Recognizing that museums created by industries have a potential for revealing the char­ acteristics of both industry and technology, this study was directed toward exploring the nature of these museums and determining their effectiveness in reflecting industrial characteristics. The text describes the methods whereby "museums of industry" are studied and charts their growth and demise. Examination is made of museum contents, display techniques, publications and other elements. Representa­ tions of industry are detailed and related to their applications in the curriculum of industrial arts education. Acknowledgment is gratefully made to all parti­ cipating companies, curators, and directors of museums and especially to the personnel in "museums of industry" who were extremely cooperative in furnishing opportunities from which interviews, literature, photographs, and written ii reports were gathered. Number of Items Displayed in Each of the Museums Studied..................................13b ix c h a p t e r I MUSEUMS OF INDUSTRY Skyrocketing technological advancements have generated an economic and industrial explosion far greater than that of the Industrial Revolution (1750-1850). This heritage from American industry must be recognized by the school. In order to develop meaningful curricula, it must be translated into useable instruments for the classroom and laboratory by educators who search for experiences that effectively enrich and stimulate learning. At the turn of the century, it was possible to watch a craftsman fashion the tools or products of his trade. Neighbors were able to view the blacksmith making horseshoes, the carpenter building a house or barn, the cabinetmaker styling furniture, and the potter forming dishes or bowls. Such processes were out in the open for all to see; however, with the emergence of large scale industry and mass production and automation, such work was of necessity performed behind the walls of buildings. In an age of change, they help provide a sense of needed continuity. Indeed, they greatly contribute to a sense of place which can unite residents. Also historic places, when properly presented, can attract tourists to a town. This would naturally benefit the local economy. The City of DuPont is blessed with many significant historic places. They include both buildings and sites. Together these places tell the amazing story of the DuPont area. This story began with the Nisqually Indian occupation of the land. It continued with the Euro-American explorers of the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. Then the British owned Hudson’s Bay Company in the 19th Century established a sequential series of trading posts called Fort Nisqually that changed life forever in the Southern Puget Sound region. Encounters with Native Americans, Missionaries, and American Settlers brought cooperation and conflict. The Medicine Creek Treaty and Puget Sound Indian War shifted the power to the Americans and their homesteads. Change came again in the early 20th Century when the DuPont Company bought land and set up an explosives factory. The Company employees and their families were first housed in temporary tar paper shacks, but soon the historic village of DuPont took shape.

    ACTIVITIES AND ATTRACTIONS Imagine yourself sitting in a park on the Seattle waterfront, a double-tall latte and an almond croissant close at hand. The snowy peaks of the Olympic Mountains are shimmering on the far side of Puget Sound, and the ferryboats are coming and going across Elliott Bay. It's a summer day, and the sun is shining. It just doesn't get much better than this unless, of course, you swap the latte for a microbrew and catch a 9:30pm summer sunset. No wonder people love this town so much! Seattle is a city of views, and the must-see panorama is, of course, the view from the top of the Space Needle. With the 21st century in full swing, this image of the future looks decidedly mid-20th-century modern but still it's hard to resist an expensive elevator ride in any city. You can even take a monorail straight out of The Jetson’s to get there (and pass right through the Frank Gehry-designed Experience Music Project en route). EMP, as the Experience Music Project has come to be known, is one of Seattle's latest architectural oddities. Its swooping, multicolored, metal-skinned bulk rises at the foot of the Space Needle, proof that real 21st-century architecture looks nothing like the vision of the future people dreamed of when the Space Needle was built for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. EMP is the brainchild of Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen, who built this rock 'n' roll cathedral to house his vast collection of Northwest rock memorabilia.
