APPENDIX E HIGH-POTENTIAL HISTORIC SITES National Trails System Act, SEC. 12. This is in keeping with our mission of promoting interest, research, and cooperation regarding geology in New Mexico. Plan for the Recovery of Desert Bighorn Sheep in New Mexico 2003-2013
PLAN FOR THE RECOVERY OF DESERT BIGHORN SHEEP IN NEW MEXICO 2003-2013 New Mexico Department of Game and Fish August 2003 Executive Summary Desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana) were once prolific in New Mexico, occupying most arid mountain ranges in the southern part of the state. Over-hunting, and disease transmission from livestock are 2 primary reasons for the dramatic decline in bighorn sheep numbers throughout the west during the early 1900s. In 1980, desert bighorn were placed on New Mexico’s endangered species list. From 1992-2003, approximately 25% of bighorn were radiocollared to learn causes of mortality driving this species towards extinction. Approximately 85% of all known-cause non-hunter killed radiocollared individuals have been killed by mountain lions. Despite the lack of a native ungulate prey base in desert bighorn range, mountain lion populations remain high, leading to the hypothesis that mountain lions are subsidized predators feeding on exotic ungulates, including cattle. Lack of fine fuels from cattle grazing have resulted in a lack of fire on the landscape. This has lead to increased woody vegetation which inhibits bighorn’s ability to detect and escape from predators. Bighorn numbers in spring 2003 in New Mexico totaled 213 in the wild, and 91 at the Red Rock captive breeding facility. This is in spite of releasing 266 bighorn from Red Rock and 30 bighorn from Arizona between 1979 and 2002. Several existing herds of desert bighorn likely need an augmentation to prevent them from going extinct. The presence of domestic sheep and Barbary sheep, which pose risks to bighorn from fatal disease transmission and aggression, respectively, preclude reintroduction onto many unoccupied mountain ranges. -

NORTHERN ARIZONA PROVINCE (024) By W.C. Butler INTRODUCTION This province covers about 59,000 sq mi, mostly in the southwestern part of the Colorado Plateau. Significant geologic features include the Grand Canyon, Kaibab Arch, Mogollon Highlands transition zone, Monument Uplift, Defiance Uplift, Black Mesa Basin, Holbrook Basin, and southern edges of the Kaiparowits and Blanding Basins. The stratigraphic section shown for northeastern Arizona has demonstrated the highest petroleum potential in Arizona. See Wilson (1962), Butler (1988a), and Dickinson (1989) for synopses of the province's geology and evolution. The lithologically and structurally complex basement of the Colorado Plateau area evolved from northwest-younging Proterozoic terranes sequentially accreted onto the Archean craton. As much as 12,000 ft of Middle and Late Proterozoic strata is preserved in possible rift-aulacogen depositional settings in central Arizona. Thick, unmetamorphosed, organic-rich Late Proterozoic strata deposited in backarc basins or continental lakes of north-central Arizona and south-central Utah have good petroleum potential. The plateau area, as a passive Paleozoic plate margin and buffered Mesozoic retro-arc platform, has been remarkably tectonically stable during Phanerozoic time. The area is characterized by blanket Paleozoic strata, as much as 6,000 ft thick, consisting of mostly shallow marine clastics and carbonates showing numerous disconformities. These strata accumulated during transgressions and regressions from both the northwest and southeast, onlapping and thinning toward the trans-continental arch – a northeast-trending positive area extending from the northeast into central Arizona. Convergence between North and South American tectonic plates, with reactivation of basement blocks, during the late Paleozoic created the plateau's fault-bounded basins and uplifts. -

McIntosh INTRODUCTION The geologic map of the Truth or Consequences 30 x 60 minute quadrangle has grown out of the Ph.D. dissertations and related work of the authors in south-central New Mexico. Funding and support for this work was provided by New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources. And while the authors have mapped extensive portionsof the sheet in either detailed or reconnaissance fashion, large areas of the sheet have been compiled from existing maps (see attached diagram for sources). This is an in-progress status report. Many aspects of the complex geology found in this area are yet to be worked out. Descriptions of stratigraphy and swcture provided in this report are brief. For more details, reference is given to Eggleston (1986), McIntosh (1989), Harrison (1990), and Lozinsky and Hawley (1986). Tsf Santa Fe Group: Oligocene and younger basin fill of the Rio Grande drainage west of the Continental Divide: basal beds are intercalated with Oligocene volcanic rocks,are moderately well indurated, more voluminous, younger beds overlie basal beds with angular unconformity andare generally near horizontalin attitude. The Santa Fe Group is dominantly volcaniclastic and heterolithic. -
