The town was established in 1876 on a farm called Visgat, on the Vredefort crater. The Vredefort Dome (Crater) is currently the largest and one of the oldest known meteor impact site in the world. Kroonstad is the third largest city in the Free State, which is approximately 2 hours from Gauteng. It is an important railway junction on the main line from Cape Town to Johannesburg.
