“To Everyone, Homeland is Kashmir”: Cultural Conceptions of Migration, Wellbeing, Adulthood and Future among Young Afghans in Europe Khadija Abbasi, Alessandro Monsutti Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva Working Paper – Becoming Adult: conceptions of futures and wellbeing among migrant young people in the UK I have relatives and friends in Europe. They send money back to their families. They have jobs and documents. I saw their photos in Europe and they looked good. I knew that if I go there, I could work and have a good job and send money back to my family. I did not come to the United Kingdom to enjoy the landscape. I only knew it is where I can have a good job. I did not come here for leisure. “To everyone, homeland is Kashmir.” Afghan youth: new destinations, new aspirations In the opening quote, Abdullah, a young Afghan under immigration control in the United Kingdom, uses a proverb in Pashto to express his mixed feeling about migration: Har châta khpal watan kashmir To everyone, homeland is Kashmir.” In South Asia and beyond, the“ ,(هر چاته خپل وطن کشمیر دی) de famed valley has the reputation to be the most beautiful place in the world. Although mobility in its various forms is part of the Afghan social and cultural landscape, past and present, Abdullah metaphorically expresses the idea that he would not have left his country of origin unless forced by some compelling reasons. Abdullah’s brief statement weaves together themes explored in this paper. It expresses the feeling that there is no future in the homeland, how dear it might be.

  • “The Qur'an and the Modern Self: a Heterotopia,”
“The Qur’an and the Modern Self: A Heterotopia,” Social Research: An International Quarterly, Volume 85, No. 3, Fall 2018, pp. 557-572. No book has been so vilified in the Christian West, while at the same time remaining so almost completely unread, as the Qur’an. Those who did at least delve into it put it to numerous and contradictory purposes. Churchmen such as Martin Luther cited it as the ultimate heresy. Enlightenment intellectuals such as Thomas Jefferson valued it for its post-pagan monotheism. In the early decades of the twenty-first century it has been libeled as a font of terrorism. Yet it is the scripture of a quarter of humankind. Prominent writers have often engaged with it as a staccato “heterotopia,” one continually constructed and forgotten, since for all its importance, it has never been part of the literary canon. We have come to the book by diverse and winding pathways. Author Al Young, whom Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor appointed California’s poet laureate, spoke of the profound influence on his craft of the music of jazz legend Yusef Lateef, whose performances he used to attend while growing up in Detroit. He wrote, “That he was Muslim intrigued us. Eventually, to understand a little about where Yusef was coming from, I read British Muslim Marmaduke Pickthall’s translation of the Qur’an: The Glorious Koran. And I was moved” (Young 2013). Between the utopia and the dystopia Michel Foucault positioned the heterotopia, a place in- between, juxtaposed to but not part of the world. He mentioned as examples “the garden, brothel, rest home, festival, magic carpet, Muslim baths” and even “Persian gardens” and “the cemetery” (Johnson 2013).

This policy aims at the strengthening and development of the state system and the protection of the national interests of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan builds its foreign policy on the principle of respect to the international legal standards and norms, the state sovereignty and territorial integrity and the principles of nonintervention into the internal affairs. The foreign policy of Azerbaijan, adhering to these principles and speaking on behalf of the national interests targets such urgent issues as the risks and challenges to the national security and territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of the republic and the prevention of the intervention of the Republic of Armenia. The major priorities of the foreign policy of Azerbaijan are the establishment of the regional peace and stability, the implementation of large transport and cooperation projects. The attraction of the foreign capital to the implementation of different projects on the development of the country's economics for more effective protection of the national interests plays a great role in the foreign policy of Azerbaijan in the present-day world.

IN BRIEF Iran is among the world's top 10 most resource-rich countries. While primarily known for its hydrocarbons, the country is also home to some 68 minerals together reportedly worth $700 billion, with more than 37bnt (billion tonnes) of proven reserves and 57bnt of potential reserves, which include considerable deposits in coal, iron ore, copper, lead, zinc, chromium, barite, uranium and gold. The Sarcheshmeh mine in Iran holds the second's largest copper deposits in Asia, accounting for 25.3% of Asian reserves and around 6% of global reserves. SUMMARY Mining currently only plays a minor role in the Iranian economy; however, the Iranian leadership is actively seeking to promote growth in its mining sector to reduce its dependency on oil. According to the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization (IMIDRO), it has, through subsidiary companies, invested more than $10 billion in upstream and downstream mining projects since its establishment in 2001, and currently has $9 billion invested in 29 projects, including steel, aluminium, rare earth elements, copper and gold mines. At the Iran-EU Conference on Trade & Investment, held on 23-24 July 2015 in Vienna, Austria, Mehdi Karbasian, Deputy Minister and Chairman of IMIDRO, said Iran will require a further $20 billion in investment for its mining sector by 2025. He invited foreign and private sector investment, introducing the incentives already introduced in Iran, and expressing IMIDRO's support for foreign investment.

  • The Socioeconomics of State Formation in Medieval Afghanistan
The Socioeconomics of State Formation in Medieval Afghanistan George Fiske Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 George Fiske All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Socioeconomics of State Formation in Medieval Afghanistan George Fiske This study examines the socioeconomics of state formation in medieval Afghanistan in historical and historiographic terms. It outlines the thousand year history of Ghaznavid historiography by treating primary and secondary sources as a continuum of perspectives, demonstrating the persistent problems of dynastic and political thinking across periods and cultures. It conceptualizes the geography of Ghaznavid origins by framing their rise within specific landscapes and histories of state formation, favoring time over space as much as possible and reintegrating their experience with the general histories of Iran, Central Asia, and India. Once the grand narrative is illustrated, the scope narrows to the dual process of monetization and urbanization in Samanid territory in order to approach Ghaznavid obstacles to state formation. The socioeconomic narrative then shifts to political and military specifics to demythologize the rise of the Ghaznavids in terms of the framing contexts described in the previous chapters. Finally, the study specifies the exact combination of culture and history which the Ghaznavids exemplified to show their particular and universal character and suggest future paths for research. The Socioeconomics of State Formation in Medieval Afghanistan I. General Introduction II. Perspectives on the Ghaznavid Age History of the literature Entrance into western European discourse Reevaluations of the last century Historiographic rethinking Synopsis III.
