SIMPLE ORIGAMI FOR CUB SCOUTS AND LEADERS Sakiko Wehrman (408) 296-6376 [email protected] ORIGAMI means paper folding. Although it is best known by this Japanese name, the art of paper folding is found all over Asia. It is generally believed to have originated in China, where paper- making methods were first developed two thousand years ago. All you need is paper (and scissors, sometimes). You can use any kind of paper. Traditional origami patterns use square paper but there are some patterns using rectangular paper, paper strips, or even circle shaped paper. Typing paper works well for all these projects. Also try newspaper, gift-wrap paper, or magazine pages. You may even want to draw a design on the paper before folding it. If you want to buy origami paper, it is available at craft stores and stationary stores (or pick it up at Japan Town or China Town when you go there on a field trip). Teach the boys how to make a square piece from a rectangular sheet. Then they will soon figure out they can keep going, making smaller and smaller squares. Then they will be making small folded trees or cups! Standard origami paper sold at a store is 15cm x 15 cm (6”x6”) but they come as small as 4cm (1.5”) and as large as 24cm (almost 9.5”). They come in different colors either single sided or double sided. They also come in different patterns, varying from traditional Japanese patterns to sparkles. When you make an origami, take your time. -

Modern Yokai How Japan embraced their monsters. What are Yokai? The kanji used for Yokai doesn’t have a simple/exact English translation. Yokai are a class of supernatural entities and spirits in Japanese folklore. They range from dangerous and aggressive to helpful and fortuitous. Some are as strong as gods, others are spirits of nature, and others are just lil’guys…who want to give you tofu on a dark road at night. Forewarning: I am NOT a yokai expert. I have tried to stay as close to the official historical information on these guys as possible, but some less accurate things may pop up. Please don’t come at me. I’m very weak and insecure. ALSO there are some adult themes throughout. Kitsune (lit. fox/ fox spirit) Two major variations. *Zenko Holy foxes are servants of the Shinto deity Inari, shrines decorated with statues and images of foxes. These holy foxes act as messengers of the gods and mediums between the celestial and human worlds, protect humans or places, provide good luck, and ward evil spirits away. We are not talking about those ones. More common are the *Yako wild foxes which delight in mischief, pranks, or evil, wild foxes trick or even possess humans, and make them behave strangely. Kitsune are often associated with fire, “kitsunebi” or Fox-fire, similar in a way to “wil-o-wisps”, created by kitsune breathing fire into lanternlight orbs to light paths for other yokai or to trick humans. Kitsune are extremely intelligent and powerful shape-shifters. They frequently harass humans by transforming into fearsome monsters *giants, trains, oni etc. -

February 2019 Issue Reexaminating TERAUCHI Masatake's Character - As a “Statesman”- KANNO Naoki, Cheif, Military Archives, Center for Military History Introduction What comes to mind when you think of TERAUCHI Masatake (1852 - 1919)? For example, at the beginning of the Terauchi Cabinet (October 1616 - September 1918), it was ridiculed as being both anachronistic and a non-constitutional cabinet. Using NISHIHARA Kamezo, also known as Terauchi's private secretary, he provided funds of up to 110 million yen to the Duan Qirui government in northern China (the Nishihara Loans). The so-called Rice Riots broke out in his final year, and Siberian Intervention began. Terauchi was also called a protégé of YAMAGATA Aritomo, the leading authority on Army soldiers from former Choshu domain (Choshu-han). On the other hand, what about the succeeding Hara Cabinet (September 1918 - November 1921)? Exactly 100 years ago, HARA Takashi had already started the cabinet that consists of all political party members, except for the three Ministers of the Army, Navy, and Foreign Affairs. After the World War I, a full-on party politics was developed in Japan as global diplomatic trends drastically changed. Compared to Hara, Terauchi has not been evaluated. After Chinese-Japanese relations deteriorated following the Twenty-One Demands in 1915, the aforementioned Nishihara Loans, implemented for recovery, were over-extended to the only northern part of China, the Duan Qirui government only for a limited time. Then, ultimately, the Loans did not lead an improvement in relationships. Thus it can be said that, until recently, Terauchi's character has been almost entirely neglected by academia. -

Washi Making Process 1. Raw Materials of Washi The typical raw materials are kozo, mitsumata, gampi and hemp. Paper /Parchment can be made from any plant which has fi ber, but these four plants are the best. The idea of using these four raw materials is from the wisdom born in the 1500-year old Japanese parchment, washi, history. 2. Peeling the Bark Kozo is harvested in winter, and the cut ends of Kozo are steamed over boiling water. Then, after cooling the steamed kozo with water, the bark is peeled off and dried. The bark at this stage is rough and called Kurokawa or Black Bark. Machine paper is made of the woody fi ber, the inner part of the plants, while washi is made of the fi ber of the bark. © 2007 Precious Pieces 3. Soaking the Black Bark in Water The black bark is soaked in water for one day. Then the black outer bark and joints will be removed. The remaining inner bark is dried in the sun. Now this bark is called white bark. The white bark is soaked in water again for fi ve or six hours and rinsed in clean cold water. I examine four poet- painters associated with the Japanese literati tradition in the Edo (1603-1867) and Meiji (1867- 1912) periods: Yosa Buson (1716-83), Ema Saikō (1787-1861), Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) and Natsume Sōseki (1867-1916). Each artist fashions a lyric subjectivity constituted by the kinds of blending found in literati painting and poetry. I argue that each artist’s thoughts and feelings emerge in the tensions generated in the process of blending forms, genres, and the ideas (aesthetic, philosophical, social, cultural, and historical) that they carry with them. -
