EDITOR’S LETTER

Truth, Love, and Volunteering

Editor’s Letter

I finished a semester working as an editor-in-chief. When I first took over as an editor-in-chief, I felt a lot of pressure. However, I’ve published 2 articles and successfully completed the speech contest. Through this experience, I thought I could perform the role of the editor-in-chief well.

Also, I was able to learn about the role of a leader while serving as the editor-in-chief. I want to explain the leader’s role related to our university ideology; Truth, Love, and Volunteering. These 3 things are the most important factors to be a trusted editor as well as the reporters.

Truth, I want to explain why “truth” is important. I think truth can make a big difference. By pursuing the truth, I have learned the ability to run The Mokwon Chimes in a fair and clean way. In order to increase fairness, I disclosed all financial aspects of The Mokwon Chimes transparently to all reporters. Furthermore, I fairly distributed the articles regardless of the reporter’s status.

Love. The power of love allowed all of our reporters to unite as one. Our reporters always write articles and organize events which related to The Mokwon Chimes with love in mind. We always investigated which topic interested the students and what is useful to our students. These enable us to write successful articles that satisfy students.

Volunteering. I think a leader is a facilitator of the team. I think the most important thing for being a leader is serving other people without a position and a mind of dedication. These things made The Mokwon Chimes run well. I will play my role as a facilitator and leader to grow into a better team for the rest of the semester. Like this, our reporters will also serve The Mokwon Chimes with the spirit of volunteering.

I want to insist that these 3 factors can change our lives. I think we can improve our lives by following these 3 things. The Mokwon Chimes will always strive to become a better university press than the year before. I’d like to say please keep your eyes on our articles and praise our hard working reporters. Truth, Love, and Volunteering.

Two Men Who Can’t Go Back to Their Group

By Lee Soonji Desk-Manager [email protected]

No one disliked TVXQ or Big Bang when you were in school. After a long time, the five members are now unable to stand on the same stage. The public is constantly looking at the entertainment industry with suspicion day after day. Also, public discontent grows with all the different police investigations. Park Yoo-chun, who was one of TVXQ's members, was questioned by the drug investigation team of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency for two consecutive days. After Hwang Ha-na, the only granddaughter of Namyang Dairy's founder, was arrested on drug charges, police applied for a travel ban on Park and raided his home, vehicle and mobile phone. In addition, Park Yoo-chun was investigated in front of an ATM in earlier this year. CCTV proof showed hundreds of thousands of won deposited into an account suspected of being a drug dealer. As such, the police investigation into Park was quick and lasted just two weeks. Thanks to the police's speedy investigation, Park admitted to the charge. This resulted in lots of complaints about the lack of progress in the investigation about “Burning Sun”. Netizens suspect that the media reports on Park Yoo-chun's police investigation are intended to mask their interest in Seung-ri scandal, who was one of the members of Big Bang. As such, the Burning Sun case has not produced any significant results in the months since the allegations surfaced.

The conflict between Government and Public Transportation

By Yang Hwidong Staff-Reporter [email protected]

In May 2019, intra-city bus workers or employees announced their walkout. This was due to a conflict between the government and intra-city bus companies. Direct reason for this walkout was ’the 52 workweek hours’ which started on June 1st, 2018. Drivers of intra-city buses originally worked 60 hours per week. However, the workout was delayed until June 1st, 2019. So, they started to negotiate with the government. They insist that when this system applied, drivers’ salary will be amazingly decrease. Also, when this system starts companies will need to hire more than 15,000 new drivers. But, most people say they will not join the bus company because when they compare their salary with the inter-city bus company because inter- city bus company’s salary is much higher than those. To solve this problem, various region’s intra-bus companies started to negotiate with the government, but the government was inactive about this issue. So, the drivers announced the walkout. At first, most of the cities participated in this walkout. But, drivers in eight metropolitan cities and provinces agreed on wage hikes and other working conditions and scrapped the strike, with Seoul making a deal 90 minutes before the planned walkout and agreeing on a salary hike of 3.6 percent and a gradual extension of the retirement age from 61 to 63. However, some cities didn’t scrap the strike and delayed the strike. The government need to consider a countermeasure to serve more convenience of intra-city bus.

The 24th English Speaking Contest hosted by TMC!

Lee Yejii Staff-Reporter [email protected]

On Friday, May 17, 2019, the English-speaking contest was held in U408. In fact, this is the third speech contest hosted by the Mokwon Chimes. We have been trying to hold many contests and events for Mokwon University students who want to improve their English skills and challenged through various experiences. So, we held contests like essay contest, TOEIC test contest, pop song contest, Mokwon song contest, and others. Finally, we realized that English speaking contest and pop song contest, these two contests are the most helpful for our university students and can be judged fairly. So, this year, we held the third English speaking contest and many students participated in this contest with a great passion. Today, I was an MC at this contest, I learned a lot from the participants and made sure that things ran smoothly.

In this contest, 14 students participated and professor Kim Min-Jeong of the English Education Department, and Chief editor Lee Kyoung-Hyun of TMC were in charge the judging panel. Prize money was organized so that the first prize of each competition was 150,000 won, the second 100,000 won, and the third 50,000 won. The subject of the competition was a free topic and participants could use Power Point or other materials. Most participants spoke on topics related to their majors, the most impressive topic was 'Us our microbe', which was the speech from the student of the Department of Microbiology. The topic was very interesting, and I learned new information from his speech. So, it was very useful and informative.

The competition was divided into two tracks. A track was judged with English majors, and B track was judged with English non-majors. The reason why TMC divided the track this way was to conduct the examination fairly. In the past, it was advantageous for English majors, when the track was not divided. Due to the complaints from many students, it was decided to split the track into two for the sake of fairness.

8 | MOKWON CHIMES MOKWON NEWS

In Track A, two students of English education department and some students of English literature department participate. In particular, Sim Sang-Yub who is the English education department student won the first prize at English Speech Contest last year. He also won awards in this year’s competition. Unlike the other participants, he did not use PPT, instead, he used some tools. Particularly, the tool was a 'chair'. The subject was 'Don't think, just jump'. I was really impressed with his speech. Because he gave me hope with his speaking ability. He said that he was not good at English conversation at first. So, when he first joined the English conversation club 'Toastmasters', he said he could only say 'I do not speak English well', 'No thanks'. However, he decided not to be afraid and just 'jump', and he said he was now good at speech.

Through this English speech contest, the participants gave many useful and meaningful contents to people. And what all the participants had in common was that their speech was about their personal experience. So, through their speech, I felt their experiences, hobbies, even their values. And through their speech, I learned a lot of lessons and even got hope. This contest will be held next year. At that time, I hope that many students would participate in this contest and tell their experiences and tell good stories. Also, English speaking skills are very important to interview in many companies these days. I sincerely recommend taking this opportunity for students to improve their English skills through their experiences and finally, I would like to applaud all of the participants for an excellent completion of the Third English Speech Contest.

A Man with a Knife Is Walking Close to Mokwon University

Lee Jaemin Cub-Reporter [email protected]

On April 19, ‘A man with a knife walked around Mokwon University, Doan-dong and Wonshin Heung-dong. You’d better be careful.’ was posted with pictures on Facebook. So, students at Mokwon University, who saw the article or read the comments, notified students to be careful. They took care of the students.

As the article spread, students at Mokwon University and nearby residents were spending the day in fear and anxiety. However, the article was found to have been a simple controversy, which citizens thought was fortunate.

April 19th, between 15:50 and 17:13 'A long-haired man carrying a paper bag with a letter saying he needs money is walking around with a knife.' 'A man carries a knife.’ These reports were received three times. So, police were dispatched to the scene but couldn’t find the man.

April 20th, 12:51 Another report came in at the police station. "A man with a knife had appeared again near the Heung-do elementary school" Then the police were called out at once and found the man. But on this day, he was holding nothing in his hand. When police asked him about his report yesterday, he claimed that he had never asked for money from any passersby or children, and that he had just bought a rice cake on a stick and walked around with the remaining wooden chopsticks in his hand.

10 | MOKWON CHIMES MOKWON NEWS

In fact, the report on the 19th was made by the caller looking at the photos and writings posted on the MOMCAFE in Doan-dong. If you zoom in on the picture, you can see a pair of wooden chopsticks in his hand, and there was nothing you could see as a weapon. Also, there was no direct witness or evidence that he threatened any passersby with a weapon or demanded money. There was no real threat as was posted on the Doan-dong MOMCAFE

Therefore, the photos and comments that had spread online were judged to have been caused by anxiety about the JinJu arson attack incident. Also, the appearance and behavior of the longhaired suspect contributed to the post going viral.

The controversial case in Jinju happened not long ago. The suspect, Ahn In-deuk, had lived in Jugong Apartment in Gajwa-dong, Jinju since 2015. However, there had been frequent feuds between him and his neighbors, resulting in seven police appearances in 2019. Of the seven police calls, five occurred in his apartment, while the other two occurred at Ahn’s company.

At around 4:25 a.m. on April 17, 2019, suspect Ahn In-deuk,42, lit a fire as soon as he sprayed gasoline at his home He then went down the stairs to the second floor to wait for residents to evacuate. As soon as the fire broke out, the residents of the apartment came out and started to evacuate, then Ahn In-deuk wielded his weapons. This action killed five people, and six others were seriously and slightly injured. Nine people were injured from the smoke of the fire. After police arrived at the scene, the suspect, Ahn In-deuk, was arrested after a confrontation. Shortly after the arrest, Ahn in-deuk admitted to most of the charges. But, he refused to speak further, rambling about his motives, saying he had committed the crime because of unpaid wages.

The dates between the two incidents were not far apart, so people spent each day in anxiety and fear until a man with long hair was arrested. A man with a “weapon” near the Mokwon University was just a misunderstanding but the Jinju arson attack was a real incident. Still, there is controversy in some places as to whether the man’s threat was true or not. Netizens who don’t think the incident was just a “happening” are gathering more evidence and spreading it on social media. However, netizens who think it was a simple incident are arguing with them not to spread false information anymore. The misunderstood man is a regular office worker. The posting of face photos that infringe on personal information can violate the law due to cyber defamation and others should be careful.

Do not make reports to the police prematurely unless you have witnessed them correctly.

The Inflation: Suffering of the Working Class

Yu Jinho Desk-Manager [email protected]

Recently, the economy of the working class has turned on emergency lights. Prices are rising again. People are spending a lot of money in May because May has special days like Parents' Day or weddings and many other events. Consequently, the inflation of prices is happening to ordinary people. As a result, inflation makes lots of bad things. The price of gasoline was increased day by day. According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, starting May 7, the scope of oil tax cuts will be reduced from 15 percent to 7 percent. This means that the price of gasoline will be increased. Pork belly goes up in price because African swine fever spread in China. According to the Korea Consumer Agency, the price of pork was 2,663 won per 100 grams this month. In May last year, 100 grams of pork belly was sold for 2,071 won. Alcoholic beverages also went up in price. The Hite-Jinro Company raised factory prices by 6.45%. Therefore, convenience stores and other eateries will be raising their selling prices. Not only liquor but also taxi and inter-city express bus fares will be increased. If inflation doesn't stop rising, it can make various problems.

What Is the Cause of Inflation? The suffering of the working class is getting worse and worse, because all of the prices are rising. On the other hand, according to the government's CPI (Consumer Price Index), it is concerned about deflation as the rate of increase remains at zero. Why does this difference occur?

12 | MOKWON CHIMES SOCIAL AFFAIRS

The CPI is an index that combines goods and services by the survey and makes their average. Meanwhile, people's psychology is different and subjective according to form. Especially, people's psychology was affected by loss aversion. It refers to psychology that greatly evaluates the value of what people have lost rather than the value of what they have gained. For example, the price of an oriental melon and a peach is the same. However, if melon prices rise by 5% and peach prices fall by 5%, consumer prices will not be changed but consumers will feel that the prices went up. So, what is the real cause? The first cause of inflation is the government's fiscal deficit. The second reason is the increase in the volume of currency. In countries with rapid economic growth, the amount of money issued to meet the demand for money needed for transactions increases sharply. An increase in the amount of money reduces interest rates, increases investment, expands production activity, increases employment, and increases prices. These are the main reasons for inflation.

The Present Situation and Prospects of the Korean Economy Price are connected with the life of the citizen. The government has to stabilize prices. Currently, the problem is that prices are low, but prices felt by ordinary people are not low. In pursuing policies, it is necessary to respond by separating deflation due to the economic slowdown and increasing prices of individual items. To solve this problem, the government should expand its spending and proceed with a relaxed monetary policy. Also, the government should investigate the supply and demand of each sector. If there is a shortage of supplies, they need to increase the supply through the improvement of distribution structure. According to economists, the Korean economy could enter a long-term slump in the 'L' shape. Moreover, it also predicted that this year's growth rate will be below 2.6 percent. They considered "recovering the market" as a solution to the problem. In addition, the sharp increase in the minimum wage had negative effects on self-employed businesses or small and medium-sized enterprises. So, they said that the minimum wage should be frozen in the next year. Economists expect the trend will be worse. Also, they said the government should reduce artificial market intervention and ensure maximum corporate autonomy to help revive growth engines. Although private consumption increased, it was estimated that it was not an increase in domestic consumption. Ahn, a professor at Chung-Ang University, stressed that the basic direction of economic policy should be shifted to private enterprise growth and innovative start- ups.

Miserable Fire, Forest Fire Yang Hwidong Staff-Reporter [email protected]

Last spring there were several terrible forest fires. As people know because of the dry weather of spring, there are many forest fires. However, this spring there were more memorable forest fires than during other years.

Gangwon-do Forest Fire

On April 4th, in Gangwon-do, it was a peaceful day except the strong wind whose speed was about 35.6m/s. Suddenly at 7 p.m., a huge forest fire started. The fire was caused by a wire, which waved in the wind. Because of the strong wind that day, the fire spread over several cities. It was the biggest forest fire of 2019, and it went out after 2 days. Although there is a miserable story, there are several notable stories that occurred as a result.

1. A scale of damage

The fire originally started from one telephone pole in front of a gas station of Goseong-gun. This flame spread to the forest in front of that. Also due to the powerful winds, the spark went over hundreds of kilometers and caused another forest fire. Although the fire station sent their firefighters just after 10 minutes, the fire had spread so fast that they couldn’t stop the fire from quickly spreading. It spread over Sokcho-si, Gangneung, Donghae-si, and Inje-gun. As the fire was becoming more out of control, the government designated those regions as a special disaster area and over 4000 people took refuge. The fire was extinguished after it burned over 1757ha which is about 539 times larger than a soccer stadium and twice as large as Yeoui-do. Because of this terrible forest fire, two people died, and 11 people were injured.

2. The fast action of the government

Although firefighters couldn’t stop the fire at first, there was a fast action of the government, which announced to use every possible resource as soon as possible. Because of this announcement, 827 fire engines, over 3000 firefighters, and 110 helicopters were deployed from other cities. Not only firefighters but also police officers and army were gathered to stop that fire. The Ministry of Defense

14 | MOKWON CHIMES SOCIAL AFFAIRS

supported firefighters by providing over 16,500 soldiers, 26 military fire engines, and 32 helicopters and they served combat rations to refugees. Also, police officers managed to prevent a terribleaccident by moving over 5 tons of explosives from a site, which was in fire’s way.

3. After the fire went out

Not only did this forest fire burn the forest, it also burned downtowns of some cities. The total physical damage came to 401 houses, 7 7 storage units, 158 tour areas and 100 buildings. Because of this, 722 refugees are staying in temporary residence facilities. Also, network service of Gangwon-do was stopped. So, there were a lot of people who are trying to find their friends, and families. In this situation, however, some people said, ‘that is not so much different with other forest fires.’ Companies helped them with their products. For example, convenience stores served water, noodles and other items. Also, other companies also sent relief. Some entertainers donated money to help them restore Gangwon-do’s nature. One restaurant in Chuncheon served food to firefighters from various places in Korea anonymously.

Daejeon forest fire

On April 16th at 1 p.m. smoke rose up in thick clouds behind Mokwon University. Many students saw that smoke and evacuated. This forest fire spread to about 200 meters. Most people who witnessed this fire were surprised because it spread so much and so quick. So, they worried about it because all of them saw news about Gangwon-do forest fire. Fortunately, it wasn’t like that due to fast action of firefighters of Daejeon. Nobody knows this fire’s starting point, most people think this forest fire originated from dry weather on that day.

This spring has surely seen a lot of memorable forest fires. I hope that we work actively toward preventing a forest fire in order to avoid it’s dangerous and destructive forces.

Disclosing Cho Doo-soon’s Face, a Dilemma between Public interest and Stigma

Cho Hannah Cub-Reporter [email protected]

On April 24, MBC's 'Real Story Expedition Team' revealed the face of the brutal criminal, Cho Doo-soon, to the public for the first time. Cho Doo-soon is serving eleven years for kidnapping and brutally raping a young elementary school student in 2008. The production team said he had only about 600 days left in his prison term, so after much thought, they revealed his face in the hope that society should be more alert.

His identity had been withheld for the past 11 years because of Article 8 paragraph 2 of the Special Act on the Punishment of Specific Crimes, including the face of the accused, was re-established in April 2010. In the case of a specifically violent crime where the means of the crime are cruel, and the damage is significant, the identity can be disclosed if there is sufficient evidence to suggest that the suspect committed the crime. But the case that was the cause for the creation of law was the case of serial killer Kang Ho-soon, and the one we're dealing with now happened in 2008, two years before that. So, it wasn't applied retroactively. In other words, in the case of Cho Doo-soon, there was no legal basis and we could not disclose his personal information. So, we've only been able to check his personal information only for five years through 'sex offender alerting-e'. However, the sex offender alert only checks the personal information of the offender when it is confirmed that our residence is near the criminal. It is also considerably more restrictive than disclosure via broadcasting because it is punishable if the information is leaked.

16 | MOKWON CHIMES SOCIAL AFFAIRS

The broadcaster also researched the management of "sex offender alerting," is the only means to protect the public from sex offenders. According to the investigation conducted by the broadcasting team, there were cases where sex offenders were often incorrectly registered their residences as actual residences such as non-residential places like tombs, factories or vacant lots, and where they continued to live in places where criminal acts occurred, etc. In addition, there are child sex offenders living right in front of elementary schools, pastors who are again in the ministry at the same place after raping minors, and child sex offenders who serve as volunteers at child care centers, according to the report. Regarding the disclosure of Cho Doo-soon's face, the production staff explained, "Please find answers on the air. What is more important among the safety of the majority of the people or the honor and portrait rights of criminals?"

After the broadcast, Cho Doo-soon's public disclosure of his face and comments on the management of the sex offender alert led to the public's argument of the pros and cons for the issue. Some people say, although the disclosure of Cho's personal appearance is not intended for slander but for the safety of the people, such information is not a matter to be disclosed or determined according to public opinion, as disclosure affects an individual in itself. Since the law is set, it should be decided whether to make it public or not according to the law. They also argued that if the standards on human rights are broken one by one in this way, even greater violations of human rights can be made as a result, and that it should be carried out within very careful and strict standards.

Others say they approve of the disclosure because it is aimed at protecting children and adolescents from sex crimes and protecting the public from repeat offenders, not indiscriminately disclosing the identity of criminals or abusing information. They claimed that nine out of 10 people agreed about the fact that Cho's face should be revealed, but the law had blocked them.

For sure, the alternative of branding criminals socially, such as the release of faces through broadcasting, can help ease anxiety, but it requires deep concern. Lawyer Kwon Yoon-joo advised, "We need to think about a desirable way to correct and reform them and bring them back to society as normal, rather than creating protective devices in a way that isolates and excludes them."

Decision Changed in 66 Years, Constitutional Inconsistency of Abortion

Kim Hyeonjung Cub-Reporter [email protected]

In Korean society, arguments for and against abortion are hot issues. South Korea defined "abortion" as a crime when the criminal law was enacted in 1953. In other words, doctors can be punished with up to two years in prison if they terminate a pregnancy with the (correct use) consent of a pregnant woman. 'Abortion’ refers to the artificial removal of an embryo developing in the womb before natural delivery.

People's perception of abortion

Korean people's perception of 'abortion' has shown a tendency to be more tolerant, raising concerns. More people become aware that abortion is illegal, but there is a high perception that it should be allowed if necessary. In addition, the perception that abortion is a "murder" has decreased. According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2010, 29.6 percent of women aged 15 to 44 had experience with abortions and there is a 15.8 percent abortion rate, the highest among major OECD countries.

The pros and cons of abortion

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, permission is the most important. Rather than the position that the ban should be "more strictly prohibited" (stated 21 percent of those surveyed), most people said it should be "allowed if necessary" (74 percent). By all the respondents' characteristics, the opinion "to allow abortion if necessary" prevailed, especially for those in their 20s and 40s. When asked why abortion ban should be strengthened, the reasons for the

18 | MOKWON CHIMES SOCIAL AFFAIRS

decline in population (low birth rates), respect for life and irresponsibility were found, while those who believed abortion should be allowed if necessary cited cases of crimes such as unwanted pregnancy, rape or sexual assault. While abortion-prohibitionists put the fetal right of life first, tolerance is more about the quality of life for women and children after childbirth.

A positive reaction to the constitution's nonconformity with abortion

Then, on April 11, 2019, a decision was made against the Constitution for the crime of abortion. Many people, including women, cheered, "No more." The 2012 punishment for having an abortion was reversed seven years after it was decided to be constitutional and abolished 66 years after the original law was enacted in 1953. The unconformity of the Constitution is to set a deadline for a revision of the law as a ‘Legal blank period’ could cause social confusion if it goes into effect immediately, Although the Constitutional Court will revise the Dec. 31, 2020 deadline, if it is not revised, it will be nullified on Jan. 1, 2021, and will be abolished altogether. The Constitutional Court ruled that women's right to a personal decision is excessively violated by opposing abortion altogether and allowing it on a limited basis. "Pregnancy and childbirth are important issues that can have a fundamental and decisive impact on women's lives," the court said. "The decision to maintain a pregnancy is a universal decision that reflects the results of deep consideration of the situation based on one’s own life and social views." "For the right to self-determination to be guaranteed, enough time must be available to decide whether to maintain a pregnancy or not," it said. "If you decide to have an abortion after careful consideration with relevant information and advice, you need to find a hospital where you can perform and complete the surgery.”

Abortion is the last choice.

Both the pro-abortion and the anti-abortion positions would agree that abortion is not something that is encouraging. So, we should respect the life of a fetus because it is a creature that can grow into a human being. For these reasons, I oppose legalizing abortion.

Essential Meaning of a Global Volunteer

Lee Soonji Desk-Manager [email protected]

Going abroad for volunteer work is on the bucket list of many university students. Most of them apply for it to build their background and fill a line on their resume. The range of the term varies from 1 week to a few months and they can do it through their university or supporting groups, churches, famous corporations, or other opportunities. In the case of famous corporations, they pay for the cost of selected students, including flight fare, but it’s highly competitive.

So, many students make use of school programs that have a relatively low competitive rate. Our school also has been sending about 20 students every year for “Mokwon Overseas Volunteers”. Jungmin Woo who has volunteered 2 times through this program recommended, “This program was reliable and really efficient in terms of the time and money because it’s from my school. For this reason, it is easier to feel a sense of belonging with the members than any other outside programs.”

Anyhow, global volunteering is the best chance to get an international perspective and global leadership. It’s because volunteers can’t feel the actual environment of poor countries before they go. Getting information about a detailed native life and reality of an unknown region through the news or TV is limited. Eunju Park who graduated from Gyeonggi foreign language high school went to Fiji for volunteering and says, “When I first heard I was going to Fiji island, I thought there was just a tourist attraction, so I didn’t think they needed to receive help from another country. However, there are a lot of children who have not received even basic medical treatment. This situation makes me think that the public image of a country cannot explain everything about the country. I decided that whichever country I go to, I have to get interested in the dark side of that country.” This is a real problem for the whole world. More well-known countries for sightseeing tend to have a high proportion of the poor. It’s important to develop the view that sees the invisible poor people as well as people in the slums most of you know.

20 | MOKWON CHIMES INTERNATIONAL

Myeongjun Choe who worked as a staff member of a supporting agency says “I’m majoring in Social Welfare and have volunteered many times. Whenever I go abroad to help foreign people, I realize that there are lots of people who need a little help. I thought that there are many people that needed help in relatively poor countries such as in Africa. However, other countries near Korea that I have been to have quite a few weak children. This large world view is what he thinks is one of the advantages of global volunteering. Actually, most people think that Africa or India have high poverty records and we have to support only them because of public advertisements (UNICEF, WORLD VISION..) showing the seriousness of poverty of these countries. It’s true but doing global volunteering doesn’t mean we have to go far away and provide tremendous help through popular support group. Many university students are doing global volunteering to fill a line their in international activity part. It is likely to cloud the issue of volunteering. If they actually go abroad, they are busy to follow the pre-planned program schedule. There’s no time to think why am I here and what do I have to do.

For these people, many volunteering organizations should stamp the essence of global volunteering on their mind. Nobody tells the role of a voluntary worker. Doing volunteer abroad is more than just help. They do a role of cultural brokers, civil ambassadors, global citizen, catalysts for development, innovators. Every single activity we do in the country forms an image of the Republic of Korea to the locals. Furthermore, overseas volunteers think about why inequality, conflict, famine and starvation still remain in the world. When you think about these ideas, you can have a deeper and much more meaningful experience.

The Fire of Notre Dame Cathedral Choi Jisu Staff-Reporter [email protected]

On the evening of April 15, the symbolic building of Paris, Notre Dame Cathedral, was seriously damaged by fire. At around 18:50, the spire began to burn, and the flames began to cover the entire roof. At that time, a fire engine arrived and sprayed with water, but the wind blew in the opposite direction, so it didn't help that well. The helicopter could not start extinguishing the fire because of concerns over secondary damage.

The Cathedral of Notre Dame in the center of Paris, France, is a building that represents French Gothic style. It is designated as a World Heritage Site and a must-see tourist course along with the Eiffel Tower. Typically, it is very famous for being the background of musicals, anime and movies such as Notre Dame de Paris and the hunchback of Notre Dame. This famous and important building caught fire and burned, and it was a big issue world-wide. According to the Parisian and French Ministry of Interior, fire broke out along the steeple of Notre Dame Cathedral on Cite Island, on the banks of the Parisian Old Town on the river at 6:50 pm. The police immediately evacuated tourists and citizens around the cathedral. Pedestrians were in shock and little children cried with fear.

Unfortunately, the initial location of the fire was so high that accessibility was bad.. At 23:00, the fire is put out and the Parisians are singing and praying that the cathedral will be safe. The fire broke out at around 3:30 am. This news spread worldwide and people watching got so sad and depressed. "Everything collapsed." reported various French media. The citizens of Paris were also shocked and crying and said this is a

22 | MOKWON CHIMES INTERNATIONAL

great tragedy. After the fire was extinguished, experts say it could take up to 40 years to restore the Notre-Dame cathedral in France, where the spire and roof were destroyed. Professor Emily Gerry, a professor of medieval European history at the University of Kent, UK, told CBS that "restoration will take 40 years." Other experts have foreseen a prolonged period from 10 years to 40 years. French President Emmanuel Mark Long has pledged to rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral within five years but has said he will not hurry.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and many rumors are circulating. A donation, quite an important part for reconstruction, has been given by the president of Gucci of 120 billion. Also, a donation of 1 trillion won was collected within one and a half days. Everyone donated in a heartfelt wish for the cathedral to be restored. With such astronomical donations, restoration costs are expected to be no big problem. A month later, architects and designers are pouring out ideas for reconstruction. It is hard to predict how the cathedral will be rebuilt, but it is a clue to the direction. French Prime Minister Edouard Filip said, "It will be a contest to ask questions, whether to restore the spiers or to make new ones." Some of the chapels opened the possibility of being redesigned with today's sense.

The historically important building the Notre-Dame cathedral caught fire, and it became a big shock for France and also the world. But now, France building designers and citizens are communicating with each other and trying to rebuild. One opinion is to build a roof-top swimming pool that is cross shaped. Some are talking about a glass greenhouse roof. Some insist that they must restore as the past one. France’s government is open to the modern type of reconstruction and therefore, novel ideas are popping out. The church is expected to revive with a lot of interest, affection, and ideas. We do not know how it will be built, but whatever comes back, with a modern sensibility or a gothic perfect restoration, it seems it will be cool and meaningful. Definitely, it was a shocking and sad occasion for both France and the world. Overcoming this sorrow, the rebuilt cathedral will be loved by people as a wonderful cultural heritage of world.

BTS, How They Fascinate the World!!

Lee Doowon Cub-Reporter [email protected]

Nowadays, we can easily recognize that K-pop has attracted a lot of popularity and attention all over the world. This K-pop trend started from The Wonder Girls’ “Nobody”, PSY’s “Gangnam Style”, BIGBANG, , and others. Through various idol groups, K-pop’s trend has been reinforced and improved. Especially, without a doubt, PSY’s Gangnam style rapidly brought about K-pop’s development. Although all the groups showed amazing things before, BTS is leading the trend of K-pop that we have never seen before. So, this article will talk about their strategies, success factors, and positive things.

BTS’s official Korean name is 방탄소년단 which means that the young generation will be protected from suffering, social prejudice and oppression. They will preserve their own music and values. The English name, BTS, has various meanings: Bang Tan boys, Bulletproof Boys Scouts and Beyond The Scene. BTS is composed of 7 members: V, Suga, Jungkook, RM, Jin, Jimin, JHope.

Let’s see how BTS success in many other countries.

There are many mentions of BTS from various oversea media outlets.

According to BBC, “BTS is an artist of the 21st century like Beatles and also it is a global pop sensation.” From Forbes, “The biggest powers of BTS are their messages and sayings on their albums, teamwork, personal abilities, directors, and creativity which have never seen before.

BTS separates itself from many other groups.

They do a lot of fancy and unique performance. Especially, their songs are not uncomfortable when western people listen to them. In detail, they have matched the global trend. Because previous K-pop groups only focused on the performance and appearance they tended to stick to a kind of a dance music. On the other hand, BTS caught on in the western music trend which is hip-hop and EDM. So, they combined this kind of music trend and K-pop’s unique and brilliant performances. As a result, they benefited from both familiarity and freshness

Music Videos

When we see BTS’s music videos, we might be surprised but its quality and technology such as CG. Compared with other singers or groups’ music videos, BTS’s videos are at a higher level and cover various subjects. They make videos with some form of Story-telling, so this is why many people are blown away by BTS’ music videos.

Members’ abilities

When viewers see their performance, you can understand that it is so hard and tough. Of course, all members are talented. They practice faithfully and so many times. As a result, each member has the tremendous ability to sing live while they are dancing hard. While this sounds quite simple, there are very few groups or singers who can sing well while dancing.

Lyrics and stories in their songs

When we see the lyrics in their songs, we realize that they are quite unusual. Before BTS came out, almost every

24 | MOKWON CHIMES INTERNATIONAL

group or singer’s lyrics are related to love. However, BTS was different, they make songs and lyrics about social issues, some cheerful messages, good meanings and unique subjects. As a result, BTS could make songs which are universally appreciated by various generations. Besides, if you see the music video or lyrics in the songs intensively, you realize that there are their own stories. Because, BTS couldn’t superstars at first. and even their company was not big like JYP, YG or SM, they took a lot of criticism and blame from public. In the end, they have stuck to their music and it has paid off.

‘방시혁’ producer

When he makes BTS, his strategy was great. He referenced and combined some positive strategies from YG, JYP, SM entertainments. Let’s see what it was!! First, from YG, brought the culture of respect for autonomy of YG artist. BTS members do their own song / lyrics work. As they study self, they could have their own musical color. So, five years after every member have grown to become an artist who can compose and write. Second, from SM, brought business strategy which is use one content in many ways. Each year, they show their growth through a single concert, which is huge scale, and strive to raise the artist's brand value through messenger emoticons and SNS channel communication as well as sales of Goodies. Finally, from JYP, brought catholicity. He has come to find universal elements that can be loved by as many people as possible around the world. And it was based on the hip-hop genre that Westerners are more comfortable with than the existing K-pops. As a result, they quickly absorbed overseas fans and applied the amazing performances to the BTS’s albums. And they could get both Individuality and catholicity.

Another meaning of success

The success of the BTS in the international music market (billboard) means that, not only has the brilliance of BTS been recognized at the musical level, but culture has grown and developed so much that it’s not necessarily that the lyrics are in English. It seems that North America’s eyes and ears are open to good music. Also, BTS is a starting point for similar success opportunities for other singers of other language groups other than English.

In Terms of Representative of Dorm Floor

Go Yuri Staff-Reporter [email protected]

Nowadays, at school executives support school life to make it more convenient. What kind of people support life in our dormitory? I met the dormitory floor managers and interviewed them.

Q. How is the dormitory composed?

A. First of all, the dormitory is divided in 3 buildings. The old dorm for female and male students and the new dorm for females only. The old one has 4 roommates in each room and the new one has two roommates each. There is one representative on each floor, so they have 8 people entirely in the old dorm. The new dorm has 8 people from the 3rd to 10th floor as well. Each dorm has a leader to generalize all representatives. Each dorm has two assistants as well as a library. The old dorm has a gym for exercise.

Q. How to be a representative of your dorm floor?

A. Before the end of a semester, each representative will announce every member of the dorm that select new recruits. At this time, whoever wants to be in charge of their dorm should write a cover letter through the document from the homepage. If you turn in it to the dormitory office within the period of submission, you will be appointed a date to interview. After figuring it out, then all you have to do is, have the interview by yourself. The interview will proceed under a comfortable atmosphere, so don’t need to worry about it. Finally, once you pass the entire process, you will get the message “Congratulations, you are going to work with us in the dorm from next semester.” You would then take over from the former representative.

Q. What do they do?

A. They join the dormitory early than other members. As soon as they enter, they inspect the keys which they are in charge of respectively. For the new dorm rooms, there are 5 keys including a spare for each room, and the old dorm has a number of keys. New dorm rooms

need all equipment to be checked thoroughly from 1 to 10 which is then marked and written down on paper, after finishing the key inspection. Another task is to count the bed sheets that students will use. We prepare a roll call once a month for the work done before we enter. And then reply to all the questions of students. If we have an emergency patient after midnight, we also take them to the emergency room. Which means, we are in charge of all sorts of issues that happen on each floor.

Q. What kind of event are you having during the first semester?

A. During the first semester, we have missionary work. In the day time, we run a game booth so that customers can give various gifts to people and during the night, we invite a singer to sing so we can listen to their songs. In addition, there is a lottery to get even more rewards. As I said previously, we have various gifts if you join us, I would very much appreciate it.

Q. What are the good sides to be a floor representative?

A. The biggest advantage is that you will quickly meet a variety of friends and get acquainted. Working together and caring for each other, we became very close to each other and made many good memories. Also, assistants always care for us and treat us with affection, so we can work in a good atmosphere like family. It is nice that the floor members remember us when they greet us outside the dormitory.

Q. What are the most difficult while being a floor representative?

A. The hardest point is to receive the same questions even if I have given the announcement at roll call. Also, the situations when people do not understand that a floor manager cannot accommodate all the suggestions, and people who charge off the things that are not attributed to the dormitory to the dormitory without any reason were very tough.

Q. Dormitory students will be reading our interview. Do you have any words?

A. I would like you to know that all of the dormitory’s staff is committed to making our dormitory life more comfortably. Also, I would like you to speak kindly on the phone because we are also a daughter and son of someone. We will continue our efforts to live a happy and comfortable dormitory life.

A UNIVERSITY STUDENT WHO WORKS PART-TMIE JOB

Ryoo Jungho Cub-Reporter [email protected]

In these days, most of college students in Korea have a part-time job. They work a part-time job like an office worker. They work not only during vacation but also during the semesters during university. The students who have part-time jobs are steadily increasing these days. There are various reasons why they have part-time jobs and many ways how they spend their monthly pay. Also, there are a variety of fields of part-time jobs. They commonly start with serving or assistants to chefs then they start to deliver or even enter sales. Even the in- service industry hires part-time workers. I interviewed college students about why they have a part-time job, why they need to do it and what they think about it.

Chungman chicken staff (hall serving) and student of Hanbat National University Jeong Hui Seong

1. What is the reason for working part-time I am doing part time work to buy something I want and pay my own way. I drive my car to go to university an hour each way. When I drive my car, l have to pay for gas. Because of these needs, I need to earn money or if I don’t work, I have a constraint about hanging out with my friends and eating delicious food, so I must work to eat and socialize comfortably. Through these things I can learn more experiences than other friends and buy anything I want. 2. Doesn’t it effect to your studies or your life Of course, I think I can get effected through my part-time job, but I do work in accordance to my schedule. So, I don’t get effected from my university and daily life. 3. What do your parents think about you working? My parents gave permission to me about working my part-time job. Also, my parents had a positive mind about my work and they said, “I will believe you and cheer for whatever you do”. So, I can work and can get courage for whatever I do.

Coin karaoke staff and student of Hannam University Im Gyu Gwang

1. What does coin karaoke do? Coin karaoke is different from other part-time jobs. There are many tasks in coin karaoke. First, when customers come in, I say hello to them and give them a mic cover. Then I explain to the customers about two ways. They can choose 2 options: one is coin and the other is time karaoke. Coin karaoke can determine the number of songs you want and the time option can sing an unspecified amount of songs in a limited amount of time. Sometimes when customers who are old come in, I have to go directly into the room and explain how to use the equipment to them. Finally, I must clean and set the room when the guests leave. But opening, closing, and calculating are similar to other jobs.

28 | MOKWON CHIMES INTERVIEW

2. What do you think about your part-time job? I have a positive mind about part-time job. I can buy anything I want and register at academies or study what I want. Also, I can earn money from my part-time job. The best is that I can solve the food problem. Students at university need a lot of money because they have worry about eating delicious food to solve hunger. And from now on if I work, I can learn experience for the job which I want or when I get a job in the future, I will be able to do better than now through my part-time job experience. 3. Are you having a hard time working a part-time job? Sure, even though I want to work a part-time job, there is something that is hard. Many students do it to earn only money, but some students do it because they need to make money to solve their registration fees, living expenses, and food expenses. They are not free to choose to work in these situations. So, there is a setback to their studies or life. And sometimes rude customers come, and they are irritated with me with no reason. Some fight and a few have even vomitted in the room. So, I have to clean it. Coin karaoke is hard because of the rude guests.

Cafe staff and student of mokwon University Jeon Yoo Jin

1. What do you do at your part-time job at a café. Many people think that café work requires a license or a career, but everyone can work at a café even if you don’t know how to make coffee. You can start café work through learning how to make coffees or drinks. Actually, if I get orders from customer, I make coffee just like a recipe. However, it is different according to customer’s taste. 2. Did you learn or feel anything from your part-time job? I learned socialization through my part-time job. When I work in the café, I have to work hard because I’m not doing this alone. I work with my co-workers and my boss at the café. So, I know we need communication for work. If we don’t help each other, they could be hurt because of me. And when I work in the café, I feel interested in becoming a barista. Through these things, I must think and should choose the one that I want or interested in for my future job when I decide what I should do for my future job.

I interviewed just three college students who have part-time jobs. Their answers look similar but there are some differences. After interviewing them, I realized why they need their part-time jobs. I was very surprised when I think many other students are living like them too. They have to think about their grades, but they chose to work part-time jobs together. They said it is very meaningful that they can buy and chose what they need or want. When I interviewed them, they looked very happy and delighted. With these reasons, many college students have part-time jobs in Korea. Maybe they have different reasons why they do it, but we could know one thing for certain. They work not just for money, but also for determination and opinion.

Welcome to Mokwon!

Jeon Yujin Cub-Reporter [email protected]

Beautiful cherry blossoms and a hot summer are our upcoming 2019. Over time, new students have adapted to school to some degree so there are pros and cons to school. I asked some students a small amount of questions about Mokwon University through interviews.

◆ Dept of vocal music, Park** Q : Tell me briefly about the pros and cons of Mokwon University. A : First of all, the pros are that the campus is pretty, such as flower beds, great playgrounds, and cherry blossoms. Also, many events are promoted by the student council, allowing freshmen to use various food trucks and see celebrities. On the basis of a music college, professors are kind and dormitory facilities are good, so you can use them conveniently by creating a clean environment. The cons are that the food in the student cafeteria is not delicious and the music college facilities are not good; the room soundproofing is not good, and the piano is not good either. Also, air conditioning and heating don’t working properly. Q : What is there to improve at Mokwon University? A : I'd like you to pave the walk ways. I think we need to improve them quickly because we are afraid of slipping on rainy or snowy days. Secondly, I want you to make a separate smoking room. There are people, who smoke in the school pavilion, and I don't know how it was designated as a smoking room, but it's harmful to the classmates who are sitting there to rest without smoking.

◆ Dept of English Language and Literature, Sin** Q : Tell me briefly about the pros and cons of your department. A : First of all, professors teach students passionately and seniors care a lot about freshmen. The shortcoming is that the structure of the school is so long that it is inconvenient to move from class to class because of the wide gap between the buildings.

Q : If you have a picture that represents your department, what is it? And why? A : This picture is a picture of the English Language and Academic Seminar. The reason why I chose this photo is because it has our own characteristics, and everyone works hard as one.

30 | MOKWON CHIMES INTERVIEW

Q : If you have a picture that represents your department, what is it? And why? A : This picture is the design needed to map a class. Our main goal is, 'How can you teach students easily?' Because of this, I think we need it to do well in class. So, we are currently learning how to draw up a map while giving a class demonstration since we were freshman.

◆ Dept of English Education, Kim** Q : Tell me briefly about the pros and cons of Mokwon University. A : I think 3+1 system is the biggest advantage of going abroad to study during school. You can naturally experience foreign culture while interacting with local students at a foreign university. And when I went as an exchange student, my acquisition score was recognized as either a major or a liberal arts degree, so I have the advantage that my graduation is not delayed unlike a leave of absence from school or language study abroad. The downside is we must take the liberal arts course of understanding Christianity, even though we are not Christians. Chapel also complains that graduation is possible only when forced.

Q : What is there to improve at Mokwon University? A : The e-roll call or Mokwon university comprehensive information system does not work properly and errors are generated, so I hope you can improve this point.

Q : What is there to improve at Mokwon University? A : I wish I could paint the old school building to look much cleaner on the outside.

Apply for M-Supporters!

Lee Soonji Desk-Manager [email protected]

If you are an international student who wants to meet a Korean friend, or you have trouble adjusting to school, apply for a program called M-Supporters! Or Korean students can apply for M-Support if you want to meet and help foreign friends at Mokwon! There are many more foreign students at Mokwon than you think, so this program will provide you with a great opportunity to experience various cultures. Today, we’re lucky to have someone who has experienced this program.

Self-introduction Hi, my name is Minkyung Kim, majoring in English Education because of my dream. Reasons for applying for M-Support In fact, I've experienced how hard it is to study in other country. I applied for this because I wanted to help those who are having difficulties of language and psychology as much as I could. What kind of activities do you do? First of all, foreign students must take the TOPIK before their graduation. So, if your mentee has not passed the TOPIK yet, you will help them study Korean. You can also help a mentee to follow their classes well. Therefore, the more classes you take with a mentee, the more likely you are to be adopted as a mentor. For me, my mentee is majoring in English Literature since there were no overseas students in my department. I often study English with my mentee and help her study Korean. During the examination period, I usually help her prepare for major exams and prepare for discussion. Sometimes I revise her PPT s and scripts focusing on composition and grammar. Who is your mentee? The student I met was Wu Hao from China. Duration I participated in M-Supporters from September to December in the second semester of 2017. Every new semester, M-Supporters is on the notice board on the school web page, so if you are interested in it, go for it next semester. What did it mean to you? I think a lot about how to teach if I meet an international student when I work at a school later. The Place and Time Because places are only available at our school, I usually used the English Clinic Room in Campus Town or the school library. (You can't do M-supporters activities outside of school). I recommend English Clinic Room more because I have to take a picture every time we meet. (The smartphone hangout in there makes it easy to take pictures.) If the class you take is the same as the class your mentee takes, that time is recognized as working hours. It's because you can help mentee to follow the class well. The staff in charge will explain the details about this part if you become a mentor. You can meet every time you and your mentee agree to meet. I tried to meet Mentee often when she was free regardless if it was a weekday or the weekend. Anything You Want to Tell If you have an overseas student in your department, you have a good chance of getting picked. Because the mentor not only studies Korean, but also studies the mentee's major, the school assigns the same department students as much as possible to mentees. For foreigners to make Korean friends is often not as easy as you’d think. They are often associated only with friends from the same country as they are. If you were an exchange student, you would be able to empathize. I think it would be great if you open your mind to them through M-supporters program.

M-supporters is really rewarding if you want to help and meet exchange students. Your little help can give great hope to foreign students who are having a hard time in Korea.
