Dear Delegates in the Administrative Council, We have been prosecuting the referenced patent applications directed to critical innovations for public health at EPO for last 10 years. However, rather than advancing the innovations EPO has been obstructing them. EPO statements in the prosecution history evidence that rejections have been applied to oblige us to reduce the claimed scope, even though as per provisions of European Patent Convention, the subject claims are perfectly patentable. A narrow patent is not synonymous with a quality patent. The metric of quality disregarded by EPO is genuine innovation, measured by betterment of life achieved, though that is the very purpose of patents and is built into the law. For example, solutions to critical unmet needs are inventive even if claims are otherwise obvious (GL1, G-VII, 10.3). Narrow patents in the nutrition arts have already caused great harm to public health and created patent-practice- made humanitarian crises by creating misinformation and taken us farther away from solving nutritional problems, preventative solutions, and sustainability. -

E-mail: Abstract: The Rondônia Natural Resources Management Project (PLANAFLORO) was a strategic program developed in partnership between the Brazilian Government and The World Bank in 1992, with the purpose of stimulating the sustainable development and protection of the Amazon in the state of Rondônia. More than a decade after the PLANAFORO program concluded, the aim of the present work is to recover and share the information from the long-abandoned plant collections made during the project’s ecological-economic zoning phase. Most of the material analyzed was sterile, but the fertile voucher specimens recovered are listed here. The material examined represents 378 species in 234 genera and 76 families of angiosperms. Some 8 genera, 68 species, 3 subspecies and 1 variety are new records for Rondônia State. It is our intention that this information will stimulate future studies and contribute to a better understanding and more effective conservation of the plant diversity in the southwestern Amazon of Brazil. Leigh Associate Professor Ripan Malhi ABSTRACT All animals, including primates, face the challenge of obtaining sufficient energy and nutrients despite 1) variation in food availability across habitats and seasons and 2) temporal fluctuations in nutritional requirements due to life history processes. Because variation in food availability or nutritional requirements requires animals to vary energy and nutrient intake, vary energy and nutrient expenditure, or vary digestion and assimilation of energy and nutrients to meet demands, many studies of primates examine shifts in primate activity budgets and foraging patterns across seasons and life history stages. However, few studies establish a direct relationship between activity and diet composition and energy and nutrient intake. Additionally, the mechanisms that primates use to digest and assimilate their food are largely overlooked. Mutualistic gut microbial communities impact host digestive efficiency and assimilation by breaking down otherwise indigestible material and providing hosts with energy and nutrients. Laboratory studies have demonstrated that gut microbial communities shift in response to changes in host diet and physiology, and while these shifts may allow hosts to digest food items more efficiently to meet energy and nutrient demands, no data are currently available to explore this relationship in wild primates. -

The feeding traces in fossil ginger leaves and the conserved phylogenetic relationships seen today in certain clades of hispine beetles on their monocot hosts point towards a long and intimate plant-insect evolutionary relationship. Studies in the 1970s and 1980s documented the rich fauna of rolled-leaf hispine beetles and their association with the Neotropical monocot family Heliconiaceae in Central America. In this report, the taxonomic breadth of these early studies is expanded to include species in the families, Marantaceae, Poaceae, Arecaceae and Costaceae, all with species occurring sympatrically with the Heliconiaceae in lowland Panama. Additionally, the analysis is widened to include open-leaf scraping and internal leaf-mining clades of hispoid Cassidinae. The censuses add more than 5080 Cassidinae herbivore occurrence records on both open and unfurled new leaf rolls of 4600 individual plants. Cluster analysis reveals that while many Hispinae species tend to group with plant species in only one of the three monocot orders, 9 of 16 Hispinae species on Zingiberales hosts were recorded in substantial numbers on both the Heliconiaceae and the Marantaceae, indicating an underlying pattern of feeding flexibility at the host plant family level. -
