Although partially studied by a few Chinese scholars, it has never been fully displayed and discussed in the Western world. This set of sky maps (12 hour angle maps in quasi-cylindrical projection and a circumpolar map in azimuthal projection), displaying the full sky visible from the Northern hemisphere, is up to now the oldest complete preserved star atlas from any civilisation. It is also the first known pictorial representation of the quasi-totality of the Chinese constellations. This paper describes the history of the physical object – a roll of thin paper drawn with ink. We analyse the stellar content of each map (1339 stars, 257 asterisms) and the texts associated with the maps. We establish the precision with which the maps are drawn (1.5 to 4° for the brightest stars) and examine the type of projections used. -

Observations using the Sky Quality Meter (SQM) The Sky Quality Meters (SQMs) add a new twist to the GLOBE at Night program. They expand the citizen science experience by making it more scientific and more precise. The SQMs allow citizen-scientists to map a city at different locations to identify dark sky oases and even measure changes over time beyond the GLOBE at Night campaign. It consists of a humorous 24-minute show and educator’s package. The Orion Educator’s Guide is designed for Planetarians, Teachers, and parents. The information is researched, organized, and laid out so that the educator need not spend hours coming up with lesson plans or labs. This has already been accomplished by certified educators. The guide is written to alleviate the fear of space and the night sky (that many elementary and middle school teachers have) when it comes to that section of the science lesson plan. It is an excellent tool that allows the parents to be a part of the learning experience. The guide is devised in such a way that there are plenty of visuals to assist the educator and student in finding the Winter constellations. -

If Cygnus is out you will be able to find it. The other 12 constellations included with your Horizon Globe are significant for a different reason; they helped ancient astronomers tell the time of year and time of night before clocks were invented. You probably know the names of these special constellations, they are the signs of the Zodiac. The Zodiac comprises Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. These twelve constellations all fit on the ecliptic. Coincidence? In the next chapter we’ll get started by looking at one very important constellation. The first Guidepost, Orion, will help you find and remember the rest of the constellations. * The Big Dipper is technically an asterism, not a constellation. A constellation is one of 88 star groupings that have a definite names. -

Nydegger Utah State University, Kitt Peak National Observatory, National Optical Astronomy Observatory Advisor: Constance E. Walker National Optical Astronomy Observatory ABSTRACT Eight housed data logging Sky Quality Meters (SQMs) are being used to gather light pollution data in southern Arizona: one at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) in Tucson, four located at cardinal points at the outskirts of the city, and three situated at observatories on surrounding mountain tops. To examine specifically the effect of artificial lights, the data are reduced to exclude three natural contributors to lighting the night sky, namely, the sun, the moon, and the Milky Way. Faulty data (i.e., when certain parameters were met) were also excluded. Data were subsequently analyzed by a recently developed night sky brightness model (Duriscoe (2013)). During the monsoon season in southern Arizona, the SQMs were removed from the field to be tested for sensitivity to a range of wavelengths and temperatures. -

There are two website links to online education games to review place values in the section. -ACTIVITY - HOW MUCH BIGGER IS ONE NUMBER THAN ANOTHER NUMBER? This activity involves having students listen to the sound that different powers of 10 of BBs makes in a pan, and dividing large groups into smaller groups so that students get a sense for what it means to say that 1,000 is 10 times bigger than 100. Astronomy deals with many big numbers, and so it is important for students to have a sense of what these numbers mean so that they can compare large distances and big luminosities. -ACTIVITY – WHICH STARS ARE THE BRIGHTEST IN THE SKY? This activity involves introducing the concepts of luminosity and apparent magnitude of stars. The constellation Canis Major was chosen as an example because Sirius has a much smaller luminosity but a much bigger apparent magnitude than the other stars in the constellation, which leads to the question what else effects the brightness of a star in the sky. -ACTIVITY – HOW DOES LOCATION AFFECT THE BRIGHTNESS OF STARS? This activity involves having the students test how distance effects apparent magnitude by having them shine flashlights at styrene balls at different distances.
