  • A Brief History of the Hawaiian People
0 A BRIEF HISTORY OP 'Ill& HAWAIIAN PEOPLE ff W. D. ALEXANDER PUBLISHED BY ORDER OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF THE HAWAIIAN KINGDOM NEW YORK,: . CINCINNATI•:• CHICAGO AMERICAN BOOK C.OMPANY Digitized by Google ' .. HARVARD COLLEGELIBRAllY BEQUESTOF RCLANOBUr.ll,' , ,E DIXOII f,'.AY 19, 1936 0oPYBIGRT, 1891, BY AlilBIOAN BooK Co)[PA.NY. W. P. 2 1 Digit zed by Google \ PREFACE AT the request of the Board of Education, I have .fi. endeavored to write a simple and concise history of the Hawaiian people, which, it is hoped, may be useful to the teachers and higher classes in our schools. As there is, however, no book in existence that covers the whole ground, and as the earlier histories are entirely out of print, it has been deemed best to prepare not merely a school-book, but a history for the benefit of the general public. This book has been written in the intervals of a labo rious occupation, from the stand-point of a patriotic Hawaiian, for the young people of this country rather than for foreign readers. This fact will account for its local coloring, and for the prominence given to certain topics of local interest. Especial pains have been taken to supply the want of a correct account of the ancient civil polity and religion of the Hawaiian race. This history is not merely a compilation. It is based upon a careful study of the original authorities, the writer having had the use of the principal existing collections of Hawaiian manuscripts, and having examined the early archives of the government, as well as nearly all the existing materials in print.

Honors Thesis KEKUAOKALANI: AN HISTORAL FICTION EXPLORATION OF THE HAWAIIAN ICONOCLASM by Alexander Keone Kapuni Oldroyd Submitted to Brigham Young University in partial fulfillment of graduation requirements for University Honors English Department Brigham Young University December 2018 Advisor: John Bennion, Honors Coordinator: John Talbot ABSTRACT KEKUAOKALANI: AN HISTORAL FICTION EXPLORATION OF THE HAWAIIAN ICONOCLASM Alexander K. K. Oldroyd English Department Bachelor of Arts This thesis offers an exploration of the Hawaiian Iconoclasm of 1819 through the lens of an historical fiction novella. The thesis consists of two parts: a critical introduction outlining the theoretical background and writing process and the novella itself. 1819 was a year of incredible change on Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha, the Great Uniter and first monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, had recently died, thousands of the indigenous population were dying, and foreign powers were arriving with increasing frequency, bringing with them change that could not be undone.

Sensibility – what is that? What in God’s name is An Afterword? I haven’t the faintest idea. And concerning Book design, I am fully ignorant. What is ‘A Slipcase’ supposed to mean again, and what the heck is Boriswood? The Canons of page construction – I don’t know what that is. I haven’t got a clue. How am I supposed to make sense of Traditional Chinese bookbinding, and what the hell is an Initial? Containers are a mystery to me. And what about A Post box, and what on earth is The Hollow Nickel Case? An Ammunition box – dunno. Couldn’t tell you. I’m not well-versed in Postal systems. And I don’t know what Bulk mail is or what is supposed to be special about A Catcher pouch. I don’t know what people mean by ‘Bags’. What’s the deal with The Arhuaca mochila, and what is the mystery about A Bin bag? Am I supposed to be familiar with A Carpet bag? How should I know? Cradleboard? Come again? Never heard of it. I have no idea. A Changing bag – never heard of it. I’ve never heard of Carriages. A Dogcart – what does that mean? A Ralli car? Doesn’t ring a bell. I have absolutely no idea. And what the hell is Tandem, and what is the deal with the Mail coach? 4 I don’t know the first thing about Postal system of the United Kingdom.

FACING THE SPEARS OF CHANGE: THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF IOANE KANEIAKAMA PAPA ʻĪʻĪ A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAIʻI AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN ENGLISH DECEMBER 2014 By Marie Alohalani Brown Dissertation Committee: Craig Howes, Chairperson Cristina Bacchilega Kuʻualoha Hoʻomanawanui Jeffrey Kapali Lyon M. Puakea Nogelmeier DEDICATION In memory of Alton R. Brown and Steven Y. Kimura. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This journey, which has ended with a doctoral degree after eleven years and three months of being a student, began long before I decided, at forty-two, to enroll as a freshman in the University of Hawaiʻi System. Looking back, I can now clearly see the path that led me to this point. Along the way I was guided, protected, assisted, and inspired by ka poʻe akua, poʻe ʻaumākua, ka poʻe kūpuna, my ʻohana, my children, my friends, my kumu, and my students. As a Kanaka Maoli, I am deeply motivated by aloha and mahalo for the ʻāina, my kūpuna, and my fellow Kānaka Maoli—past and present. They have been at the forefront of my mind in any intellectual efforts I have produced, and will continue to inspire my future research. To all the intellectuals whose efforts have paved the way for my own, and whose works have influenced me, I am beholden. A special thanks to my dissertation chair Craig Howes whose tireless efforts have made me a better scholar. Three of my committee members are long-time mentors, Puakea Nogelmeier, kuʻualoha hoʻomanawanui, and Cristina Bacchilega, and I am eternally indebted to them.

  • KEKĀHI MO'olelo MAOLI O KA HANA LAWAI'a: a COLLECTION of NATIVE TRADITIONS and HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS on FISHING in the HAWAIIAN ISLANDS Overview
KEKHI MO‘OLELO MAOLI O KA HANA LAWAI‘A: A COLLECTION OF NATIVE TRADITIONS AND HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS ON FISHING IN THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS Overview This part of the study presents readers with a collection of mo‘olelo — native traditions and historical accounts (some translated from the original Hawaiian texts by Maly) — which document Hawaiian knowledge, beliefs, customs, use, and management of fisheries and aquatic resources. While a wide collection of mo‘olelo, spanning the length of the Hawaiian Archipelago are cited in this section of the study, not every tradition describing fishing, marine resources, and the native customs associated with them has been included. The selected traditions include detailed descriptions of religious beliefs and cultural practices associated with aquatic resources, and the development of Hawaiian fishing techniques. The narratives also provide specific documentation pertaining to the lands and waters in which such practices occurred or resources were found. The accounts cited, focus on several of the best known native writers (bringing their instruction into one collection), and also on many other important narratives which have had little review since their dates of original publication in Hawaiian. Many of the narratives include specific references to cultural sites, such as ko‘a (on shore and in ocean fishing shrines and station markers), resources procurement sites (both on land and in the water), and the traditional and customary laws governing care for, and use of the wide range of resources from the uplands to the ocean depths. A number of the accounts cited in this section of the study, have been excerpted from larger traditions which are also associated with regional localities, and events of “national” significance in Hawaiian history.

pat l. griffin The Līhu‘e Place Name on Kaua‘i Did Kaikioewa name Līhu‘e?1 Ethel Damon says he did. She makes the claim three times in Koamalu: A Story of Pioneers on Kauai and of What They Built in That Island Garden. On page 402 of Koamalu, Damon states: When [Kaikioewa’s] house and church in the ahupuaa of Nawiliwili were completed, he elected to call the spot Lihue, a place name not of Kauai-nei, but one borrowed from the region of his earlier home on the Waianae plains of Oahu. This fact was once told to Thomas G. Thrum by Miss Lucy Peabody, a Hawaiian of rank revered by us all, and one deeply learned in the lore of her native country. Mr. Thrum, him- self one of our foremost Hawaiian scholars, further remarks that the Hawaiian word lihue means gooseflesh, and on Oahu probably had some original association of meaning. But even in the days of Kaikioewa, this early flavor of the name had perhaps become merged in that of a place merely, and as such, in the sense of home, was doubtless brought across the Kauai channel by the old chieftain from Oahu.2 Eleven pages later Damon again reminds her readers about Kai kio- ewa’s Līhu‘e, “the very name of the little settlement borrowed from the neighboring island of Oahu.” And on page 905 she reiterates Kai kioewa’s authorship of Līhu‘e: “its name was of his adoption.” Pat L. Griffin holds a Master’s degree in history from Goddard College.

  • MO'olelo 'ÄINA–SELECTED NATIVE TRADITIONS and HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS of the LANDS and PEOPLE of the LAHAINA REGION 1. Hawaii
MO‘OLELO ‘ÄINA–SELECTED NATIVE TRADITIONS AND HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS OF THE LANDS AND PEOPLE OF THE LAHAINA REGION This section of the study is organized chronologically, by several sub-topics, and provides readers with access to a collection of traditions and historical accounts recorded by native writers and foreign collectors of Hawaiian history. The various topic-sections include: traditions from antiquity as handed down over the generations; events in the later period of native history (generally focused upon conflicts between rival chiefs); historical events in the lives of residents of the Kaua‘ula-Lahaina region; descriptions of the land, people, and land use recorded by Hawaiians and foreigners (ca. 1793 to 1930), including records of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (A.B.C.F.M.). The combined documentary resources provide readers with a comprehensive history of—the land, people, and resources of the Kaua‘ula-Lahaina region. There are recorded descriptions of traditional and customary practices, and how residency and subsistence practices were changed with the development of western business and economic interests. The narratives are provided here, as quoted materials, allowing the original writers to convey the traditions, history and events in their original context. Such resources, which are often difficult to access, will provide present and future generations with important resources and documentation for development of preservation programs, and interpretive-educational materials. 1. Hawaiian Lore and History (Antiquity to the 1820s) Pu‘uwaiohina at Kaua‘ula: The Naming of Mountains and Hills on the Lahaina Landscape (In the Time of the Gods) In the time when the gods still walked the earth, it is said that several important mountains and hills of the Lahaina District were formed and named.
