The Functional Categories and Phrase Structure of Sason Arabic THE FUNCTIONAL CATEGORIES AND PHRASE STRUCTURE OF SASON ARABIC FARUK AKKUŞ BOĞAZİÇİ UNIVERSITY 2014 THE FUNCTIONAL CATEGORIES AND PHRASE STRUCTURE OF SASON ARABIC Thesis submitted to the Institute for Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Linguistics by Faruk Akkuş Boğaziçi University 2014 The Functional Categories and Phrase Structure of Sason Arabic The thesis of Faruk Akkuş has been approved by: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Balkız Öztürk _____________ (Thesis Advisor) Prof. Dr. Elabbas Benmamoun _____________ Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meltem Kelepir _____________ June 2014 Thesis Abstract Faruk Akkuş, “The Functional Categories and Phrase Structure of Sason Arabic” The study aims to investigate primarily the functional categories and the phrase structure of Sason Arabic. Adopting the main premises of the Minimalist Program, I analyze the syntactic representations of functional projections, relying on the morphological properties of the language. Sason Arabic displays different properties across sentence types, hence following Akkuş and Benmamoun (2014) I argue that Sason Arabic exhibits both the head initial and head final properties. In this study, the initial step was to examine the tense projection with the aim of explaining the morpho-syntactic properties of elements that can occupy it. The description of tense elements and the verbal morphology led to the analysis of the syntax of complex tense in SA. Based on the discussion of several instances of tense syncretism, mainly following Stowell 1996, 2005, Giorgi and Pianesi 1997, I argued for a bi-layeral TP analysis, where the lower layer projects two separate Ts. The main motivations for this analysis came from the past particle kə-, exclusive to SA, and the different function of kwn from other Arabic varieties. In addition, I discussed the representation of sentential negation in Sason Arabic and concluded that the order of negation relative to tense seems to be different in copular and non-copular sentences (Akkuş and Benmamoun 2014). The investigation shed light on the influence of language contact on the clause structure of Sason Arabic, that is, the head-directionality and the position of negation relative to tense. I also suggested that the pronominal element which shows up in positive and negative sentences be best treated as Pron in the sense of Doron (1983, 1986) due to its distributional and morphophonological properties. Finally, I examined possible word-order variations in the Sason Arabic depending on the information structure of the sentence and discussed their syntactic derivations within the phrase structure that I proposed in this study. This examination included the position of subjects and the derivation of CLLDed elements. iii Tez Özeti Faruk Akkuş, “Sason Arapçası’ının İşlevsel Kümeleri ve Öbek Yapısı” Bu çalışmanın amacı temel olarak Sason Arapçası’nın işlevsel kümelerini ve öbek yapısını incelemektir. Bu tartışma öznelerin pozisyonlarını ve Sola Kaydırılan Biçimcesel unsurları da içermiştir. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS While fully aware that words will fall short, I would like to express my deepest gratitude my thesis advisor and mentor Balkız Öztürk. She assisted me with every step of this study with patience. She taught me how to see where my ideas fit together (or didn’t) and tease out my own hidden assumptions. More importantly, she provided the encouragement and the stimulus to keep going when things got sticky. It was often her who suggested me directions to explore when it looked like my assumptions came to a dead end. From her I learned more than I can ever adequately thank her. I would like to thank my teachers over the course of my years with linguistics for inspiration and guidance, most of all for teaching me how to think linguistics from many different angles. For all they have done, great thanks to Meltem Kelepir, Sumru Özsoy, Aslı Göksel, Eser Taylan, and Markus Pöchtrager. My papers for the classes of Sumru Özsoy and Aslı Göksel ended up constituting crucial aspects of the thesis. I am indebted to Meltem Kelepir for her detailed feedback and challenging questions on my studies. Abbas Benmamoun, since the very first time I contacted him, has always been very generous with his time, comments, and support, both through electronic communication and in face-to-face conversations at Arabic Linguistics Symposium meetings. I thank him for this, for accepting to be in my defense committee, as well as for his foundational work in Arabic. I thank my classmates, Seda, Büşra, Emre, Dariya, Nil, Betül, Ömer, Songül for their friendship. I also express special thanks to my friend Mehmet Köse and my brothers for their constant support, motivation and my family for always being there. This project has been funded by the TÜBİTAK-BİDEB 2210 grant, which is hereby gratefully acknowledged. It made the research possible. v CONTENTS CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION ................................................................................................... 1 1.1. Türk Dilleri Araştırmaları, 21.1 (2011): 83-94 Turkish and Kurdish influences the Arabic Dialects of Anatolia Otto Jastrow* (Tallinn) Özet: Anadolu Arapçası, ayrı lehçeler (Sprachinseln) biçiminde ortaya çıkar. Because there is no Muslim state authority to consult, local imams and Islamic leaders can resort to a community-led practice known as khulʿ (divorce initiated by the woman) to dissolve an Islamic marriage (nikāḥ) that is not recognized by civil authorities. In this article, which is the culmination of three years of fieldwork in Germany, I analyze and interpret the views and practices of two groups of religious actors - conservatives and pragmatists - towards khulʿ in cases of nikāḥ. I find that conservatives only permit a woman to divorce through khulʿ with her husband’s consent, whereas pragmatists use Muslim minority jurisprudence (fiqh al-aqalliyyāt al-Muslima) to argue that

The scope is then gradually widened. First, it is shown how more historically oriented research can provide insight into the social organization of the region in question, and in particular, into the nature of ethnic identity. Contrary to some common assumptions, ethnicity seems to have been de- emphasized in the later Ottoman period, when the people of this periphery were already well integrated into the state system. Second, again drawing on recent publications by other scholars, the paper reviews the question of ethnicity in Anatolia generally. The Turkish republic has often been criticized for its failure to recognize ethnic groups, and is likely to come under increasing pressure to recognize the rights of ‘cultural minorities’, e.g. in negotiations over EU entry. Within anthropology, however, there is no consensus as to how recognition of group diversity should be translated into political practice. Key terms such as ‘culture’ and ‘ethnicity’ have become unstable. According to Barth’s influential discussion (1969), ethnicity classifies a person ‘in terms of his basic, most general identity’.

THE HISTORY OF THE FUTURE: MORPHOPHONOLOGY, SYNTAX, AND GRAMMATICALIZATION by LAMAR ASHLEY GRAHAM (Under the Direction of L. Chadwick Howe) ABSTRACT The appearance of new verbal paradigms in the Romance languages – namely, the synthetic future indicative and conditional paradigms – has been one of the hallmark studies within the field of grammaticalization. Already existing in Latin was a synthetic future indicative paradigm, with a full complement of endings. Many researchers (Garey 1955; Hopper and Traugott 2003; Slobbe 2004; among others) have agreed that the infinitive + HABĒRE construction was the genesis of Romance future paradigms, obviating and completely replacing the disfavored Latin synthetic future. However, even after Latin evolved into Spanish, there still existed a duality between a periphrastic, analytic future and a paradigmatic, synthetic future. Said duality implied several syntactic and morphophonological characteristics of Old and Classical Spanish, some of which are no longer extant in the modern language. Through an empirical study, employing variable rules analyses, of Old and Classical Spanish texts, it is shown that the synthetic and analytic future and conditional were not always fully complementary of another, as the synthetic began to be used in contexts customarily reserved for the analytic construction. Within this work it will be shown how morphophonological and syntactic properties necessitated the existence of the analytic construction, especially the status of the auxiliary-turned-affix-turned- inflectional ending haber. Also of interest will be the manner in which the future and conditional paradigms derived syntactically in Old and Classical Spanish, with special attention lent to the role of cliticization principles in their structure.

Main Points Word-formation processes: Are specific techniques used by language users to add new vocabulary items to their language. These processes are similar between languages, still some languages might have other processes/resources than others. In this lecture we are going to discuss four of these processes, namely, derivation, reduplication and folk etymology. 1. What is derivation? When small bits, affixes, are added to a word. There are three types. Prefixes:added before the word, e.g. Mis-, un-, pre- Suffixes:added after the word, e.g.-less, -full, -ish, -ness (foolishness hence has two suffixes) Infixes:added in the middle of the word,e.g. -bloody-, -goddam- جامعة المنيا، كلية اﻷلسن ,Mini University, Faculty of Alsun علم الصرف ، الفرقة الثانية، Morphology , Second Year ,2020 0202 المحاضر د.إيمان العيسوى Instructor Dr Eman Elesawy 2. What is Reduplication: Reduplication is sometimes called rhyming compounds (subtype of compounds) These words are compounded from two rhyming words. Examples: lovey-dovey chiller-killer There are words that are formally very similar to rhyming compounds, but are not quite compounds in English because the second element is not really a word--it is just a nonsense item added to a root word to form a rhyme.

Paradigmatic Uniformity and Contrast∗ Michael Kenstowicz Massachusetts Institute of Technology This paper reviews several cases where either the grammar strives to maintain the same output shape for pairs of inflected words that the regular phonology should otherwise drive apart (paradigmatic uniformity) or where the grammar strives to keep apart pairs of inflected words that the regular phonology threatens to merge (paradigmatic contrast). 1. Introduction The general research question which this paper addresses is the proper treatment of cases of opacity in which the triggering or blocking context for a phonological process is found in a paradigmatically related word. Chomsky & Halle's (1968) discussion of the minimal pair comp[´]nsation vs. cond[E]nsation is a classic example of the problem. In general, the contrast between a full vowel vs. schwa is predictable in English as a function of stress; but comp[´]nsation vs. ∗ An initial version of this paper was read at the Harvard-MIT Phonology 2000 Conference (May 1999); a later version was delivered at the 3èmes Journées Internationales du GDR Phonologie, University of Nantes (June 2001). I thank the editors as well as François Dell and Donca Steriade for helpful comments. 2 cond[E]nsation have the same σ` σ ´σ σ stress contour and thus raise the question whether English schwa is phonemic after all. SPE's insight was that the morphological bases from which these words are derived provide a solution to the problem: comp[´]nsate has a schwa while cond[E@]nse has a full stressed vowel. Chomsky and Halle's suggestion is that such paradigmatic relations among words can be described by embedding the derivation of one inside the derivation of the other.

As soon as the Ilısu dam project is completed most of the region along with its numerous ancient relics will be left under the water. Therefore some precautions should be taken such as transferring movable historical assets and investigating unmovable ones using archaeometry which generally prefers chemical, thermal, mineralogical, spectroscopic, optical and microscopic investigation that would provide significant information about the findings uncovered from archaeological excavations. The comprehensive and detailed knowledge obtained by archaeometry, which gathers engineering, natural and social sciences, creates a convenient date base for studying historical artifacts. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the importance of Hasankeyf in elucidating the history of Upper Mesopotamia in the context of archaeometry and the cultural heritage. Keywords: Cultural Heritage, Archaeometry, Hasankeyf (Turkey). Hasankeyf: Tarihi Yansıtan Kültürel Bir Miras (Arkeometrik Yaklaşım)
