Wild Strawberry Fragaria vesca Rose Family (Rosaceae) Zones: 5-9 Full Sun to Partial Shade Low Water Location: Fragrance Garden, Floral Walk, Herb Garden, Medicinal Garden, Perennial Garden, Water Pavilion The wild woodland strawberry makes a great border groundcover for areas that might otherwise be difficult to plant. Its native range occurs throughout North America, Europe and Asian, with some temperate parts of South America, specifically Chile. It likes sunny areas but will also take some shade. Unlike most strawberries, it does not send out runners, so the size and spread of the plant is manageable. It does, however, reseed easily, so you will need to watch for small volunteer plants that emerge. It is also a good choice for your container gardens and arrangements. It prefers rich, acidic soil and is hardy to Zone 4. This low grower only reaches about 4 to 10 inches in height and 8 inches wide. White flowers emerge in the spring and give way to small fruits that are either turn red or stay white in color. Both the leaves and the berries can be harvested and each have many uses. The berries are actually considered a natural bleach and if crushed and left on the teeth for 5 minutes can brighten your smile! It is also known to lighten dark spots on the skin and ease sunburns. The berries are high in vitamin C and have antioxidant properties. When the leaves are dried they make a flavorful addition to herbal teas..

FLOWER: white, 5-parted, clusters of blossoms on a stem BLOOMING PERIOD: April to June SIZE: low plant, 8 – 10 inches tall BEHAVIOR: Spreads by above ground runners (stolons). The leaves are compound with three sharply toothed leaflets. SITE REQUIREMENTS: Tolerant of a wide variety of soil moisture conditions, moist to dry. It grows in full sun or light shade. Look for wild strawberries on woodland edges, savannas, old fields, wet or dry prairies, rocky openings, roadsides, or along railroads. NATURAL RANGE: From eastern Canada west to Albert, south to Georgia, Tennessee and Oklahoma. It is found throughout Wisconsin. SPECIAL FEATURES: This plant provides a good ground cover for problem areas. The delicious, edible fruit is quickly taken by chipmunks and birds. Indigenous peoples used the fruits for food and medicine for various stomach complaints. Leaves were also dried for use in tea to alleviate a variety of ailments. Of special note is that the cultivated strawberry was developed in France from a cross between this plant and a similar wild strawberry from Chile. SUGGESTED CARE: Water well to establish and then little care is needed. COMPANION PLANTS: There are many companion plants because of the wide variety of habitats where wild strawberry occurs. The challenge of developing niche markets for an unfamiliar fruit. The cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill.) is one of the so-called "lost crops of the Incas" (Vietmeyer in Popenoe et al., 1989) that has come to us from the Andean heights. Also called chirimoya, chirimolla, or the custard apple in English it is well-known to indigenous populations in Latin America, familiar to only a limited group of consumers outside the region and largely ignored by mainstream agricultural science. In Latin America and particularly in Ecuador, the cherimoya has the potential to become a commercial subtropical crop for both resource-poor farmers and commercial farmers who serve international markets (George, Nissen and Brown, 1987; Sanewski. 1991; Rasai, George and Kantharajah, 1995). The following discussion focuses on the challenges involved in developing the crop, particularly those related to infrastructure, institutional support and market factors. `Snow White´ TM (hansawhit(S) - a new strawberry cultivar with white fruits Introduction The cultivation history of white-fruited strawberries is much older than that of red cultivars of Fragaria ×ananassa Duch. Fragaria chiloensis f. chiloensis (L.) Miller with white or pale pink fruits is cultivated for hundreds of years in Chile and Peru and was introduced to Europe in 1714. It became an ancestor of the cultivated Fragaria ×ananassa Duch. together with Fragaria virginiana Miller from North America which had been cultivated in Europe since 1623. White cultivars were always interesting for cultivation. The cultivar Fragaria ×ananassa `Weisse Ananas´, bred in 1867, survived in house gardens and germplasm collections due to its fruit colour and its fresh-fruity taste.
