MS-1: Wright Brothers Collection PART III WRIGHT FAMILY PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION This series includes many original photographic prints made by the Wrights from their own negatives shortly after the images were taken. The Wrights exposed at least 303 gelatin dry plate negatives in the course of documenting their process of invention. All of their glass plate negatives were given to the Library of Congress in 1949, but many of their original prints remained with the Estate of Orville Wright. Many of the Wright Brothers’ original negatives were damaged in Dayton’s great flood of 1913, when they were submerged for up to four days. The Wright State University collection includes some images for which no negatives exist at the Library of Congress and so many of these prints are unique. In addition, this collection includes hundreds of prints collected by the Wrights through their association with other aviation pioneers such as Octave Chanute, and a great variety of aeronautical prints either collected by them, or sent to them by well-wishers through the years. While the major prints exist in both collections, both the Wright State University collection and the Wright collection in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress contain many images that are unique to each collection. Wilbur and Orville Wright began photographing their experiences on the Outer Banks using a 4 x 5 inch dry plate camera. In 1902 they purchased a Korona view camera which used 5 x 7 inch dry plates. They developed their negatives and made prints in the darkroom they set up at their home in Dayton. -

Martin Digger had recently applied for a job at Shinola, the Detroit-based company that manufactures consumer products ranging from watches to bicycles. He was excited about the possibility of returning to his hometown to use his new marketing degree as a brand assistant. To prepare for his interview, he walked to the closest coffee shop, ordered an extra-large coffee, and opened his laptop to review the history of the firm and Shinola’s products. He was glad to see that the articles overwhelmingly praised the company. According to the Shinola website, Of all the things we make, the return of manufacturing jobs might just be the thing we’re most proud of. Shinola is founded in the belief that products should be well-made and built to last. Across a growing number of categories, Shinola stands for skill at scale, the preservation of craft, and the beauty of industry.1 Those values resonated with Martin and his hopes for both Detroit and his own work. However, Martin paused when he came across one article that was critical of the firm. Shinola’s entire presence is predicated on its ties to the City of Detroit. The justification for the cheapest men’s watch being $550? For bicycles that cost a minimum of $1,950? American manufacturing costs more. Quality materials cost more. American products are inherently worth more. Like buying a pair of Toms helps some poor Third World kid, by buying a two thousand dollar bike you’re doing your part to help rebuild a fallen American city. -

Jak podają źródła, w 1948 roku francuski badacz, kompozytor, akustyk Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) nagrał za pomocą mikrofonu dźwięki naturalne m.in. (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku. Thesis Project by Lauren Barnes University of Central Oklahoma April 2020 Barnes 2 Abstract: The Movement is a young adult dystopian fantasy novel, 207 pages long with 70,383 words, which takes place one hundred years in the future when a select few can gain access into people’s minds as the main character struggles to understand the truth of her society. Relevant creative work in the YA dystopian fantasy genre include: The Giver by Lois Lowry, Scythe by Neal Schusterman, the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Ready Player One by Ernest Cline among many others. YA dystopian fantasy novels provide young adults with a deeper examination of the world around them steeped in fantasy settings and themes accessible to them and this novel hopes to add to that conversation. The Movement presents a possible future to America’s invasive politics and advertisements by creating a world where the fight has moved into the mind and how one could defend themselves. Two of the major creative challenges revolved around the storyline itself: content and length. Completing a novel and creating a storyline with enough happening to keep the reader interested can be difficult. Through extensive scheduling to create a successful writing regimen and letting the story develop naturally, opposed to attempting to plan the entire novel prior to writing it, the Movement was completed with future possibilities to continue Maya’s story. This novel hopes to add to the YA dystopian fantasy genre by pairing dreams and mental landscapes with consent in a form accessible to young adults during their formative years.
