It shows the unarguable but ambiguous emergence of a middle class, the successes and failures in the battle against poverty and the spectacular enrichment of a wealthy few. It asks whether the Confucian ideal of a “harmonious society,” which the authorities have been promoting since the early 2000s, is compatible with a market economy. What are friends for?: The arts of making do and working out in Beijing, China Michelle Yang Zhang Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Michelle Yang Zhang All Rights Reserved Abstract What are friends for?: The arts of making do and working out in Beijing, China Michelle Yang Zhang Through a second look at the now twenty-five-year-old literature on guanxi, a form of reciprocal relationship making and using in China, I examine how the kinds of opportunities and challenges possible for young people intersect with who they know and how this has changed (with its own set of reflections on and consequences for a still-rapidly changing China) since China’s rural to urban transition. My dissertation project examines how young people in contemporary urban China form and produce guanxi ties (resource-full relationships) through the theoretical lens of practice and possibility, inspired by de Certeau’s conceptualization of practice, productive consumption, and strategies versus tactics (1984). Drawing on qualitative data gathered through participant observation and unstructured interviews, I sought to both describe and analyze when, where, and how social networks became consequential. Central to my methodology is an emphasis on people and their practices rather than the common sense categories used to describe them. The people in my field research were predominantly aged 18- 30 and came from a range of ethnic, professional, and education backgrounds. In so doing, I was able to examine the moments and contexts within which some people have opportunities and others do not, as well as when some are vulnerable while others are less so. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 2 Abstract Abstract This thesis considers the Chinese Blueshirts organisation from 1932 to 1938 in the context of Chiang Kaishek's attempts to unify and modernise China. It sets out the terms of comparison between the Blueshirts and Fascist organisations in Europe and Japan, indicating where there were similarities and differences of ideology and practice, as well as establishing links between them. It then analyses the reasons for the appeal of Fascist organisations and methods to Chiang Kaishek. Following an examination of global factors, the emergence of the Blueshirts from an internal point of view is considered. As well as assuming many of the characteristics of a Fascist organisation, especially according to the Japanese model and to some extent to the European model, the Blueshirts were in many ways typical of the power-cliques which were already an integral part of Chinese politics. -

Rapid Growth of Chinese ICT Industry When the Chinese government began its Reform and Opening Policy in 1978, Chinese GDP per capita was less than $400. In 1980, the number of telephone subscribers per 100 inhabitants in China was only 0.63, and in 1983 the development of machinery compatible with the IBM PC had only just started. Under a market-oriented and outward-looking policy, however, China achieved amazingly rapid and continuous economic development, so that its GDP per capita reached $3,678 in 2009. China has already become one of the biggest ICT manufacturing countries in the world. In 2008, of the world’s PCs, around 40%, or 136 million units, were made in China. As the PC factory of the world, China exported 80% of these, but 20% were sold to the Chinese market, which has also become one of the biggest markets in the world, around three times the size of the Japanese PC market. Lenovo, the top Chinese PC manufacturer, merged with IBM’s PC Division in 2005 and became the world’s third largest PC manufacturer (dropping to fourth, however, after the takeover of Gateway by Acer). As of June 2010, China has 805.3 million mobile phone subscribers, or around 16% of the world’s total and around eight times as many as Japan.
