Catalan Modernism and Vexillology Sebastià Herreros i Agüí Abstract Modernism (Modern Style, Modernisme, or Art Nouveau) was an artistic and cultural movement which flourished in Europe roughly between 1880 and 1915. In Catalonia, because this era coincided with movements for autonomy and independence and the growth of a rich bourgeoisie, Modernism developed in a special way. Differing from the form in other countries, in Catalonia works in the Modern Style included many symbolic elements reflecting the Catalan nationalism of their creators. This paper, which follows Wladyslaw Serwatowski’s 20 ICV presentation on Antoni Gaudí as a vexillographer, studies other Modernist artists and their flag-related works. Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Llimona, Miquel Blay, Alexandre de Riquer, Apel·les Mestres, Antoni Maria Gallissà, Joan Maragall, Josep Maria Jujol, Lluís Masriera, Lluís Millet, and others were masters in many artistic disciplines: Architecture, Sculpture, Jewelry, Poetry, Music, Sigillography, Bookplates, etc. and also, perhaps unconsciously, Vexillography. EL COMPROMÍS DE POMPEU FABRA AMB L’IEC POMPEU FABRA I L’INSTITUT D’ESTUDIS CATALANS JORDI MIR I PARACHE, INSTITUT D’ESTUDIS CATALANS Simposi Pompeu Fabra.indb 237 31/7/20 9:00 Quan ens posem a analitzar el lligam entre Pompeu Fabra i l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans arribem ben aviat i invariablement a la conclusió que per a Fabra l’Ins- titut va ser l’eina que li va permetre materialitzar el seu projecte, llargament viscut, de codificació de la llengua, i que l’Institut va trobar en ell la persona amb la capacitat necessària per dur a bon terme l’objectiu que s’havia proposat. L’Ins- titut i Fabra es van complementar, doncs, en una simbiosi perfecta. Per arribar a aquesta coincidència positiva calia, però, conjuminar volun- tats. I això no va ser difícil perquè la decisió de l’Institut, en la persona de Prat de la Riba com a impulsor màxim del projecte, d’aconseguir el retorn de Fabra de Bilbao i la seva incorporació a la nounada Secció Filològica va ser corresposta per Fabra amb el lliurament absolut a l’encàrrec que assumia. Com que de com es resolguessin aquells moments inicialment vacil·lants de la Secció n’havia de sortir el resultat desitjable, pot ser interessant de veure quin va ser el camí que hi va menar. La Secció va ser creada, ensems que la de Ciències, el dia 14 de febrer de 1911 i per constituir-la van ser designats els set membres següents: Antoni Maria Alcover, Lluís Segalà, Pompeu Fabra, Joan Maragall, Frederic Clascar, Àngel Guimerà i Josep Carner, dels quals només Alcover i Fabra tenien la lingüística com a primer objectiu.

Vol.1 No.2, pp.65-100 ❙Article❙ Education as a Mirror of Spanish Society: Challenges and Policies towards Multiple Diversity* Ricard Zapata-Barrero** 1) Abstract The ways in which the dominant cultural majority frames the educa- tional system, determines perceptions of its own identity and under- standings of the ‘other.’ In this article I take a political approach, by ex- amining the management of cultural diversity within Spanish education policies, treating “education as the mirror of society”. This article ana- lyzes Spanish challenges and policies approaches towards the manage- ment of immigration related diversity in education. The main finding is that there is not one approach, but several, due to both the decentralized character of the education system and the multiplicity of diversity that is at stake (i.e. language, religion, culture etc.). ❚Key Words : Education, Diversity, Immigration, Spain, Europe.
