Fixed Stars More Than the Wandering Planets Used by Modern Astrologers
Ancients used the fixed stars more than the wandering planets used by modern astrologers. With improved technical abilities due to software enhancements, the fixed stars are beginning to make a return in present day astrology. The information contained in these pages is just a sampling of the stars and their meanings. It is designed to encourage you to look at the subject in a deeper level. When you blend the meaning of the fixed stars with the natal planets in your chart, it adds a great deal of texture to the understanding of your planet/star combination. I normally use a three degree orb of influence between stars and planets, but the commonly accepted orb is only one degree. A research project I did several years ago indicated that people felt the effects of the stars from this wider distance (which can amount to millions of miles). For example, if the planet Mercury in your natal chart is at 17° Gemini, then you will find on page four that item T is the star Rigel in the Orion constellation. Stars that are in the feet of a constellation are considered to be teacher stars in that they bring higher information down to earth to be used. Mercury represents communications, education, writing, and short trips. Combined, this could be a teacher of higher information, possibly a person who travels or writes as part of the teaching process. Again, this is a partial list of stars. Open clusters are an important tool for studying the chemical evolution of the Galactic disk. Metallicity estimates are available for about ten percent of the currently known open clusters. These metallicities are based on widely differing methods, however, which introduces unknown systematic effects. Aims. In a series of three papers, we investigate the current status of published metallicities for open clusters that were derived from a variety of photometric and spectroscopic methods. The current article focuses on spectroscopic methods. The aim is to compile a comprehensive set of clusters with the most reliable metallicities from high-resolution spectroscopic studies. This set of metallicities will be the basis for a calibration of metallicities from different methods. Methods. The literature was searched for [Fe/H] estimates of individual member stars of open clusters based on the analysis of high-resolution spectra. For comparison, we also compiled [Fe/H] estimates based on spectra with low and intermediate resolution. -

The focus will be on the relationship between cosmological ideas, observations, and computational techniques in both traditions. The Greek astronomy arose from Babylonian antecedents and was developed into a tradition characteristic of geometrical models, culminating in Ptolemy’s almagest. Greek philosophical thought about universe, such as by Plato and Aristotle played an important role in the development of astronomy. The Chinese were good observers of celestial phenomena. They independently developed an arithmetical tradition of astronomical computation. Its connection with cosmological ideas was not as tight as that in Greek astronomy. The two traditions had encountered through various ways in pre- modern times, but still maintained their own characters. Speakers in this symposium will use original texts to compare cosmos, measurement, and computation in the two astronomical traditions. Poorly-populated star clusters may have photometric and structural properties not much different from asterisms, to the point that, in some cases, widely-used databases present conflicting classifications. Aims. We investigate the nature of a sample of challenging targets that have been classified either as star clusters or asterisms in different studies. A few objects are studied for the first time. Methods. The analysis employs 2MASS photometry, field-star decontamination, to enhance the intrinsic colour–magnitude diagram (CMD) morphology, and colour-magnitude filters, for high contrast stellar radial density profiles (RDPs). Results. Based on properties derived from field-star decontaminated CMDs, and structural parameters from RDPs, we find that Pismis 12, IC 1434, Juchert 10, Ruprecht 30, NGC 3519, Herschel 1, Mayer 1, and Muzzio 1 are open clusters with ages within 5Myr−1.3 Gyr. Ruprecht 129, 130, 140, and 146 are borderline cases, being rather poorly-populated, with evolutionary sequences and RDPs suggesting star clusters. Dolidze 39, BH 79, and Ruprecht 103, have CMDs and RDPs typical of asterisms. Conclusions. When a low stellar population is associated with a dense field contamination and/or important differential reddening, only a thin line separates star clusters and asterisms. -
