The project examines several digital composing practices as examples of what Gerard Hauser (1999) and others have dubbed ―vernacular rhetoric,‖ or common modes of communication that may resist or challenge more institutionalized forms of discourse. Using a cultural studies approach, this dissertation focuses on the popular video-sharing site, YouTube, and attempts to theorize several vernacular composing practices. First, this dissertation discusses the rhetorical trope of irreverence, with particular attention to the ways in which irreverent strategies such as new media parody transcend more traditional modes of public discourse. Second, this dissertation discusses three approaches to video remix (collection, Detournement, and mashing) as political strategies facilitated by Web 2.0 technologies, with particular attention to the ways in which these strategies challenge the construct of authorship and the power relationships inherent in that construct. This dissertation then considers the extent to which sites like YouTube remediate traditional rhetorical modes by focusing on the genre of epideictic rhetoric and the ways in which sites like YouTube encourage epideictic practice. Finally, in light of what these discussions reveal in terms of rhetorical practice and democracy in Web 2.0 arenas, this dissertation offers a concluding discussion of what our ―Web 2.0 world‖ might mean for composition studies in terms of theory, practice, and the teaching of writing. -

This year, we are pleased to include our first essay from a discipline other than English, “Patriarchy’s Roots,” written by Amy Leu for History 1110, World Civilization 1. Each year, instructors at Volunteer State nominate students who have demonstrated excellence in writing and invite them to submit an essay to our selection committee; that committee of Vol State faculty then works collaboratively to choose superior student work for publication. -

Sebald and Outsider Art by Melissa Starr Etzler Doctor of Philosophy in German and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Winfried Kudszus, Chair This study focuses on a major aspect of literature and culture in the later twentieth century: the intersection of psychiatry, madness and art. As the antipsychiatry movement became an international intervention, W. G. Sebald’s fascination with psychopathology rapidly developed. While Sebald collected many materials on Outsider Artists and has several annotated books on psychiatry in his personal library, I examine how Sebald’s thought and writings, both academic and literary, were particularly influenced by Ernst Herbeck’s poems. Herbeck, a diagnosed schizophrenic, spent decades under the care of Dr. Leo Navratil at the psychiatric institute in Maria Gugging. Sebald became familiar with Herbeck via the book, Schizophrenie und Sprache (1966), in which Navratil analyzed his patients’ creative writings in order to illustrate commonalities between pathological artistic productions and canonical German literature, thereby blurring the lines between genius and madness. In 1980, Sebald travelled to Vienna to meet Ernst Herbeck and this experience inspired him to compose two academic essays on Herbeck and the semi-fictionalized account of their encounter in his novel Vertigo (1990). -

Guy Lanoue Université de Montréal 1 Metonymy and Multiple Naming in North American Indian Societies Guy Lanoue Département d'anthropologie Université de Montréal In the Western tradition, names are everywhere iconic indicators of the autonomy of the persona, of the Self as a locus of emotional and existential resistance to the community. This has given rise to endless speculation about the manner in which proper names have signification even though most are deprived of lexical meanings (Wilson 1998:xi). Individual names therefore subvert the standard (largely Jakobsonian) theory of semantic codification (Marconi 2000) in which the relation of sign to signified is transmitted through the semantic content of the sign. To identify properly the subject of a simple sentence such as "John is at home" in order to gauge the truth of the assertion, a listener must know from the unspecified context to which "John" the speaker is referring, transforming "John" into a metonym of the category of proper names. Furthermore, for the sentence to be meaningful to the listener (which is not the same thing as its truth value, as Noam Chomsky has pointed out), the listener must invoke a second unspecified context, attaching to the name "John" visual and personality clues coded to that specific listener, i.e., the listener's memories of John. These clues in the listener's memory do not correspond to agreed-upon semantic conventions that constitute the referential pool that is determinative of the socially-'objective' knowledge beloved by Karl Popper's analytic approach and criticised (but in the end legitimated) by Wittgenstein. -

Ao todo, foram registrados 96 nomes graficamente diferentes. Esses nomes, quando possível, foram analisados do ponto de vista etimológico, com base em consultas nos dicionários onomásticos de língua portuguesa de Nascentes (1952) e de Machado (1981), além de dicionários de língua inglesa, como os de Arthur (1857) e Reaney e Willson (2006). Foram também utilizados como materiais de análise a Lista de nomes admitidos em Portugal, encontrada no site do Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado, de Portugal, e a Plataforma Nomes no Brasil, disponível no site do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística. Quanto às análises morfológicas aqui empreendidas, utilizamos como aporte teórico-metodológico a Morfologia Construcional, da maneira proposta por Booij (2010), Soledade (2013), Gonçalves (2016a), Simões Neto (2016) e Rodrigues (2016). Em linhas gerais, o artigo vislumbra observar a trajetória do formativo –son na criação de antropônimos no Brasil. ISSN 1065-9366 (print), 2168-3158 (online) Abstract Anthropological perspectives lend insight on names and on the social and literary function of names in principle and in the Book of Mormon. A discussion of the general function of names in kinship; secret names; and names, ritual, and rites of passage precedes a Latter-day Saint perspective. Names and metonymy are used symbolically. Examples include biblical and Book of Mormon metonymic naming, nomenclature, and taxonomy. Biblical laws of purity form the foun- dation for a pattern of metonymic associations with the name Lamanite, where the dichotomy of clean/ unclean is used to give name to social alienation and pollution. -

It explores, for instance, the negative evaluation of the target achieved in de-roling, where the source chosen is a target feature that is largely irrele- vant to the target’s role in a described situation, therein contrasting with other target features that would have been more appropriate. This form of contrast, amongst others, can generate irony, so that the chapter elucidates some of the complex connections between metonymy and irony. It also explores the mul- tiple roles of contrast in transferred epithets, especially as transferred epithets can be simultaneously metonymic and metaphorical. -
