Using the Croatian edition, published in 2002, the author rewrote the entire work in English. The existing glossary from the Croatian edition was expanded, and some additions were made, such as the inclusion of the Sanskrit original in a separate translation at the end of the book, a glossary of names, Kuru family tree, and, in respect to readers demand, a brief guide to the pronunciation of Sanskrit. Because of all that, and because of the differences be- tween English and Croatian versions, the overall volume of the book increased from 562 pages (the Croatian edition) to almost seven hundred pages. The English edition also provided an op- portunity to correct a certain number of small errors in grammar, references and transliteration of Sanskrit terms. Adjusting of the text to English made us re-examine our method of writing the Sanskrit terms, as well as lexical consistency, which turned out to be quite a challenge, mostly because the differences between Sanskrit and English are greater than those between San- skrit and Croatian. We tried to make the entire work as formally correct as possible, and, although the author in his introduction concedes that this book is not meant primarily for scholars, and that the only thing of importance for him was to convey the spiritual message, you might be surprised to find out that final result is more formally correct than any other translation we vii Bhagavad-gita had the opportunity to review, and that his translation unites spiri- tual meaning with poetic harmony and literal accuracy. This seems to come as a result of close association between spirit and lan- guage in Indian culture, where one cannot survive if the other is not treated with due respect. There are very few rules and standards regarding the use of Sanskrit terms in English, which is in part caused by the technical problems of transliteration, especially in the case of authors writ- ing about spiritual subjects. In all cases, we tried to stay as close to the original as possible. We upheld this rule even in the case of words that are customary in English, such as cakra, which is usually written phonetically as chakra, where only a part of the meaning of the Sanskrit term is conveyed in English, the one re- garding the energetic centers in the body. However, Sir Monier- Williams* cites in his dictionary almost forty different meanings of this term, including circle, zodiac, whirlpool, and potters wheel. We can find an example in Krsnas weapon, the Sudarana cakra, which is on one hand a circular weapon, a disc, and on the other hand Krsnas spiritual weapon, His attribute, which is seldom recognized. In all such cases, we decided to stick to the original, and give the reader an opportunity to judge the subtle- ties of meaning himself.** According to the same logic, we used Krsna instead of Krishna, iva instead of Shiva, nirvana instead of nir- vana, and avatara instead of avatar. Still, we did not go so far as to use the Sanskrit plural, deciding that it would probably only confuse readers, and so we used the English plurals with Sanskrit stems, as in cakras and avataras (not chakras and avatars). Some of the more unusual plurals created along the way were the plurals of the words pitr (the ancestors, pro- nounced pitri), pitrs (pronounced pitris) and the plural of the word apsaras (class of female deities, nymphs)apsarasas.     The Emergence of the Mahajanapadas Sanjay Sharma Introduction In the post-Vedic period, the centre of activity shifted from the upper Ganga valley or madhyadesha to middle and lower Ganga valleys known in the contemporary Buddhist texts as majjhimadesha. Painted grey ware pottery gave way to a richer and shinier northern black polished ware which signified new trends in commercial activities and rising levels of prosperity. Imprtant features of the period between c. 600 and 321 BC include, inter-alia, rise of ‘heterodox belief systems’ resulting in an intellectual revolution, expansion of trade and commerce leading to the emergence of urban life mainly in the region of Ganga valley and evolution of vast territorial states called the mahajanapadas from the smaller ones of the later Vedic period which, as we have seen, were known as the janapadas. Increased surplus production resulted in the expansion of trading activities on one hand and an increase in the amount of taxes for the ruler on the other. The latter helped in the evolution of large territorial states and increased commercial activity facilitated the growth of cities and towns along with the evolution of money economy. The ruling and the priestly elites cornered most of the agricultural surplus produced by the vaishyas and the shudras (as labourers). The varna system became more consolidated and perpetual. It was in this background that the two great belief systems, Jainism and Buddhism, emerged. They posed serious challenge to the Brahmanical socio-religious philosophy. These belief systems had a primary aim to liberate the lower classes from the fetters of orthodox Brahmanism.

    Mahabharatha Tatparya Nirnaya Chapter XIX The episodes of Lakshagriha, Bhimasena's marriage with Hidimba, Killing Bakasura, Draupadi svayamwara, Pandavas settling down in Indraprastha are described in this chapter. The details of these episodes are well-known. Therefore the special points of religious and moral conduct highlights in Tatparya Nirnaya and its commentaries will be briefly stated here. Kanika's wrong advice to Duryodhana This chapter starts with instructions of Kanika an expert in the evil policies of politics to Duryodhana. This Kanika was also known as Kalinga. Probably he hailed from Kalinga region. He was a person if Bharadvaja gotra and an adviser to Shatrujna the king of Sauvira. He told Duryodhana that when the close relatives like brothers, parents, teachers, and friends are our enemies, we should talk sweet outwardly and plan for destroying them. Heretics, robbers, theives and poor persons should be employed to kill them by poison. Outwardly we should pretend to be religiously.Rituals, sacrifices etc should be performed. Taking people into confidence by these means we should hit our enemy when the time is ripe. In this way Kanika secretly advised Duryodhana to plan against Pandavas. Duryodhana approached his father Dhritarashtra and appealed to him to send out Pandavas to some other place. Initially Dhritarashtra said Pandavas are also my sons, they are well behaved, brave, they will add to the wealth and the reputation of our kingdom, and therefore, it is not proper to send them out. However, Duryodhana insisted that they should be sent out. He said he has mastered one hundred and thirty powerful hymns that will protect him from the enemies.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by The Trumpeter - Journal of Ecosophy (Athabasca University) Dharma in the Mahabharata as a response to Ecological Crises: A speculation By Kamesh Aiyer Abstract Without doing violence to Vyaasa, the Mahabharata (Vyaasa, The Mahabharata 1933-1966) can be properly viewed through an ecological prism, as a story of how “Dharma” came to be established as a result of a conflict over social policies in response to on-going environmental/ecological crises. In this version, the first to recognize the crises and to attempt to address them was Santanu, King of Hastinapur (a town established on the banks of the Ganges). His initial proposals evoked much opposition because draconian and oppressive, and were rescinded after his death. Subsequently, one of Santanu’s grandsons, Pandu, and his children, the Pandavas, agreed with Santanu that the crises had to be addressed and proposed more acceptable social policies and practices. Santanu’s other grandson, Dhritarashtra, and his children, the Kauravas, disagreed, believing that nothing needed to be done and opposed the proposed policies. The fight to establish these policies culminated in the extended and widespread “Great War” (the “Mahaa-Bhaarata”) that was won by the Pandavas.
