Church must continue Christ’s work of healing and salvation in the power of the Holy Spirit1. God never gets tired of giving grace and forgiveness to repentant sin- ners through the Sacrament He has instituted in the Church. The Church is consistent in his teaching that through the Sacrament man obtains pardon from God’s mercy and he is reconciled again with God and with the Church which they also have wounded by their sins2. What is the place of the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the Church and in the world today? First, after the Vatican Council, the name has been changed from the Sacrament of Confession or Penance to Sacrament of Reconcilia- tion. In the new Ordo Paenitentiae, the Church offers ways of celebrating the Sacrament. Additionally the term sacrament of reconciliation has been un- derstood nowadays in a wider context. Emphasis has been given to Christ as a primordial sacrament of reconciliation and to the Church as a basic sacrament of reconciliation. Even the Church gives emphasis on the different manifes- tations of reconciliation where the Sacrament of Penance maybe considered among the forms of reconciliation in the Church. Even if there are other forms of reconciliation, the Sacrament is considered the only ordinary way to forgive grave sins and other reconciliatory rites can never be alternatives. Secondly, the Church has observed that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is in crisis. This has been mentioned by John Paul II many times and this can 280 CUADERNOS DOCTORALES DE LA facultad DE TEOLOGÍA / VOL. 60 / 2013 PRESENTATION only be overcome by resolute and patient pastoral efforts.3 The decline of those who avail of the Sacrament is one of the evidences of the existing crisis, and the worst effect of the loss of the sense of sin and of the crisis of the Sacra- ment is the denial of the existence of God4.

THE CENTRALITY OF THE HOLY SACRIFICE OF THE MASS AT CHRISTENDOM COLLEGE The Church teaches that the Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life”1 and that the celebration of the Mass “is a sacred action surpassing all others. No other action of the Church can equal its efficacy.”2 That is why “as a natural expression of the Catholic identity of the University. members of this community . will be encouraged to participate in the celebration of the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, as the most perfect act of community worship.”3 Those central truths are taught and lived at Christendom College, a “Catholic coeducational college institutionally committed to the Magisterium”4 of the Church, in the following ways: The Celebration of the Sacred Liturgy The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass • Mass is offered frequently: twice daily Monday through Thursday, three times on MONDAY (Friday), twice on Saturday, and once on Sunday (the day on which we gather as one family). • Mass in the Roman Rite is celebrated in all the ways offered by the Church: in the Ordinary Form in both English and Latin, and in the Extraordinary Form from one to three times per week, as circumstances permit. • The Ordinary Form of the Mass is celebrated with the solemnity appropriate to each feast, utilizing worthy sacred vessels and vestments, and drawing upon the Church’s rich tradition of chant, polyphony, and hymnody. • The Ordinary Form of the Mass is celebrated reverently and with rubrical fidelity. • No classes or other activities are scheduled during Mass times. • The majority of the College community attends daily Mass regularly and with great devotion.

Yocum This dissertation examines the conception of sin and the practice of penance among Catholics in the United States from 1955 to 1975. It begins with a brief historical account of sin and penance in Christian history, indicating the long tradition of performing penitential acts in response to the identification of one’s self as a sinner. The dissertation then considers the Thomistic account of sin and the response of penance, which is understood both as a sacrament (which destroys the sin) and as a virtue (the acts of which constitute the matter of the sacrament but also extend to include non-sacramental acts). This serves to provide a framework for understanding the way Catholics in the United States identified sin and sought to amend for it by use of the sacrament of penance as well as non-sacramental penitential acts of the virtue of penance.

  • Synoptic Traditions in Didache
Synoptic Tradition in the Didache Revisited Dr. Aaron Milavec Center for the Study of Religion and Society University of Victoria Ever since a complete copy of the Didache was first discovered in 1873, widespread efforts have been undertaken to demonstrate that the framers of the Didache depended upon a known Gospel (usually Matthew, Luke, or both) and upon one or more Apostolic Fathers (Barnabas, Hermas, and/or Justin Martyr). In more recent times, however, most scholars have pushed back the date of composition to the late first or early second century and called into question dependency upon these sources. In the late 50s, Audet1. Glover2, and Koester3 cautiously developed this stance independent of each other. More recently, Draper4, Kloppenborg5, Milavec6, Niederwimmer7, Rordorf8, and Van de Sandt9 have argued quite persuasively in favor of this position. Opposition voices, however, are still heard. C.M. Tuckett10 of Oxford University, for example, reexamined all the evidence in 1989 and came to the conclusion that parts of the Didache "presuppose the redactional activity of both evangelists" thereby reasserting an earlier position that "the Didache here presupposes the gospels of Matthew and Luke in their finished forms."11 Clayton N. Jefford, writing in the same year independent of Tuckett, came to the conclusion that the Didache originated in the same community that produced the Gospel of Matthew and that both works had common sources but divergent purposes.12 Vicky Balabanski, in a book-length treatment of the eschatologies of Mark, Matthew, and Didache, reviewed all the evidence up until 1997 and concluded that Did. 16 was written "to clarify and specify certain aspects of Matthew's eschatology."13 This essay will weigh the evidence for and against dependence upon the Gospel of Matthew--the most frequently identified "written source" for the Didache.

  • Pope Francis to Issue Apostolic Letter on Ministry of Catechist
Pope Francis to issue apostolic letter on ministry of catechist Pope Francis will issue an apostolic letter next week on the ministry of catechist. The Holy See press office said May 5 that the papal letter, issued motu proprio (“on his own impulse”), would be presented at a press conference May 11. It described the apostolic letter, Antiquum ministerium, as the means “by which the ministry of catechist is instituted.” The Italian section of the Vatican News website said: “The motu proprio therefore will formally establish the ministry of catechist, developing that evangelizing dimension of the laity called for by Vatican II.” It noted that in a 2018 video message, Pope Francis said that the vocation of catechist “demands to be recognized as a true and genuine ministry of the Church, which we particularly need.” Further details will be unveiled at the news conference, which will take place at the Vatican. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization, and Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, the Pontifical Council’s delegate for catechesis, will speak at the event. The Code of Canon Law (Can. 785) defines catechists as “lay members of the Christian faithful, duly instructed and outstanding in Christian life, who devote themselves to setting forth the teaching of the gospel and to organizing liturgies and works of charity under the direction of a missionary.” “Catechists are to be formed in schools designated for this purpose or, where such schools are lacking, under the direction of missionaries,” it says, according to a Catholic News Agency report.

  • Official Communique 13
Official Communique 13 Presentation of the decree of the CCCB on the application of the norms of Misericordia Dei My dear fellow priests, It is five years now since I presented to you the letter Misericordia Dei of Pope John Paul II, and provided you with some guidelines for the practice of the ministry of reconciliation while reserving the right to return to the subject once the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments had confirmed the decree that the CCCB intended to put before it. Some revisions and several meetings between the representatives of the CCCB and the Holy See were necessary before the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops received from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments the recognitio requested following a vote by more than a two- thirds majority of the members of the Conference. It was actually on January 18th last that the Conference received the confirmation of its decree. You will find as an appendix the text of the decree in French and English. This decree of the Conference confirms the exceptional character of general absolution and specifies the conditions for it even more precisely. You will realize that the necessary conditions do not obtain in our diocese to enable me to authorize recourse to this third form of the sacrament of penance. In this respect, nothing has changed in what I said to you in my letter of February 9th, 2005 in which I informed you of my decision to give no further approval to the adoption of general absolution.

May 20, 2019 The Diocese of Grand Rapids’ Office of Communications shares the following reflection from Bishop Walkowiak regarding Vos estis lux mundi (“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” Mt 5:14). The new Motu Proprio released by Pope Francis orders a worldwide response by the Church to the evil of sexual abuse: “I join my brother bishops in welcoming the directives of Vos estis lux mundi as a framework for empowering the global Church in responding to and reporting abuse. Especially important are its directives for reporting and dealing with allegations of abuse against cardinals, bishops, patriarchs, and heads of religious institutes, and holding accountable anyone who covers-up or fails to adequately respond to allegations of abuse. In addition, it requires reporting to and compliance with local law enforcement, establishes whistle-blower protections for those who come forward, and protects the rights of all persons involved. The release of this Motu Proprio just two months after the meeting of episcopal conference presidents in Rome, shows the Holy Father’s expectation for swift and far-reaching action to eliminate the crime and sin of sexual abuse from the Church. It also reflects his deep pastoral concern for victim-survivors, their families and the faithful throughout the world. Many elements of the Motu Proprio are already being followed in the United States through the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People and its essential norms, established in 2002. As an expansion of that work, the Diocese of Grand Rapids and other U.S.
