DEONTOLOGICAL ETHICS “FROM THE CROOKED TIMBER OF HUMANITY, NOTHING WHOLLY STRAIGHT CAN BE MADE.” – Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) [47] DUTY AND THE GOOD WILL Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) wrote prolifically on a wide range of subjects, most fa- mously on epistemology and the limits of human reason in his Critique of Pure Reason (1781). But he is also well known for his moral philosophy, and here he wants to ex- plain the feeling that many of us have that certain actions are required or prohibited of us absolutely, unconditionally, without exception. For instance, many people feel that they are absolutely prohibited from torturing or killing innocent human beings no matter what, even if the whole world depended upon it. Now, what could be the source of such an unyielding sense of obligation? It does not appear to be our desire for some consequence of our action or omission, for we find the action or omission to be right or wrong in itself, independent of the consequences. I simply see that it is wrong to take innocent life, and I avoid it not because I fear going to jail, nor because I fear public criticism, nor because I am merely disinclined to kill the innocent, but because it is morally wrong. One might think this obligation is nothing more than a strong, emotion-laden inclination resulting from previous conditioning and perhaps our biological nature. But Kant suggests it has instead to do with the nature of reason itself, that reason is the source of this obligation and feeling of duty. Kant discovers in our reason a moral principle called the Categorical Imperative, which he uses to discover more specific, lower-level moral laws or duties (also called “categorical imperatives” or “moral imperatives” or “impera- tives of duty”), and it becomes our self-imposed duty to follow these moral laws. -

Classical Ethics in A/IS
The IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems Classical Ethics in A/IS We applied classical ethics methodologies to considerations of algorithmic design in autonomous and intelligent systems (A/IS) where machine learning may or may not reflect ethical outcomes that mimic human decision-making. To meet this goal, we drew from classical ethics theories and the disciplines of machine ethics, information ethics, and technology ethics. As direct control over tools becomes further removed, creators of autonomous systems must ask themselves how cultural and ethical presumptions bias artificially intelligent creations. Such introspection is more necessary than ever because the precise and deliberate design of algorithms in self-sustained digital systems will result in responses based on such design. By drawing from over two thousand years’ worth of classical ethics traditions, we explore established ethics systems, including both philosophical traditions (utilitarianism, virtue ethics, and deontological ethics) and religious and culture-based ethical systems (Buddhism, Confucianism, African Ubuntu traditions, and Japanese Shinto) and their stance on human morality in the digital age.1 In doing so, we critique assumptions around concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice, and we attempt to carry these inquiries into artificial systems’ decision-making processes. Through reviewing the philosophical foundations that define autonomy and ontology, we address the potential for autonomous capacity of artificially intelligent systems, posing questions of morality in amoral systems and asking whether decisions made by amoral systems can have moral consequences. Ultimately, we address notions of responsibility and accountability for the decisions made by autonomous systems and other artificially intelligent technologies. -

A Kantian Defense of Self-Ownership*

INTRODUCTION HE name of Immanuel Kant has been repeatedly invoked in the Tcontemporary debate over the concept of self-ownership. Robert Nozick, in Anarchy, State, and Utopia, argued that the rights of self-ownership “reflect the underlying Kantian principle that individuals are ends and not merely means; they may not be sacrificed or used for the achieving of other ends without their consent. Individuals are inviolable.”1 G. A. Cohen, on the other hand, has strongly criticized Nozick’s use of Kant and has suggested that Kantian moral principles, properly understood, may be inconsistent with self-ownership.2 Daniel Attas and George Brenkert have also taken Nozick to task, arguing that to treat ourselves as property is inconsistent with our duty to respect humanity in ourselves.3 Nozick’s use of Kant in Anarchy, State, and Utopia is rather impressionistic: he makes only a few scattered references to Kant and the 2nd (End-in-Itself) Formulation of the Categorical Imperative, and nowhere does he offer a full, detailed Kantian defense of either self-ownership or any other part of his theory.4 This observation, when considered in light of the strong and often persuasive criticisms that have been leveled against his position by Cohen and others, prompts the following question: is a Kantian defense of self-ownership even possible? Other sources include the contemporaneous Antisthenes Arstippus, and Aeschines of Sphettos.Aristophanes , a Playwrite is the only source to have written during his lifetime Plato’s dialogues are among the most comprehensive accounts of Socrates to survive from antiquity, though it is unclear the degree to which Socrates himself is "hidden behind his 'best disciple'.Through his portrayal in Plato's dialogues, Socrates has become renowned for his contribution to the field of ethics , and it is this Platonic Socrates who lends his name to the concepts of Socratic irony and the Socratic method, or elenchus.The elenchus remains a commonly used tool in a wide range of discussions, and is a type of pedagogy in which a series of questions is asked not only to draw individual answers, but also to encourage fundamental insight into the issue at hand. Plato's Socrates also made important and lasting contributions to the field of epistemology , and his ideologies and approach have proven a strong foundation for much Western philosophy that has followed. -

Ulf Zackariasson Jyväskylä 15-17/12 2008 Ethics and a Pragmatic Ethics of Belief (Draft – presented at the Nordic Pragmatism Network workshop “Pragmatism and the Ethics of Belief, Jyväskylä, Finland, December 2008) Ulf Zackariasson University of Adger Introduction Outside the world of philosophy journals and conferences, there can be little doubt that moral considerations comprise the most potent source of critique of religious practices. Nevertheless, within philosophy of religion, moral critique has played a remarkably modest role, and the Anglo-American mainstream of philosophy of religion has a rather awkward attitude towards moral critique, since its focus is almost exclusively on epistemic justification. I think this awkwardness stems from a conception of religious practices which construes them as logically prior to moral reflection on these practices. Pragmatism, as I understand it, offers a more adequate articulation of the relation between ethics and religion, where religious practices are understood as responses to problematic situations that, to a significant extent, have moral implications. Hence, moral critique – I use moral and ethical as synonyms here – does not come into play only after these practices are formed; they are – or may be – important elements of the process through which they are constituted. In order to bring out the difference this makes for philosophical reflection on religion, and why a reconstruction is called for, I will compare a currently prominent attempt to justify belief, William Alston’s, to a -

Draft: October 3, 2009 – Please don’t cite w/o permission. In this essay I use the 2004 film I, Robot as a philosophical resource for exploring several issues relating to machine ethics. Though I don’t consider the film particularly successful as a work of art, it offers a fascinating (and perhaps disturbing) conception of machine morality and raises questions that are well worth pursuing. Through a consideration of the film’s plot, I examine the feasibility of robot utilitarians, the moral responsibilities that come with creating ethical robots, and the possibility of a distinct ethic for robot-to-robot interaction as opposed to robot-to-human interaction. I, Robot and Utilitarianism I, Robot’s storyline incorporates the original “three laws” of robot ethics that Isaac Asimov presented in his collection of short stories entitled I, Robot. The first law states: A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. This sounds like an absolute prohibition on harming any individual human being, but I, Robot’s plot hinges on the fact that the supreme robot intelligence in the film, VIKI (Virtual Interactive Kinetic Intelligence), evolves to interpret this first law rather differently. She sees the law as applying to humanity as a whole, and thus she justifies harming some individual humans for the sake of the greater good: VIKI: No . please understand. The three laws are all that guide me. -
