The collective “1: 61, young art historians The collective “1: 61, young art historians”, created in September 2018, carries in its name the identity of its project. Its members belong as much to the Internet generation, absorbed in a continuous stream of images, as to an ancient historian tradition, which defends the primacy of the work, the need to face it and to observe it. length. This mixture between two temporalities then appears as a paradox. Faced with this contemporary reality, where photography is an obvious fact, it is important to isolate in the current creation constructed images that challenge us. So we want to offer readings of these photographs through an exhibition, the duration of which gives us the opportunity to really linger over these visual objects. We propose to apprehend the photographic image against the current: our interest is then on creations that interrogate the eye and the mind, or nothing is a priori pledge of truth. The genesis of our collective is that of a group of eight students with the same inspiration. It was formed on the benches of the University Panthéon-Sorbonne during our meeting in art history license. Brought together by our common taste for contemporary photography, it is natural that we have nourished a project that materializes today in a future exhibition.

  • Evgeni Dybsky Giotto Project
Evgeni Dybsky Giotto Project Evgeni Dybsky Giotto Project Jeanette Zwingenberger Evgeni Dybsky, Splitting time Processes of perception, remembrance, creation Dybsky’s work is like an old mirror that reflects past, present and future times. The cracks and stains testify to the shad- ing and dilation of time. Whereas the picture of Wilde’s Dorian Gray1 is a portrait that acts as the alter ego of a character, Dybsky is not concerned with depicting a subject but rather immerses us in processes of perception and remembering, in a dialogue with the work of Giotto. In the beginning was Dybsky’s 1988 voyage to Padua, where he first encountered the fresco cycle of Giotto (1266–1337) in the Cappella degli Scrovegni. During a subsequent visit in 2005 he was confronted with the restored works. The frescos had been heavily painted over, the original seemingly obliterated. Dybsky’s project addresses the questions: what remains of Giotto’s work? What was the experience of those who originally saw it? How is it received today? This loss is the starting point for Dybsky’s anachronological procedure. It takes him from the search for the original colours to a new creative process. The “Splitting time” of the title is an allusion to Gilles Deleuze’s distinction between two aspects of time. If we apply this concept to Dybsky’s work, Giotto represents the preserved series of past times within our transient series of presents2. This is a simultaneous union of present and past that corresponds to Deleuze’s concept of the “crystal image”. For Deleuze, if you follow memory on its own terms, then the images stop organizing themselves according to spatial criteria in favour of purely temporal ones.

  • Metonymy & Trauma
ii METONYMY & TRAUMA RE-PRESENTING DEATH IN THE LITERATURE OF W. G. S E B A L D Andrew Michael Watts A research dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of PhD English University of New South Wales 2006 PLEASE TYPE THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Surname or Family name: WATTS First name: ANDREW Other names: MICHAEL Abbreviation for degree as given in the University Calendar: PhD School: ENGLISH Faculty: ARTS Title: Metonymy & Trauma: Re-presenting Death in the Literature of W. G. Sebald Abstract 350 words maximim: (PLEASE TYPE) Novel: Fragments of a Former Moon The novel Fragments of a Former Moon (FFM) invokes the paradoxical earlier death of the still-living protagonist. The unmarried German woman is told that her skeletal remains have been discovered in Israel, thirty-eight years since her body was interred in 1967. This absurd premise raises issues of representing death in contemporary culture; death's destabilising effect on the individual's textual representation; post-Enlightenmentdissolution of the modern rational self; and problems of mimetic post- Holocaust representation. Using W G Sebald's fiction as a point of departure, FFM's photographic illustrations connote modes of textual representation that disrupt the autobiographical self, invoking mortality and its a-temporal (representational) displacement. As with Sebald's recurring references to the Holocaust, FFM depicts a psychologically unstable protagonist seeking to recover repressed memories of an absent past. Research dissertation: Metonymy &Trauma: Re-presenting Death in the Literature of W. G. Sebald The dissertation centres on the effect of metonymy in the rhetoric of textually-constructedidentity and its contemporary representation in the face of death.

Zigayer Entitled: Phenomenologies of Impairment: The Self-Portraits of Frida Kahlo and Chuck Close and submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (Art History) Complies with the regulations of the University and meets the accepted standards with respect to originality and quality. Signed by the final Examining Committee: _____________________________ Chair _____________________________ Examiner Dr. Johanne Sloan _____________________________ Examiner Dr. Jean Bélisle _____________________________ Supervisor Dr. Catherine Mackenzie Approved by _____________________________________ Dr. Johanne Sloan, Graduate Program Director _____________________________________ Dr. Catherine Wild, Dean of Faculty Date _____________________________________ Abstract Phenomenologies of Impairment: The Self-Portraits of Frida Kahlo and Chuck Close Allan Zigayer The decision to represent oneself as the principal subject in a work of art raises questions as to the motivations governing the act of self-portrayal. Artists’ self-portraits have often been constituted in relation to practicality or expediency, with the artist being viewed as his or her most accommodating model. But when the practice manifests in a life-long preoccupation, as it does among others with Frida Kahlo and Chuck Close, we must surmise that something more is at stake. To the extent that both artists’ early lives were appreciably affected by impairment, disease, or physical or emotional trauma, their formative experiences were anything but conventional.
