  • Japan (Korea) Travelogue April 9 to April 30, 2016
JAPAN (KOREA) TRAVELOGUE APRIL 9 TO APRIL 30, 2016 Perhaps a few words of explanation for why I've put Korea in parentheses. I have two reasons: (1) Our Tauck tour begins in Kyoto, but this city has no international airport for direct flights from the U.S. The closest large airport is in Osaka, but it has no non-stop flights from Seattle. One choice for us is to fly non-stop to Tokyo and then on to Osaka. But it turns out that it is enormously cheaper to fly Korean Air from Seattle to Seoul and then from Seoul to Osaka. So ... we will be in Korea, but only for about two hours on the way to Japan and for another two hours on our return to Seattle. (2) The 14-day Tauck tour that we've signed up for ("Cruising the Land of the Rising Sun") begins in Kyoto and terminates in Tokyo; the ship makes port at eight locations in Japan and one in South Korea, so this justifies my listing the latter country in the title, but only parenthetically. Does the ship make its brief Korean stop just for the fun of it? Certainly not. Maritime law requires it! For the details, vide infra (which is Latin for see below in less highfalutin English, p. 22). In the days just before our departure, both Lee and I have come down with colds, complicated by attacks of hay fever more severe than any we've ever before experienced. Aside from the sneezing and wheezing (nice rhyme, eh?), our eyes are swollen and filled with tears that leak continually and make seeing difficult; also, our eyes itch and burn.

This phrase is said to have originated from the calls of people working to build Fukuchiyama Castle when they carried heavy stones and other building materials. The people of the town started out singing and dancing with the calls. And now the slow relaxing sound of Dokkoise brings Japanese people nostalgic feelings. • Late Paleozoic Foraminifers Contained in Limestone Conglomerate of the Maizuru Group in the Oye Area, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan
Original article Late Paleozoic foraminifers contained in limestone conglomerate of the Maizuru Group in the Oye area, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan Fumio KOBAYASHI Division of Natural History, Museum of Nature and Human Activities, Hyogo/Division of Earth Science, Institute of Natural and Environmental Sciences, University of Hyogo, Yayoigaoka 6, Sanda, Hyogo 669-1546, Japan Abstract Limestone conglomerate of the Permian Maizuru Group in the Oye area, Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture is divided into two main types based on the difference of their matrices as well as that in other areas. Limestone conglomerate with a calcareous argillaceous matrix yields Lepidolina kumaensis, L. takagamiensis, and other foraminifers characteristic in the Lepidolina kumaensis fauna. Presence of Colaniella parva contained in this conglomerate as a bioclast indicates that the limestone conglomerate having the Lepidolina kumaensis fauna in the Middle and Upper formations of the Maizuru Group ranges into the Lopingian in age and is not restricted to the Capitanian (Midian) as previously thought. Pre-Capitanian fossils are exclusively found in limestone con- glomerate with an arenaceous matrix in the Upper and Gujyo formations of the Maizuru Group. Various forms of foraminifers from the Early Carboniferous (Serpukhovian) to Early Permian (Artinskian) have been identified in the Oye area. Two species of Lepidolina, L. kumaensis and L. takagamiensis, are systematically described from the limestone conglomerate of calcareous argillaceous matrix. Key words: Late Paleozoic foraminifers, limestone conglomerate, Maizuru Group, Oye area, Lepidolina kumaensis fauna Introduction Hayasaka, 1990). Based on these foraminiferal faunas the Middle Formation was referred to the Capitanian The Maizuru Group in the Maizuru Terrane of SW (late Middle Permian) and the Upper to the Japan consists of four formations: Lower, Middle, Wuchiapingian (early Late Permian) and Upper, and Gujyo formations in ascending order Changhsingian (late Late Permian).

In this group, also, five faunules-two fusulinids- and three brachiopQd-molluscan-faunules-are distinguished and their stratigraphic relations are discussed. This group is correlated to the middle to upper Permians in Japan and Asia. Faunal succes- sion is discussed with paleogeographic aspects in the latest paleozoic orogeny. I. Introduetion Japanese paleozoic formations in areas all over Japan have been studied for years since the beginning of geological studies in this country. In particular, enormous traRsactions conceming the southern Kitakami Mountains were pre- sented. After that, several features of the orogenic movements in the paleozo!c era have been made clear. With regards to the late Peymian orogeny, MiNATo proposed a paleogeographic view of the Toyoma InlaRd Sea, which was surrounded by uplifting lands and deposited with black mud. This Toyoma series contains poor fos'sils (some BereltoP}ion and other gastropods), although formations }ower than this are rich in Åíossils of brachiopods, fusulinidS' and many other animals.

The results of investigation, of pebbles of the conglomerate which associate with the sandstones, of heavy minerals of the sandstones, and of quartz irradiation effect are examined. Arkosic and non-arkosic sandstones in the Carnian N~2 Formation and N-3 Formation of the Nabae Group are studied somewhat in detail, and the environment of deposition of these stones are suggested, in comparison with that of the sandstones of the Lower and Middle Triassic Yakuno Group.
