Metamorphism of Sedimentary Manganese Deposits

METAMORPHISM OF SEDIMENTARY MANGANESE DEPOSITS SUPRIYA ROY ABSTRACT: Metamorphosed sedimentary deposits of manganese occur extensively in India, Brazil, U. S. A., Australia, New Zealand, U. S. S. R., West and South West Africa, Madagascar and Japan. Different mineral-assemblages have been recorded from these deposits which may be classi- fied into oxide, carbonate, silicate and silicate-carbonate formations. The oxide formations are represented by lower oxides (braunite, bixbyite, hollandite, hausmannite, jacobsite, vredenburgite •etc.), the carbonate formations by rhodochrosite, kutnahorite, manganoan calcite etc., the silicate formations by spessartite, rhodonite, manganiferous amphiboles and pyroxenes, manganophyllite, piedmontite etc. and the silicate-carbonate formations by rhodochrosite, rhodonite, tephroite, spessartite etc. Pétrographie and phase-equilibia data indicate that the original bulk composition in the sediments, the reactions during metamorphism (contact and regional and the variations and effect of 02, C02, etc. with rise of temperature, control the mineralogy of the metamorphosed manga- nese formations. The general trend of formation and transformation of mineral phases in oxide, carbonate, silicate and silicate-carbonate formations during regional and contact metamorphism has, thus, been established. Sedimentary manganese formations, later modified by regional or contact metamorphism, have been reported from different parts of the world. The most important among such deposits occur in India, Brazil, U.S.A., U.S.S.R., Ghana, South and South West Africa, Madagascar, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Japan etc. An attempt will be made to summarize the pertinent data on these metamorphosed sedimentary formations so as to establish the role of original bulk composition of the sediments, transformation and reaction of phases at ele- vated temperature and varying oxygen and carbon dioxide fugacities in determin- ing the mineral assemblages in these deposits. -

REPRESENTATIONS OF MIND by David Lindeman A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland July 2019 © 2019 David Lindeman All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT After defending the view that we can read off the metaphysics of the things we talk about from the form and interpretation of the language we use to talk about things, I develop and defend an account of the form and interpretation of propositional attitude reports (and some closely related constructions) and then read off the metaphysics of propositional attitudes. Views on the metaphysics of speech acts, propositions, and propositionally articulated thoughts also fall out of the account. The result is a tightly knit sets of views which I think together solve a number of outstanding philosophical problems. Given the centrality and importance of the attitudes and reports thereof to our making sense of ourselves and others as minded beings, not to mention their centrality to many domains of philosophy, the hope is that this makes a contribution to our self- understanding. It should also be a contribution to cognitive science. New Mexico Bureau of Mines & Mineral Resources Resource Map 15 March 1986 Silver and gold occurrences in New Mexico by Robert M. North and Virginia T. Mclemore New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources, Socorro, New Mexico 87801 Abstract Anomalous amounts of silver and/or gold have been identified in 153 mining districts or prospect areas of New Mexico. Production from most of these occurrences has been small; figures or estimates are given when known. Thirty-five districts have produced in excess of 10,000 troy ounces of gold or 200,000 ounces of silver. Silver and gold in New Mexico occur in 14 distinct types of deposits ranging in age from Precam brian (Proterozoic) to Recent. Mid-Tertiary to Recent deposits include the placer, volcanic-epithermal, supergene copper-uranium (silver), and Great Plains Margin types. Late Cretaceous to mid-Tertiary deposits include the sedimentary-hydrothermal barite-fluorite-galena, carbonate-hosted silver (lead manganese ), lead-zinc and copper skarn, Laramide vein, and prophyry-copper types. Late Paleozoic to early Mesozoic deposits include the sedimentary-copper type and possibly some of the Permian Mississippi Valley type. Precambrian deposits include the vein and replacement and Precambrian massive-sulfide types. Deposits that have produced significant silver and/or gold as the primary product are the placer, volcanic-epithermal, Great Plains Margin, carbonate-hosted silver, and Lar amide vein types. Deposits that have produced significant precious metals as a byproduct of base metal mining include the carbonate-hosted lead-zinc, copper skarn, and porphyry-copper types. Introduction Precious metals in varying degrees of importance or 14 ppm (0.41 oz/ton) silver.
