Susan L. Henry Renaud, Preservation Planning, National Park Service 2 Introduction Historic places are important to every community. In an age of change, they help provide a sense of needed continuity. Indeed, they greatly contribute to a sense of place which can unite residents. Also historic places, when properly presented, can attract tourists to a town. This would naturally benefit the local economy. The City of DuPont is blessed with many significant historic places. They include both buildings and sites. Together these places tell the amazing story of the DuPont area. This story began with the Nisqually Indian occupation of the land. It continued with the Euro-American explorers of the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. Then the British owned Hudson’s Bay Company in the 19th Century established a sequential series of trading posts called Fort Nisqually that changed life forever in the Southern Puget Sound region. Encounters with Native Americans, Missionaries, and American Settlers brought cooperation and conflict. The Medicine Creek Treaty and Puget Sound Indian War shifted the power to the Americans and their homesteads. Change came again in the early 20th Century when the DuPont Company bought land and set up an explosives factory. The Company employees and their families were first housed in temporary tar paper shacks, but soon the historic village of DuPont took shape. -

Box 51284 | Boston, MA 02205 nesah.org December 18, 2020 Tina McCarthy, Preservation Planner Brookline Preservation Commission Via email: [email protected] RE: 25 Cottage Street and 222 Warren Street The New England chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians (NE/SAH) strongly urges the Brookline Preservation Commission to impose a delay on the demolitions of both 25 Cottage Street and 222 Warren Street. As the home and sometimes office of architect Henry Hobson Richardson during the most important part of his too brief career, 25 Cottage Street is of an importance that needs no explanation to the members of your Commission. The role of the house and site in Richardson’s career exactly parallels that of the nearby “Fairsted,” a National Historic Landmark now operated as the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site to interpret the career of Richardson’s sometimes collaborator. In addition, 25 Cottage Street is one of a handful of surviving examples of the rare, so-called Jamaica Planter style of early 19th century summer houses that are almost unique to Brookline – another example being Isabella Stewart Gardner’s Green Hill, which stands between 25 Cottage Street and Fairsted in the Green Hill Historic District. If 25 Cottage Street were in Boston or Cambridge, it would certainly be considered for landmark status; in addition to its individual importance, 25 Cottage Street is identified as a property of “major historical significance” in the Green Hill Historic District. The loss of 25 Cottage Street would have a negative effect on the community’s historic character. -

It is too personal a story to interest outsiders. To the members of my own generation I make no ex cuse for it. We have grown old enough to learn that our forebears still live on in us; that we owe most of our qual ities, aptitudes and weaknesses to them as truly as we do the color of our eyes or the shapes of our noses. They molded our characters by tradition and example. They speak to us daily from the fields they tilled, the shops, homes and memorials they built and the trees tLey planted. But to the youngsters, now so eagerly peering forward into the future that they are impatient of things past, I shall also give this book. Some day when they come to realize that they too are only ancestors, leading their children by the hand, as their parents led them, into the brief spotlight we call life, and then bidding them good-bye as these children will ag~in lead and bid good-bye to others, they may care to glance back at a few of the folk who marched before in the same endless procession. One of my daughters came back from school the other day full of scorn for history because it was only about "old dead people fighting." I should agree, my dear, if by V "fighting" you mean merely military battles, most of which have left no durable result and only clogged the march of human progress. -

Brown In a discreet corner beside the entrance to Austin Hall (1881-1884) at Harvard University stands a small rectangular plaque carved with the initials of the building's architect, Henry Hobson Richardson. But also hidden in the design are geometric patterns that are significant clues to Richardson's design methodology (See Figure #1 and Photo #10). The plaque itself measures about one foot by two and a half feet and is placed about six feet off the ground to the left of the three entrance arches. Along with Richardson's initials there is hewn a curvilinear design interwoven with a triangle and a circle, a set of proportional scaling dividers, and crossed architectural dividers. At the outside edge of the plaque carved spirals articulate six focus points. Intriguingly, when one puts together these different elements, the plaque defines the essence of the Golden Section proportioning system and some of its basic permutations that Richardson used throughout his career. Since Richardson himself wrote so little about his architecture, it is interesting to find such a critical and revealing statement actually carved in one of his building with his own initials. This article will examine proportions in the design of Richardson's buildings and attempt to understand the importance he placed on proportions as a tool in the design process. To do this I will give a basic explanation of the Golden Section and how Richardson revealed it in the Austin Hall plaque. Then after a brief historical view of proportions and how Richardson started to use them, I will do a detailed building analysis of proportional uses in one of Richardson's smaller buildings, the Crane Library (1880-1882). -

WHEREAS, the City of DuPont began work on its annual Comprehensive Plan Amendment Cycle in April 2005 to add polices to the above cited portions of the DuPont Comprehensive Plan in confonnance with requirements of the Washington State GMA; and WHEREAS, all proposed amendments have been found to be consistent with each other and are consistent with the current Comprehensive Plan; and WHEREAS, the Growth Management Act requires each jurisdiction to establish public participation procedures whereby amendment to the Comprehensive Plan are considered by the City of DuPont; and WHEREAS, the City held two community workshops on the proposed amendments, and WHEREAS, the DuPont Planning Agency held seven public hearings on the proposed amendments; and WHEREAS, the DuPont Planning Agency conducted three area wide site visits; and WHEREAS, the Planning Agency, after due consideration submitted recommendations to the City Council on each of the proposed amendments, and WHEREAS, the City Council held a public hearing on the proposed amendments on July 11 ,2006; and WHEREAS, the proposed amendments are in the best interest ofthe citizens of the City of DuPont; and WHEREAS, at the conclusion of its review and deliberation on July 25, 2006, the City Council approved the amendments to the Comprehensive Plan as shown in the attached exhibits 1-3 incorporated by this reference. -
