washington,wa s h i n g t o n , dcd c KING OF KINGS Epiphany 2019 Matthew 2:1-12 Dan Claire The story of the Wise Men is the sequel to Matthew’s account of the birth of Jesus, and it begins with two important details that weren’t mentioned in chapter one: namely, the place and the time. Matthew writes: “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem.” (2:1) The place and the time of a story usually aren’t all that exciting, but if it’s a good story, these details are often essential for understanding what the story is all about. That’s certainly the case in Matthew’s story. The place where Jesus was born, Matthew tells us, was Bethlehem–not Jerusalem. Isn’t it odd that Matthew didn’t mention this earlier, when he told the story of Jesus' birth? Matthew was saving this detail until now, until the story of the Wise Men. Most people would have expected the new king to be born in the royal palace in Jerusalem, ~5 miles to the north, and that’s exactly where the Wise Men looked first. They arrived and asked, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (2:2) But Jesus wasn’t there. He was in the City of David, in Bethlehem and not in Jerusalem. -

With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his stolid head, and his eyes all orange flame with the thought of what came next, he flicked the igniter and the house jumped up in a gorging fire that burned the evening sky red and yellow and black. He strode in a swarm of fireflies. He wanted above all, like the old joke, to shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace, while the flapping pigeon- winged books died on the porch and lawn of the house. While the books went up in sparkling whirls and blew away on a wind turned dark with burning. Montag grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame. He knew that when he returned to the firehouse, he might wink at himself, a minstrel man, Does% burntcorked, in the mirror. Later, going to sleep, he would feel the fiery smile still gripped by his Montag% face muscles, in the dark. -

I His Serene Highness Prince Sithiporn Kridakara ( · His Serene Highness Prince Sithiporn Kridakara passed away on 22 June 1971. Prince Sithiporn was born on 11 April 1883, the fourth son of His Royal Highness Prince Krisdapiniharn, Krom Phra Nares Voraridb. He was thus a grandson of King Mongkut and a nephew of King Chulalongkorn. He was educated at Harrow and the City and Guild's Technical College, now a part of London University. Returning to Siam in 1901, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as one of the Secretaries to the General Adviser. Four years later, he was transferred to the Ministry of Finance's Opium Department of which he rose to become Director-General. He resigned in 1921 to live in the country and to start an experi mental farm as Bangberd, 400 kilometres south of Bangkok. There, he experimented with may new crops hitherto unknown to Siam. To UBITUAHIES stimuiate new ways of thinking about agriculture, he co-founded a monthly agricultural journal called Kasikorn or The Fanner in 1927. In 1931, he was recalled to become Director-General of the Agricultural Inspection Department. Prince Sithiporn at once established three agricultural experimental stations in the North, the Northeast and the South. These stations were later expanded to become agricultural schools, demonstrations farms and extension agencies. This second period of government service was terminated by the 1932 Revolution which brought in its train more than 0 a decade of great misfortune for Prince Sithiporn. In 1944 Prince Sithiporn went back to Bangberd to rehabilitate hi s farm. He was recalled to be Minister of Agriculture in the Kbuang Abhaiwong cabinet of 1947-1948. -

ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: ROYAL SUBJECTS, IMPERIAL CITIZENS: THE MAKING OF BRITISH IMPERIAL CULTURE, 1860- 1901 Charles Vincent Reed, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Dissertation directed by: Professor Richard Price Department of History ABSTRACT: The dissertation explores the development of global identities in the nineteenth-century British Empire through one particular device of colonial rule – the royal tour. Colonial officials and administrators sought to encourage loyalty and obedience on part of Queen Victoria’s subjects around the world through imperial spectacle and personal interaction with the queen’s children and grandchildren. The royal tour, I argue, created cultural spaces that both settlers of European descent and colonial people of color used to claim the rights and responsibilities of imperial citizenship. The dissertation, then, examines how the royal tours were imagined and used by different historical actors in Britain, southern Africa, New Zealand, and South Asia. My work builds on a growing historical literature about “imperial networks” and the cultures of empire. In particular, it aims to understand the British world as a complex field of cultural encounters, exchanges, and borrowings rather than a collection of unitary paths between Great Britain and its colonies. With the release of the new movie, The King's Speech, starring Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush, it is most timely to highlight the plight of those who stutter and the resources that are available to them. This incredibly complex disorder affects more than three million people in this country alone. The movie deals solely with King George VI's debilitating stutter and his relationship with Lionel Logue, the Australian speech therapist retained to help him overcome his disability. "I am delighted that The King's Speech will introduce a new generation of young people to the inspiring story of King George VI," noted Jane Fraser, president of The Stuttering Foundation. "He continues to be a powerful role model whose broadcasts of hope kept the spirits of the British people alive during the dark days of World War II. He even inspired my father, Malcolm Fraser, who founded The Stuttering Foundation." Malcolm Fraser felt the same dread of speaking in public that the King experienced in the 1940s. Fraser, a successful businessman, went on to establish and endow the 64‐year‐old nonprofit in 1947. This collection includes a medal bearing the portrait of the dashing Edward VIII, as well as two colonial coins from British West Africa. The West Africa coins do not show his portrait because he abdicated too soon for the dies to be used in striking. On 20 January, 1936, Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, of the House of Windsor, succeeded his father, George V, as King of Great Britain and the Dominions of the British Empire. Edward VIII would abdicate in December of the same year, in order to marry the love of his life, the twice-divorced American arriviste Wallis Simpson. His 326-day reign is among the shortest in the long annals of British history. When he was Prince of Wales, Edward became arguably the world’s first modern international celebrity. Exploits of the royal family have always been the subject of great popular interest, but Edward took to the role like none of his predecessors ever had. He was handsome, suave, fashionable, and unlike his stolid and old-fashioned father, he seemed to emulate the ebullient spirit of the post-war Jazz Age. In short, he had it all. That he would surrender so precious a prize as the British throne to marry a commoner—an American commoner, at that, and one with a somewhat notorious past—was widely viewed as the ultimate romantic gesture: a declaration of love ne plus ultra. In fact, there is more to this tale than meets the eye. Abdication was not a great sacrifice for Edward VIII. As much as he loathed “princing,” as he called it, when he’d been Prince of Wales, he hated being king even more.
