HP0050 Robert Beatty-Transcript
HP0050 Robert Beatty-transcript. This recording is the copyright of the British Entertainment History Project. The transcript is not verbatim. Interviewer Roy Fowler. Interview Date: 18th August 1988. SIDE 1, TAPE 1 Roy Fowler: You've been in this country 50 years now. Robert Beatty: More now, I came over in 1937. I went to Toronto for a year and in 1939 1 got a job understudying Ray Massey and walk on in Idiot's Delight, that ran till the end of ‘38, then I went back to Canada to visit my family for a few months, and then I came back and did Grouse in June at the Criterion right to the beginning of the war, I think we were the last play that closed in the West End. Roy Fowler: You were almost from the beginning a West End actor. Robert Beatty: I was. I regret that in some ways, I think it would have done me a lot of good to go into rep for 6 months or more. Because I always think it's a good training for people on the stage. Roy Fowler: What did RADA give you? Robert Beatty: Not a great deal, it did help me what was going on in the scene, what agents one should approach and go and see. Roy Fowler: So it was more business oriented. Robert Beatty: I think it was in some ways, perhaps I'm being unkind to the people who were there, perhaps one was subconsciously taking in the stuff when one is rehearsing stuff, doing plays, being directed by people at RADA, but I was only there about three terms I think. -
First Ever 4K Uhd Restoration
FIRST EVER 4K UHD RESTORATION ONE OF THE BEST BRITISH COMEDIES EVER MADE CELEBRATES ITS 65TH ANNIVERSARY WITH 4K UHD RESTORATION AND INTERNATIONAL THEATRICAL & HE RELEASE WATCH THE NEW TRAILER HERE DOWNLOAD THE NEW TRAILER HERE DOWNLOAD NEW POSTER HERE September 24th 2020: To celebrate the 65th anniversary of Ealing Studios’ flawless THE LADYKILLERS, STUDIOCANAL will be releasing the first ever 4k restoration of the 1955 black comedy from the original 3- strip Technicolor negative, showcasing director Alexander Mackendrick’s vision in its full glory. THE LADYKILLERS follows the hilarious capers of a group of small-time crooks, taking on more they can handle in the form of their sweet, but slightly dotty, elderly landlady Mrs Wilberforce (BAFTA Award-winning actress Katie Johnson; How To Murder A Rich Uncle). This group of seedy misfits are planning a security van robbery and rent a room from Mrs Wilberforce in her rickety Victorian house next to King’s Cross station from which to base their operation. To conceal their true purpose, they pose as a string quartet, though they cannot play a note and are in fact miming to a recording of Boccherini’s Minuet. The gang pull off the robbery but none of them could have predicted that their greatest obstacle to escaping with the loot would be their tiny hostess. THE LADYKILLERS features an all-star line-up of the finest comedy actors of the era: Alec Guinness (Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Lavender Hill Mob) plays the gang’s mastermind ‘Professor Marcus’; Cecil Parker (A French Mistress) is Claude otherwise known as ‘Major Courtney’; Peter Sellers (I’m Alright Jack) is Harry aka ‘Mr Robinson’; Herbert Lom (The Pink Panther) is Louis aka ‘Mr Harvey’ and Danny Green (A Kid For Two Farthings) plays One Round also known as ‘Mr Lawson’. -

John Exshaw.3
Page 27 JESS FRANCO, or THE MISFORTUNES OF VIRTUE John Exshaw El sueño de la razon produce monstruos (The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters) Francisco Goya y Lucientes, Los Caprichos, plate 43, (17971798) In his book, Jess Franco: El sexo del horror, the Spanish film historian Carlos Aguilar closes a chapter with the following remark: “It is really true that, in his own way, Jesus Franco represents a damn peculiar case . .” (1) That Jess Franco can produce such a perplexed (and exasperated) response in a compatriot who was, after all, engaged in writing a booklength biographical and critical overview goes some way to illustrate the difficulties encountered in trying to come to grips with Jesús Franco Manera, a director whose staggering output of something like 180 films in fortyfive years contrives to make words like ‘maverick’, ‘obsessive’, ‘enigma’, or even ‘deranged’, seem sadly inadequate. Some might question whether it is worth “coming to grips” with Franco at all. His detractors are legion, and, despite the publication of three serious studies (2) and a veritable host of admiring magazine articles, it is fair to say that Franco and his films still fly well below the radar of respectable critical attention; considered, when considered at all, to be beneath both notice and contempt. In part, of course, this attitude is simply a hangover from what might be termed ‘La Plus longue nuit des auteurs’, the Cahiers du Cinémainspired revolution which, having done sterling work in elevating the importance of the Seventh Art, then proceeded, like an earlier French Revolution, to overstay its welcome, descending into a kind of intellectual Terror in which certain directors of genre films were elevated to the Pantheon (particularly if they laboured in the more obscure depths of the Hollywood system) while others (mainly European) were simply ignored. -

s6s r i w°/Ia ym ICsa ui S" cs . .. ....................... ....... Dear Colleagues, Writers and directors, working in the kind of collaboration that dignifies both of our profes- sions, stand together once again in our official identities as the Writers Guild of America, west and the Directors Guild of America, to present the Preston Sturges Award in recognition of a career achievement in filmmaking. Our honoree is Blake Edwards, the third artist to be so selected, preceded by Richard Brooks and Billy Wilder. How proud we are to have been in their presence and to be working at the same crafts! Somewhere, Preston Sturges is smiling; surely Blake Edwards is a talent after his own heart. Consider Blake's body of work, outlined in detail elsewhere in this publication. It is the journey of an instinctive artist learning his craft. A journey through the latter days of the legendary Hollywood studio system, writing low-budget westerns and romantic comedies, then directing his own scripts. Then the gradual development of a personal style, a "touch." Then, in 1963, his script (with Maurice Richlin) and his direction of The Pink Panther, and film buffs throughout the world knew that they had another stylist to enjoy. (Remember the spinning globe of the earth, and Inspector Clouseau inadvertently touching it, and spinning himself right to the floor?) After that, Blake's work, unaffected by the storytelling fads of the moment, showed the maturing of a master. He developed into one of those rare creative minds who holds true to his unique talent and to the cinematic tradition of the great era of visual comedy of Chaplin, Keaton and Harold Lloyd, and later, Preston Sturges himself. -

Seizing the opportunity to exploit his well-known honesty, actress Suzy Courtois (Nadia Gray) convinces her lover, the corrupt city council member Castel Benac (Herbert Lom), to hire Topaze as a managing director for one of his shady businesses. But when Topaze learns he is being used, he cunningly turns the tables on Benac and ends up with all the money. ABOUT THE FILM Seller’s first and only credited directorial feature, MR. TOPAZE displays the British comic genius at the peak of his powers alongside his former “Ladykillers” cohort and future “Pink Panther” nemesis Herbert Lom in addition to a stellar supporting cast that includes Nadia Gray, Leo McKern, Billie Whitelaw and Michael Gough. Based on a play by Marcel Pagnol and long considered a “lost” classic, MR. TOPAZE was digitally restored in 2K at the request of the British public from the last known surviving 35mm prints held in the BFI National Archive. A disappointment for Sellers at the box office, the film has rarely been seen since its 1961 UK debut and subsequent 1962 U.S.
