She often comments on the in- tersemiotic diffi culties involved in this transformation by referring to the Byzantine iconoclas- tic controversy. Using Trotzig’s notion of the iconoclastic controversy as a starting point, the present article investigates her understanding of the picture-word-transformation problems. The line of argument comprises fi ve stages. In the fi rst stage, the main issue of the article is presented and specifi ed. In the second stage, it is argued that previous critical approaches to Trotzig’s Byzantinism in most cases have been based on misleadingly anachronistic and mainly Occidental categories. In the third stage, the Byzantine iconoclastic controversy is related to the distinctive character of the theological thought of the Eastern Church. In the fourth stage, the Byzantine iconophile and iconoclast theories are applied to Trotzig’s literary works. A close reading of a representative prose poem of hers, “Teologiska variationer” (“Theological vari- ations”), demonstrates that her works unequivocally support the icon theology of the icono- dules. In the closing fi fth stage, Trotzig’s notion of the Byzantine iconoclastic controversy is reconstructed on the basis of her essays and interviews in which she explains her own as well as other authors’ intersemiotic diffi culties. -

Open Letter To Mr Hu Jintao President of the People’s Republic of China An Appeal about China Your Excellency, Mr President, We, undersigned organizations and individuals, welcome your visit to Sweden, whose purpose, we understand, is to reinforce economic and political cooperation between China and Sweden. We also realize that you want to contribute to a fruitful exchange of cultural activities and ideas between our countries. In this context we wish to express our sincere desire for the development of a vivid cooperation concerning thoughts, values, art, theatre, music, all kinds of creative human contacts between Sweden and China, the world’s largest nation, with an unbroken history and culture of many thousand years. We are convinced that economic cooperation between countries and people cannot be successful in the long run unless there is a deeper understanding, involving a free flow of information and thought between the countries and within them. In this regard we must draw attention to an imbalance. We are worried by the information that reaches us concerning the rule of law and human rights in your country. What particularly concerns us is the actual lack of freedom of expression, publication, association, religion and information in China. Despite a well-conceived Constitution and several special regulations concerning media, religion and civil law, the factual rule of law in your country does not seem to be ensured in a satisfactory manner. The authorities themselves do not follow the laws properly, according to many reports. Numerous citizens are exposed to legal abuses of different kinds. Full and detailed reports about these serious conditions have been spread inside as well as outside China. -

Publikum mange måter. For Norsk Forfattersentrum har eller mottaker skal oppleve gode møter av høy det igjen vært et rekordår med mer litteratur i kvalitet. Hver gang. skolesekken, flere formidlede forfattere, høyere utbetalinger til forfatterne og høyere omsetning. Vi opplever at vi leverer, og tallene våre gjenspeiler det samme. I 2016 har vi gjort vårt for 3 Litteraturen er grenseutviskende. Fiksjon og å søke å bidra til at det har vært mye strålende virkelighet sklir over i hverandre, og det skapes litteraturformidling til alle, av høy kvalitet, og at fantastisk litteratur. Sakprosa strekker sine grenser norske forfatteres levekår er blitt satt på agendaen. og leverer fantastisk litteratur. Forfattere verden Det skal vi fortsette med. over utforsker, tester, drømmer og leker, og vi får fantastisk litteratur. Og vi trenger den. I 2016 fikk Øverland, Hagerup og Grieg sine dikt en mening som var tidsaktuell og ikke historisk. Martin Niemöllers «Likegyldighet» fra 1946 ble referert til på plakater i demonstrasjoner i USA og på sosiale medier. Jeg tror ungdommer landet over snakker om dikt på en helt annen måte i dag enn før - behovet for poesi er et helt annet. Men unge mennesker må vises til poesien, både til den eldre og den nye. God litteratur snakker til oss, vekker oss, formaner oss og kan skjelle oss ut eller gi oss store gleder – av og til samtidig. -

Norsk málsaga og þróun norsks ritmáls, frá frumnorrænum tíma, er stórbrotin saga sem nær yfir um það bil 18 aldir. Norskri málsögu er skipt eftir tímabilum í frumnorrænu, norrænu, norsku á síðmiðöldum (miðnorsku) og nútímanorsku. Norsk bókmenntasaga nær yfir 12 aldir, það er frá norrænum tíma til nútímans. Bókmenntasögunni er skipt í fjórtán tímabil strauma og stefna. Hún tekur til munnlegrar geymdar, og verka sem rituð eru á nokkrum ritmálum: norrænu, dönsku, bókmáli, nýnorsku og samísku. Ljóðlistin fær sérstaka umfjöllun fyrst almenna og síðan um evrópsk þjóðkvæði þar á meðal söfnun þeirra og varðveislu. Síðan er fjallað sérstaklega um fjóra norska 19. aldar fræðimenn, sem eiga það sameiginlegt að hafa brotið blað í sögu norsks ritmáls og bókmennta. Þeir eru: Ivar Aasen, frumkvöðull ritmáls sem byggt er á samræmdum norskum mállýskum. Knud Knudsen, hugmyndafræðingur ritmáls sem byggist á aðlögun dansks ritmáls að norskum framburði og málfræði. Aasmund O. Vinje, ljóðskáld og brautryðjandi í útgáfu á nýnorsku Aasens. Sophus Bugge, einn helsti fornkvæða og þjóðkvæðasafnari Norðmanna. Í kjölfarið fylgja þýðingar úr verkum þessara manna sem undirstrika enn frekar hugðarefni þeirra. Þar á meðal er þýðing á rómantísku náttúruljóði eftir Vinje. -

ACTA SUECO-POLONICA NR 16 (2010) ABSTRACTS KRZYSZTOF BAK Södergran and Close Reading: Some Reflections The paper examines the applicability of The New Critical method – close reading – to the poetry of Edith Södergran, one of the most prominent modernists in Swedish literature. Based on axioms of modernist aesthetics, close reading has been regarded as the optimal instrument for analyzing modernist poetry and was frequently applied to Södergran’s poems. As the paper demonstrates, several Södergran’s poems, however, are imbued with typical premodernist devices. The structure specifically investigated here is the triadical sequence protasis–epitasis–catastrophe, known from classical comedy and used as an organization principle in many of Södergran’s texts. The main artistic effects of these poems result from the comedy sequence being variously transformed at the level of action, ideas, style, narrative and intertextuality. Because of its focus on connotative imagery, the method of close reading tends to neglect these kinds of essential patterns in Södergran’s poetry. PIOTR BUKOWSKI Doomed to Untranslatability? Translating Erik Axel Karlfeldt’s Poetry into Polish The author discusses the problem of a rather poor reception of Erik Axel Karlfeldt’s lyrical work in Poland. Polish translators seem to avoid this great Swedish poet, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. There is no separate edition of Karlfeldt’s poetry in the Polish language. The interested Polish reader has to content her/himself with only 18 translated poems, dispersed in three anthologies and two literary magazines. Not even the recent wave of interest in Swedish literature in Poland could change this situation. -

De romantiska stämningarna var påtagliga i kulturella uttryck un- POSTMODERNISMEN ROMANTISKA DEN der 1980-talet, inte minst i den nordiska konsten. 1980-talet är också det decennium då postmodernismen debatterades på svenska kultur- sidor och fick sitt genomslag i konstlivet. Finns det ett samband? Påfallande många av de konstnärer som rubricerades ”postmodernis- ter” arbetade med romantiska förebilder. Samtidigt innehåller post- modernismen en antiromantisk retorik, vilket öppnar för motsägelser. Denna avhandling tar oss med tillbaka till ett omvälvande skede i svenskt konstliv. Genom en närläsning av konstkritik från perioden 1979–2007, med fokus inställt på kritikernas motsägelsefulla relation till det romantiska i utställningsprojektet Ibid., samt de tre konst- närerna Ola Billgrens, Dick Bengtssons och Max Books produktion, rekonstruerar författaren konstfältet, dess positioner och strider om tolkningsföreträde, men också den diskurs inom vilken det roman- tiska föreställs som ett utanför. Postmodernismens historieskrivning och självmedvetande tas därmed till granskning. Kristoffer Arvidsson är forskare vid Göteborgs konstmuseum. Den romantiska postmodernismen. Konstkritiken och det romantiska i 1980- och 1990-talets svenska konst är hans doktorsavhandling. Boken innehåller 28 illustrationer i färg.
