  • 2017 – 2018 Judiciary History Center Annual Report
King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center 2017-2018 Annual Report Statue of Kamehameha I King Kamehameha V Lot Kapuāiwa, grandson of Kamehameha I, ascended the throne in 1863 and was the last Kamehameha to rule the Kingdom of Hawai‘i. As a national leader, Lot made foreign relations and the preservation of independence his primary objectives. His advocacy for Hawaiians inspired a cultural renaissance which included the revival of hula and chant and licensing of medical kāhuna to practice their healing arts. During his reign, Lot commissioned a number of public works including the construction of Ali‘iōlani Hale. In 2000, the Judiciary History Center was renamed to the King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center in his honor. History of Ali‘iōlani Hale Historic Ali‘iōlani Hale provides the ideal environment for the Judiciary History Center. Initiated during the reign of Kamehameha V and completed during the reign of Kalākaua, Ali‘iōlani Hale opened its doors in 1874. The Legislature and the Supreme Court of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i were the original occupants of the building. After the overthrow of the Monarchy in 1893, the Legislature moved to ‘Iolani Palace. Ali‘iōlani Hale has remained the home of the Supreme Court for well over 100 years. The National Museum, the first museum in Hawai‘i, opened in Ali‘iōlani Hale in 1874. For many years, the National Museum occupied rooms on the second floor and welcomed visitors to view its fine collection of Hawaiian artifacts. In 1898, the Republic of Hawaiʻi's government transferred ownership of the collection to the Bishop Museum.

  • Commemorating the Hawaiian Mission Bicentennial
Hawaiian Mission Bicentennial Commemorating the Hawaiian Mission Bicentennial The Second Great Awakening was a Protestant religious revival during the early 19th-century in the United States. During this time, several missionary societies were formed. The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) was organized under Calvinist ecumenical auspices at Bradford, Massachusetts, on the June 29, 1810. The first of the missions of the ABCFM were to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and India, as well as to the Cherokee and Choctaw of the southeast US. In October 1816, the ABCFM established the Foreign Mission School in Cornwall, CT, for the instruction of native youth to become missionaries, physicians, surgeons, schoolmasters or interpreters. By 1817, a dozen students, six of them Hawaiians, were training at the Foreign Mission School to become missionaries to teach the Christian faith to people around the world. One of those was ʻŌpūkahaʻia, a young Hawaiian who came to the US in 1809, who was being groomed to be a key figure in a mission to Hawai‘i. ʻŌpūkahaʻia yearned “with great earnestness that he would (return to Hawaiʻi) and preach the Gospel to his poor countrymen.” Unfortunately, ʻŌpūkahaʻia died unexpectedly at Cornwall on February 17, 1818. The life and memoirs of ʻŌpūkahaʻia inspired other missionaries to volunteer to carry his message to the Hawaiian Islands. On October 23, 1819, the Pioneer Company of ABCFM missionaries from the northeast US, set sail on the Thaddeus for the Hawaiian Islands. They first sighted the Islands and arrived at Kawaihae on March 30, 1820, and finally anchored at Kailua-Kona, April 4, 1820.

P. 2 1 Digit zed by Google \ PREFACE AT the request of the Board of Education, I have .fi. endeavored to write a simple and concise history of the Hawaiian people, which, it is hoped, may be useful to the teachers and higher classes in our schools. As there is, however, no book in existence that covers the whole ground, and as the earlier histories are entirely out of print, it has been deemed best to prepare not merely a school-book, but a history for the benefit of the general public. This book has been written in the intervals of a labo rious occupation, from the stand-point of a patriotic Hawaiian, for the young people of this country rather than for foreign readers. This fact will account for its local coloring, and for the prominence given to certain topics of local interest. Especial pains have been taken to supply the want of a correct account of the ancient civil polity and religion of the Hawaiian race. This history is not merely a compilation. It is based upon a careful study of the original authorities, the writer having had the use of the principal existing collections of Hawaiian manuscripts, and having examined the early archives of the government, as well as nearly all the existing materials in print.

  • Historical Ethnography and Archaeology of Russian Fort Elisabeth State Historical Park, Waimea, Kaua'i
Historical Ethnography and Archaeology of Russian Fort Elisabeth State Historical Park, Waimea, Kaua'i Peter R Mills Department ofAnthropology, University ofVermont Introduction There is a sign on the highway in Waimea, Kaua'i in the Hawaiian Islands with the words "Russian Fort" printed on it. Local residents use the same term to refer to the State Historical Park that the sign marks. I give this introduction not because it is the best, but because it is the one that everyone else gets. Fort Elisabeth was built in Waimea, Kaua' i following an alliance between Kaumuali'i, paramount chief of Kaua'i, and Georg Anton Schiffer of the Russian-American Company (RAC) in 1816. Georg Schaffer and the RAC were forced to leave Kaua'i in 1817 which left Kaumuali'i in sole control of the fort. Most tourists visiting the site are surprised to fmd that Russians were building forts in the Hawaiian Islands, but the story of Fort Elisabeth and two smaller forts (Alexander and Barclay) on the north shore of Kaua'i (Figure 1) has been "well-tilled" (Barratt 1988:v) for over a century (Alexander 1894; Barratt 1988:15-24; Bolkhovitinov 1973; Bradley 1942; Emerson 1900; Golder 1930; Gronski 1928; Jarves 1844:201-203; Mazour 1937; Mehnert 1939: 22-65; Okun 1951; Pierce 1965; Tumarkin 1964:134-166; Whitney 1838:48-51). On Kaua'i, Fort Elisabeth seems to be perceived as a cumbersome and obscure monument to 19th century European expansion, lacking in any connection to traditional Hawaiian landscapes. Within the academic community, little recent attention focuses on the fort other than Richard Pierce's Russia's Hawaiian Adventure 1815-1817 (1965) with a follow-up article by Bolkhovitinov (1973).

Over the past several months I have met with parish leaders in each of our nine vicariates to receive input on the renewal of our diocesan pasto- ral plan. I am grateful to all who shared their insights so that we can be good stewards of the resources of time, talent, and treasure that the Lord has entrusted to us for his mission. I am particularly grateful to James Walsh, Director of Pastoral Planning, for his great work on the develop- ment of this pastoral plan. Those who are familiar with our last pastoral plan “The Roadmap for Our Mission” will notice similarities between this current plan and the “Roadmap.” While the priorities may be similar, I want this pastoral plan to help us all direct our attention outward, and not simply to focus on the internal structures and programs of our diocese and parishes. This is in keeping with the mandate of Jesus himself: “Go, therefore, and make dis- ciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have com- manded you.
