We’re looking forward to seeing youth and juniors lighting up the course in Ottawa, Canada’s most iconic and beautiful cities. The next group of triathlon racing stars are amongst you, and Super League Triathlon was developed with the future in mind, giving youth and junior athlete stars the dreams, the platform to focus and pursue a life in sport that is rewarding, professional and diverse. Super League Triathlon youth and junior racing is the stepping stone to developing as a professional triathlete. It’s a pathway that can fulfill your athletic dream, and gives you the opportunity to race and test yourself within the same formats and courses as our professional athletes. Enjoy the experience, learn from the professionals as they prepare for their weekend of racing, and take away a desire and a drive to continue to set personal goals and ambitions that will propel you to the top of this sport when it is your time to shine. Super League Triathlon is the professional platform within the sport that will evolve to be the most important form of racing for many of you into the future. EVENT SCHEDULE Below is important information regarding the specific schedule for Youth and Junior athletes; ● Youth & Junior briefing session will take place on Friday 2 August 2019 at 10am at the Aberdeen Pavilion. ● Youth and Junior races will all take place on Saturday 3 August & Sunday 4 August 2019. ● Take note that this is a back to back event, please ensure you arrive at meeting points on time. ● All athletes must be present at allocated registrations on time - if late you will be automatically disqualified! PRE RACE INFORMATION ATHLETE ENTITLEMENTS - Drawstring bags - Athlete Kit (bib, helmet/bike sticker, tattoo sticker) - Swim cap - Finisher shirts ATHLETE RECOVERY AREA The post-race recovery area is an area for athletes to be sheltered with snacks, fruits, water and isotonic drinks where athletes can just grab and go during their 10 minutes break or to relax and unwind at the end of their race. The Athlete Recovery Area will be located right beside the finish line to allow the athletes to watch the race and cheer on their fellow triathletes from the finish line. Athlete bins will be allocated to each athlete for their belongings and race preparation kits. SLT will not be liable for any loss of items if they have been misplaced. ATHLETE BRIEFING Briefings are conducted by our Super League Technical Delegate right before the race start to familiarise athletes with the changes on course, format and safety procedures. If you have any questions on the course, process of the race, or rules and regulations, please approach Michael Thompson for any enquiries. TIMING CHIP All timing chips are to be worn on the left ankle at all times. Please be reminded to return timing chips at the finish line right after the race. Volunteers will assist with removal and collection of timing chips. Please do not discard the timing chips. BIKE MECHANIC Bike mechanic will be located in the Pavillion on race days. Please visit https://www.velofix.com/ and contact them directly if you require bike services before Friday, 2nd August on race week. 4. RACE FORMATS SLOT DRAW The slot draw will take place on Friday 2 August by Joe Kubizniak, Super League Triathlon Athlete Services Manager and Michael Thompson, Super League Triathlon Technical Director. The draw will determine the starting positions on the swim pontoon. This will be communicated to athletes before the start of the race. FORMATS || DAY 1 - THE ENDURO THE ENDURO 200m swim - 4km bike - 1.6km run (x2) The ENDURO is the speed in all disciplines to remain in the racing, and the ENDURance to hold and win the race itself. All athletes will start at the same time, with the girls race starting at 11:00 and the boys ace starting at 12:30pm Saturday, 3rd August 2019. Athletes will complete 1 lap of swim, 4 laps of bike and 1 lap of the run twice without any break before completing the race. -This will be an elimination race. -If an athlete doesn’t enter transition after the second swim before the leading athlete completes their first lap of the second bike then they will be eliminated from the race. -If an athlete is lapped whilst on the bike course they will be notified by an official and will be eliminated from the race. If this occurs athletes must keep to their left so as not to interfere with other athletes on the course. Two exit points on the course will allow for eliminated athletes to leave the course quickly and safely. -If an athlete is lapped on the run course whilst completing their run, they will be allowed to continue and finish the race. If this does occur athletes must keep to their left so as not to interfere with other athletes on the course. FORMATS || DAY 2 - THE ELIMINATOR THE ELIMINATOR 2 Stages of : 200m swim - 4km bike - 1.6km run Athletes boasting resilience, stamina, and velocity will conquer in The Eliminator’s pressure-cooker race format where field position proves key. In the Eliminator, Triathlons traditional format of swim-bike-run is cut down into two furious stages of sharp, vigorous repetitions. Athletes need to hold their ground as each Stage can abruptly evict their ambitious competitors. STAGE 1 1. Mass start with all athletes 2. Complete one 200m Swim - 4km Bike - 1.6km Run 3. 10 minute break will commence as stage winner crosses the finish Only the top 15 finishers will proceed to Stage 2, all other Athletes will be eliminated. STAGE 2 1. Mass start will all athletes 2. Complete one 200m Swim - 4km Bike - 1.6km Run 3. Race Finish - First athlete across the line wins 5. RULES HIGHLIGHTS Super League Triathlon is running under ITU Rules with some Super League Triathlon amendments. Here are some key rules to note: ● Penalties occurred on the bike course will be issued by the Technical Officials during the event and will be verbally communicated ● All gears and equipment must be UCI approved ● This is a draft legal race, therefore aero bars or clip-ons are not permitted ● Disc wheels are not permitted ● Only road bikes are permitted, TT bikes are NOT permitted ● Helmets must be fastened at all times in the transition area ● Wetsuits will be mandatory when water temperature is below 15.9 degrees ● You must mount and dismount the bike at the mount and dismount lines located at either end of transition ● More detailed rules are available in the rules and regulation section of this handbook 6. THE COURSE || ENDURO & ELIMINATOR 7. ATHLETE CHECKLIST Below is a checklist of items that may require your attention and the key items to bring with you to the event site. THINGS TO DO • Familiarise yourself with the rules, course and race format. • Ensure that your Emergency Contact person will be contactable on race day. • Ensure you have all the necessary equipment to participate in the race. • Familiarise yourself with the event schedule - especially transition set-up times (more information on this during the athlete briefing). • Ensure you have accommodation and travel organised so you arrive no later than Friday 2nd August 2019. If you are unsure of this information please check with your parent’s, manager or coach. CODE OF CONDUCT General Conduct Triathlon involves many athletes and race tactics are part of the interaction between athletes. Athletes will: a) Comply with the Super League Race Rules & Regulations b) Be able to compete only when athletes are in excellent physical condition. Health and welfare is of paramount importance. By starting in a race, the athletes declare they are in good health and in appropriate physical condition to complete the race; c) Practice good sportsmanship at all times; d) Be responsible for their own safety and the safety of others; e) Know, understand and follow the Rules and Regulations; f) Obey traffic regulations and instructions from Technical Officials; g) Treat officials, volunteers, and spectators with respect and courtesy; h) Compete without receiving assistance other than from event personnel and officials; i) Not dispose of rubbish or equipment around the course except at clearly identified places, such as aid stations or rubbish disposal points.
