2016 “I Am Not Drinking Any $%&*#! Merlot ” 2016 “I AM NOT DRINKING ANY $%&*#! MERLOT ” It would seem to be a cold day in climate changèd Santa Cruz that a Merlot would pass the portals of Bonny Doon Vineyard. And yet… one must (as painful a proposition as this might be) remain open to the possibility that the The Cépage That Dare Not Speak Its Name might (gasp) be somehow not just bearable, but in fact, utterly delicious – soft, luscious and plush (not in a slatternly way), well structured, and even, dare I say, reasonably complex. You may well be looking at me sideways for saying it, but I will be drinking some $%&*#! Merlot. TASTING NOTES Good, deep ruby color, with a lovely dusty aroma VITAL STATISTICS of fraise de bois, licorice and gingerbread, with the Varietal Blend: 100% Merlot subtlest suggestion of garrigue de Provence; the ’16 vintage is a bit more substantial in weight and Appellation: Monterey County persistence than the ’15. Quite elegant on the palate Alcohol by Volume: 14.5% when first opened, the wine continues to build in TA: 5.3 g/L amplitude in the glass with more air. The Merlot has pH: 3.61 wonderful natural acidity (go figure!), medium tannins Production: 2,653 cases and great persistence. Serving Temperature: 58º F Cellaring: Drinkable upon release WINEMAKER NOTES (Sept. 2017), 3-5 years ageability There has been to some extent a sort of “ethnic cleansing” of Merlot in the Central Coast since the release of the film, “Sideways,” and it is, of course, REGION Monterey County WINEMAKER Randall Grahm tremendously ironic to be singing the praises of this substantially execrated grape. But beauty is found sometimes in the most unexpected places. Monterey County San Francisco FOOD PAIRING NOTES • • This would be an absolutely perfect wine with lamb and rosemary. Other ideas include pizza with Italian Bonny Doon Vineyard, sausage, grilled steak with a Merlot reduction, and Santa Cruz • Los Angeles grilled vegetables. 328 Ingalls Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060 | USA | Earth (831) 425-3625 | [email protected] | www.bonnydoonvineyard.com .

  • 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon
2019 CABERNET SAUVIGNON WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS Grapes for our Helderberg Cabernet Sauvignon are sourced from the renowned Helderberg mountainous area around Stellenbosch. With its big diurnal range and combination of unique soils such as decomposed dolomite granite, Table Mountain sandstone, and “koffieklip,” these mountains are considered prime terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon in South Africa, often said to contribute to the typical Cape garrigue or “fynbos” character. The fine tannin structure another characteristic of grapes sourced from the Helderberg area as a direct result of the colder climatic conditions and influences from the False Bay microclimate. After cold maceration, for optimal extraction of color, flavor, and tannins, the primary fermentation was started with selected native yeast. The wine was French oak matured for 12 months, of which 30% was in new barriques and 70% in older barriques. After maturation, the assemblage was done, using only the very best components to create a sleek, sophisticated Cabernet full of cassis flavor, yet with elegant, refreshing red fruit undertones. This wine is deliciously approachable now but will keep for a further three to five years. TASTING NOTES The nose is subtle yet utterly sophisticated with its compote of blueberries, mulberries, and blackberries, and hints of garrigue and mocha. Cassis, blackberries, and Cape fynbos dominate a dark, brooding mid-palate. Tannins are fine and grippy, creating structure and a certain nervosité with the vibrant lemony acidity. The wine lingers on the finish with notes of tarragon, marjoram, and dill. ANALYSIS Alc: 14.58 % RS: 3.1 g/L TA: 5.2 g/L pH: 3.81 Vineyard Brands | www.vineyardbrands.com | Birmingham, AL HEL4005.

European Red List of Habitats - Heathland Habitat Group F6.2 Eastern garrigue Summary This is open, low scrub dominated by sclerophyllous shrubs and sub-shrubs that is derived from degraded evergreen forest and maquis in the eastern Mediterranean including the Black Sea coast, and sustained by summer aridity, grazing and fire. The floristic composition is diverse and dependent on geographical position across the range, altitude and the particularity of human impact. Abandonment or intensive grazing are the main threats and no particular conservation measures are needed if traditional agriculture is maintained. Synthesis Relatively few quantitative data exist, but all information indicates that the habitat is Least Concern (LC), as declines in quality are relatively small and the habitat is widespread and increasing in area in the Eastern Mediterranean. • Garrigue” Is One of Those Perfect Wine Words — a Concise Term That Encompasses a Larger, and Very Beautiful, Idea
Domaine de la Terre Rouge TERRE ROUGE® AND EASTON WINES Tis minty red blend shows how wines can take on the flavors of plants that grow nearby Esther Mobley April 28, 2021 “Garrigue” is one of those perfect wine words — a concise term that encompasses a larger, and very beautiful, idea. Te word refers to the unique mix of vegetation that grows throughout part of southern France, near the Mediterranean Sea: fragrant, shrubby plants including lavender, thyme, rosemary, white flowers and juniper. It’s thought that the oils from the native flora make their way onto grapes in nearby vineyards, imbuing the resulting wines with the intoxicating fla- vors and aromas that recall those plants. Tat exact set of flora doesn’t appear in California, of course, but we do have our own version of garrigue. Ours is called chaparral, and it is ofen marked by the presence of scrub oak, sage, chamise and manzanita, among other plants. Although you can find chaparral-influenced wines a box 41, fiddletown, amador county, california usa 95629-0041 a telephone 209-245-3117 fax 209-245-5415 e-mail: terouge at volcano.net www.terrerougewines.com bw ca 5789 Domaine de la Terre Rouge TERRE ROUGE® AND EASTON WINES throughout the West Coast, one place where its imprint is particularly potent is in the Sierra Nevada. A delicious red wine from the Sierra foothills, in Amador County, pays homage to that. Domaine de la Terre Rouge’s Garrigue cuvee is a hearty, rich, structured red, but its overall effect is light- ened by its lilting fragrances and fresh flavors — its deep notes of blackberry and blueberry are countered by lightly herbal and intensely floral accents.

  • 2015 Merlot, Napa Valley
Keenan Napa Valley Spring Mountain District 2015 Merlot, Napa Valley TASTING NOTES Keenan Winery is located in Spring Mountain District, high in the Mayacamas mountain range above the town of Saint Helena. Eleven acres of Merlot vines have been planted in the rocky soils surrounding the winery, and it is these vines that produce some of the finest Merlot in Napa. The vineyards are situated above the dense layer of fog that creeps up the Napa Valley most evenings. Consequently the vines warm up earlier in the morning and stay warm through the night. The combination of warm temperatures, steep hillside vine rows and gravelly soils promotes more stress on the vines leading to increased intensity in the finished wine. The 2015 Keenan Merlot is composed of sixty eight percent Keenan Estate Merlot. Thirty two percent of the wine is Merlot fruit harvested from the Napa Carneros region. After hand har - vesting, the grapes were de-stemmed, then inoculated with Montrachet yeast. Fermentation ranged from ten to fourteen days. The 2015 Merlot has been aged in thirty-three percent new French and American oak barrels for eighteen months. The resulting wine shows intense aromas of black cherry, blackberry, and cassis. Complex nuances of cocoa and coffee bean emerge as the wine opens up. This is a “big” Merlot that will age for many years to come. Robert M. Parker, Jr.’s, The Wine Advocate , Issue #233 October, 2017 92 Points : “Medium garnet-purple in color and composed of 100% Merlot, the 2015 Merlot offers a plums, blackberries and dried flowers-scented nose with touches of mossy bark and garrigue.

  • Costières De Nimes
mary taylor wine www.mt.wine Costières de Nimes If you could bottle all the romance of summer in the south of France—the dazzling sunlight of a Cezanne painting and the warm sea breeze blowing through hillsides of lavender and thyme—you’d wind up with something a bit like Pierre Vidal’s beautiful expression of the Costières de Nimes appellation, a little-known sub-region at the southernmost edge of the Rhône valley with a history of wine production that dates back to the ancient Greeks. In 1998 the local grower’s syndicate succeeded in their request of the INAO to change the regional assignment of Costières de Nimes to the Southern Rhône from Languedoc. An untamed wild streak runs throughout all of Pierre’s wines, which practically sing of their place of origin. A typical blend of 60% Grenache with roughly equal parts of the Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes, it’s a fleshy but elegant wine, with an enveloping core of spicy dark berries and a firm grip of tannins. But beyond the fruit, it’s the expression of the soil that gives his wine its true identity. First, there’s a whiff of what the locals call “garrigue,” the combination of brushy herbs and botanicals that grow wild in the region by the side of the road. On the finish, the wine displays a deep-veined minerality, suggesting the flinty pebbles (called grés) that litter Pierre’s vineyards. The Platonic ideal of a “food wine,” this big-boned red is best appreciated with rich and hearty dishes.

A late bud-break in mid-April was followed by a warm May with rapid canopy growth. A quick, even bloom set a uniform crop. A cool June contributed to healthy berry growth. July and early August were warm, with occasional heat spikes. Canopies were managed to avoid sunburn and irrigation was micromanaged. Intense cluster thinning was required to control yields. HARVEST DATA Veraison tracked 2017 in Walla Walla and was slightly ahead in other regions of the state. • DE GOURGONNIER Les Baux De Provence Rouge
MAS DE GOURGONNIER Les Baux de Provence Rouge When people talk seriously about “natural” wines, Mas de Gourgonnier’s organic wines are at the top of the list. Since the eighteenth century, the Cartier family has worked the land in Provence, providing the local abbey with freshly grown fruits, vegetables and grain. They also were one of the first certified organic estates in Provence in the early 1970s. Here you’ll find a direct, unadulterated connection between the land and each bottle—flowering rosemary, wild sage and juniper plus the mountain ORGANIC WINERY freshness of regional “mistral” are all echoed in the estate’s wines. This is a vine-growing family that doesn’t have to “sell” a natural philosophy, however; it’s simply who they are, and who they’ve always been. WINERY: Mas de Gourgonnier WINEMAKERS: Luc Cartier and his daughter, Eve Cartier ESTABLISHED: 1950 REGION: FRANCE • Provence • Mouriès APPELLATION: Les Baux de Provence AOC BLEND: Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Carignan VINEYARDS: Vineyards are surrounded by pine trees and the natural scrub (garrigue) of the south. Soils are a mix of decomposed granite and limestone, very rocky and dry. The estate makes its own compost (from cow/sheep manure) and plows between vineyard rows; beneficial herbs are planted to control pests and moderate vine growth. AGE OF VINES: 20 to 30 years WINEMAKING: Hand-harvested. Grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed, and fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks. Aged in a combination of tank and older French barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. TASTING IMPRESSIONS: Aromas of Provençal garrigue; flavors of spiced cherries, plums, ginger and dark chocolate PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: Grilled steak, lamb, richly flavored cheeses NOTES: The wine is bottled in a “Normandy” or Calvados bottle, originally used by Luc Cartier’s father for the family’s first wines in the 1950s.
