Guilty Pleasure Editing: Mark Twain's Marginalia of 'Bad' Poetry
Wednesday, May 13 “Guilty Pleasure Editing: Mark Twain’s Marginalia of ‘Bad’ Poetry” Lisa McGunigal, Hope College “The exquisitely bad is as satisfying to the soul as the exquisitely good—only the mediocre is unendurable” Mark Twain, Notebook 39, 1896 Considered a satirist, travel writer, and lecturer, Twain was rarely presented as a poet or appreciator of poetry to the public during his life—and still today many people assume an antagonistic relationship between Twain and verse. In fact, Twain penned 120 poems (the bulk being of a humorous nature) and was an avid reader and performer of Robert Browning’s works. Additionally, Twain was clearly familiar with the popular poets of his era as he frequently parodied them within his novels. This lecture will discuss how Twain enjoyed not only reading bad poetry but also writing marginalia within his personal poetry collection—often consisting of snarky remarks criticizing the sentimental tone or rhyming structure— illustrating his active investment in altering and questioning the text as an enjoyable activity. In fact, Twain solicited editions of bad poetry from his friends and admirers with the expressed purpose to criticize them, and several of these copies are held today by the Elmira College Mark Twain Archive. Lisa McGunigal is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Hope College. Sketch drawn by Mark Twain in Her research examines the intersection of performance studies and nineteenth-century American 1890 that accompanied one of literary realism, focusing on how authors adopted and adapted strategies from performance sites the author’s poems in their novels to interrogate societal attitudes about race, class, and gender. -

AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES Few authors of note have seen so many and frank judg- ments of their work from the pens of their contemporaries as Stevenson saw. He was a ^persona grata ' with the whole world of letters, and some of his m,ost admiring critics were they of his own craft—poets, novelists, essayists. In the following pages the object in view has been to garner a sheaf of memories and criticisms written—before and after his death—for the most part by eminent contemporaries of the novelist, and interesting, apart from intrinsic worth, by reason of their writers. Mr. Henry James, in his ' Partial Portraits,' devotes a long and brilliant essay to Stevenson. Although written seven years prior to Stevenson's death, and thus before some of the most remarkable productions of his genius had appeared, there is but little in -i^^^ Mr. James's paper which would require modi- fication to-day. Himself the wielder of a literary style more elusive, more tricksy than Stevenson's, it is difficult to take single passages from his paper, the whole galaxy of thought and suggestion being so cleverly meshed about by the dainty frippery of his manner. Mr. James begins by regretting the 'extinction of the pleasant fashion of the literary portrait,' and while deciding that no individual can bring it back, he goes on to say It is sufficient to note, in passing, that if Mr. Stevenson had P 226 STEVENSONIANA presented himself in an age, or in a country, of portraiture, the painters would certainly each have had a turn at him. -

The American Claimant By Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) 1 EXPLANATORY The Colonel Mulberry Sellers here re-introduced to the public is the same person who appeared as Eschol Sellers in the first edition of the tale entitled "The Gilded Age," years ago, and as Beriah Sellers in the subsequent editions of the same book, and finally as Mulberry Sellers in the drama played afterward by John T. Raymond. The name was changed from Eschol to Beriah to accommodate an Eschol Sellers who rose up out of the vasty deeps of uncharted space and preferred his request--backed by threat of a libel suit--then went his way appeased, and came no more. In the play Beriah had to be dropped to satisfy another member of the race, and Mulberry was substituted in the hope that the objectors would be tired by that time and let it pass unchallenged. So far it has occupied the field in peace; therefore we chance it again, feeling reasonably safe, this time, under shelter of the statute of limitations. MARK TWAIN. It being the first attempt of the kind in fictitious literature, it may prove a failure, but it seemed worth the while of some dare-devil person to try it, and the author was in just the mood. Many a reader who wanted to read a tale through was not able to do it because of delays on account of the weather. -

The pain of the one is deceptive, while the pain of the other is omni- present immediately. Cruelty inflicted through laughter embodies the same principle; that is, the soft-pedaled laugh accompanied by the merest shadow of a sneer can do as much damage to the spirit as the raucous guffaws of an entire hooting, howling audience. From comedy man derives laughter, and within laughter is the element of cruelty; therefore, it will be necessary to discuss several aspects of comedy and laughter as they relate to and clarify cruelty. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate Mark Twain's awareness of and sensitive reaction to the cruelty which surrounded him throughout his lifetime, and to evaluate his literary use of cruelty for both comic and satiric effects. In general, comedy is an attempt to expose incongruity through laughter. The incongruity arises from that which is out of proportion, affected, pretentious, hypocritical, or pedantic. It may be the sham, folly, stupidity, cruelty, or vices of men. -

Kansas English, Vol. 98, No. 1 (2017) Mark Twain, the Dialogic Imagination, and the American Classroom Drew Clifton Colcher Abstract Mark Twain is often read as a provincial realist or naturalist whose works are disseminated in simplified versions as children’s stories or seen as humorous social criticism of the southern United States and its dialects. This article focuses on two of Twain’s novels—A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1889) and No. 44, the Mysterious Stranger (published posthumously with various titles)—in order to focus on the more modern, less provincial, novelistic aspects of Twain’s writing. The theories of Mikhail Bakhtin provide the background for a characterization of the novelistic nature of these works in an effort to re-focus Twain criticism away from realist or naturalist analysis and toward semiotic and structural considerations. This essay functions as an introductory-level presentation of Bakhtinian analysis and Twain criticism, as well as a reimagining of the role of Twain’s writings in the classroom, especially in light of recent controversies surrounding the language used in works like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Of paramount importance to this argument are the temporal, spatial, formal and thematic coordinates of the two books, and the assertion that they conform to Bakhtin’s conception of the novel and how it radically differs from other forms. The two women’s circumstances are remarkably similar, both of them familiar characters from the archives of New England regional fiction. Like Doris Owen, Alma Leighton grew up in one of those picturesque vacation destinations scattered someplace between Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine; like Doris, her mother kept a summer boarder who happened to be a young bohemian artist who had come with the purpose of making some sketches of the local scene; and like Doris, she became romantically involved with him. The difference between them is that, rather than staying at home in rural Maine, Alma travels to New York: though, like Doris, she ultimately rejects her bohemian suitor, she does so not to remain true to her roots in the country but to become a bohemian artist herself. It is Alma’s sketch for the cover of the novel’s new illustrated magazine, Every Other Week, that sets the aesthetic framework for the novel itself. -
