FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury This One, with Gratitude, Is for DON CONGDON
FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury This one, with gratitude, is for DON CONGDON. FAHRENHEIT 451: The temperature at which book-paper catches fire and burns PART I: THE HEARTH AND THE SALAMANDER IT WAS A PLEASURE TO BURN. IT was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed. With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world, the blood pounded in his head, and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history. With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his stolid head, and his eyes all orange flame with the thought of what came next, he flicked the igniter and the house jumped up in a gorging fire that burned the evening sky red and yellow and black. He strode in a swarm of fireflies. He wanted above all, like the old joke, to shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace, while the flapping pigeon- winged books died on the porch and lawn of the house. While the books went up in sparkling whirls and blew away on a wind turned dark with burning. Montag grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame. He knew that when he returned to the firehouse, he might wink at himself, a minstrel man, Does% burntcorked, in the mirror. Later, going to sleep, he would feel the fiery smile still gripped by his Montag% face muscles, in the dark. -
NTOZAKE SHANGE, JAMILA WOODS, and NITTY SCOTT by Rachel O
THEORIZING BLACK WOMANHOOD IN ART: NTOZAKE SHANGE, JAMILA WOODS, AND NITTY SCOTT by Rachel O. Smith A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Purdue University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of English West Lafayette, Indiana May 2020 THE PURDUE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL STATEMENT OF COMMITTEE APPROVAL Dr. Marlo David, Chair Department of English Dr. Aparajita Sagar Department of English Dr. Paul Ryan Schneider Department of English Approved by: Dr. Dorsey Armstrong 2 This thesis is dedicated to my mother, Carol Jirik, who may not always understand why I do this work, but who supports me and loves me unconditionally anyway. 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to first thank Dr. Marlo David for her guidance and validation throughout this process. Her feedback has pushed me to investigate these ideas with more clarity and direction than I initially thought possible, and her mentorship throughout this first step in my graduate career has been invaluable. I would also like to thank the other members of my committee, Dr. Aparajita Sagar and Dr. Ryan Schneider, for helping me polish this piece of writing and for supporting me throughout this two-year program as I prepared to write this by participating in their seminars and working with them to prepare conference materials. Without these three individuals I would not have the confidence that I now have to continue on in my academic career. Additionally, I would like to thank my friends in the English Department at Purdue University and my friends back home in Minnesota who listened to my jumbled thoughts about popular culture and Black womanhood and asked me challenging questions that helped me to shape the argument that appears in this document. -

Dolemite Is My Name
DOLEMITE IS MY NAME Written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski FINAL IN THE BLACK We hear Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" playing softly. VOICE I ain't lying. People love me. INT. DOLPHIN'S - DAY CU of a beat-up record from the 1950s. On the paper cover is a VERY YOUNG Rudy, in a tuxedo. It says "Rudy Moore - BUGGY RIDE" RUDY You play this, folks gonna start hoppin' and squirmin', just like back in the day. A hand lifts the record up to the face of RUDY RAY MOORE, late '40s, black, sweet, determined. RUDY When I sang this on stage, I swear to God, people fainted! Ambulance man was picking them off the floor! When I had a gig, the promoter would warn the hospital: "Rudy's on tonight -- you're gonna be carrying bodies out of the motherfucking club!" We see that we are in a RADIO BOOTH. A sign blinks "On The Air." The DJ, ROJ, frowns at the record. ROJ "Buggy Ride"? RUDY Wasn't no small-time shit. ROJ GodDAMN, Rudy! That record's 1000 years old! I've got Marvin Gaye singin' "Let's Get It On"! I can't be playin' no "Buggy Ride." (beat) Look, I have 60 seconds. I have to cue the next tune. Hm! Rudy bites his lip and walks away. Roj tries to go back to his job. He reaches for a Sly Stone single -- when Rudy suddenly bounds back up. RUDY How about "Step It Up and Go"? That's a real catchy rhythm-and-blues number. -

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
y f !, 2.(T I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings MAYA ANGELOU Level 6 Retold by Jacqueline Kehl Series Editors: Andy Hopkins and Jocelyn Potter Contents page Introduction V Chapter 1 Growing Up Black 1 Chapter 2 The Store 2 Chapter 3 Life in Stamps 9 Chapter 4 M omma 13 Chapter 5 A New Family 19 Chapter 6 Mr. Freeman 27 Chapter 7 Return to Stamps 38 Chapter 8 Two Women 40 Chapter 9 Friends 49 Chapter 10 Graduation 58 Chapter 11 California 63 Chapter 12 Education 71 Chapter 13 A Vacation 75 Chapter 14 San Francisco 87 Chapter 15 Maturity 93 Activities 100 / Introduction In Stamps, the segregation was so complete that most Black children didn’t really; absolutely know what whites looked like. We knew only that they were different, to be feared, and in that fear was included the hostility of the powerless against the powerful, the poor against the rich, the worker against the employer; and the poorly dressed against the well dressed. This is Stamps, a small town in Arkansas, in the United States, in the 1930s. The population is almost evenly divided between black and white and totally divided by where and how they live. As Maya Angelou says, there is very little contact between the two races. Their houses are in different parts of town and they go to different schools, colleges, stores, and places of entertainment. When they travel, they sit in separate parts of buses and trains. After the American Civil War (1861—65), slavery was ended in the defeated Southern states, and many changes were made by the national government to give black people more rights. -
Skain's Domain (Episode 2) 3 30 202
Skain's Domain - Episode 2 Skain's Domain Episode 2 – March 30, 2020 0:00:00 Moderator: Wynton, are you ready? 0:00:01 Wynton Marsalis: I'm ready. 0:00:02 Moderator: Okay. With that, I'll turn it over to you. 0:00:05 WM: Alright, I wanna welcome y'all to our second Skain's Domain where we discuss issues, significant and trivial, with the same type of feeling. We're gonna talk tonight of something called "Jazz Stories". I grew up... My father's a jazz musician and I would always notice, the mysterious thing about them was how they would listen to recordings and know who was playing by their sound. And they would start talking about, "Oh man, that must be Frog." "No man, that's not Frog, that's Jug." And everybody always had a hip nickname and they would start questioning who was who, and then when the disk jockey would come on and say, "That was Gene Ammons." "I knew that was Jug." But I also noticed that they used stories to teach you lessons. There were always stories about fantastic musicians, things that they did, occurrences. They taught you history, they taught you how to feel about life. 0:00:51 WM: And later when I was older, we would have fantastic hangs at the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival, Vienne Jazz Festival. All the musicians of all the generations would be together and we could sit up and listen to musicians tell stories. I'll never forget one night when I was 18, I was with Art Blakey on a tour of Europe, and all of the greatest drummers in the world were there playing some type of festival. -
