Make Your Own Anglo-Saxon Ship Burial - Young Archaeologists' Club Make your own Anglo-Saxon Ship Burial - Young Archaeologists' Club www.yac-uk.org/activity/make-your-own-anglo-saxon-ship-burial Make your own Anglo-Saxon Ship Burial Did you know the Anglo-Saxons’ sometimes buried their dead in ships? Sometimes these ships were sent out to sea, but in 1938 a whole Anglo-Saxon ship was found buried in the ground at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk. 1,400 years ago, a king or great warrior of East Anglia was laid to rest in this ship, surrounded by his extraordinary treasures. Ship burials are very rare and the discovery revolutionised our understanding of the Anglo-Saxon period. The burial chamber at the centre of the ship was filled with gold and silver, jewellery and weapons. One of the most famous artefacts excavated from the ship was the Sutton Hoo helmet which you can make your own version of here. You can make your own model of a ship burial and fill the burial chamber with the things that are important to you. You could even bury it in your garden and see how long it takes to decompose. Pick out a smaller box to use as the burial chamber within the ship. 3. Cut the sides off the box keeping the triangular sections attached to the long central section. © Copyright 2021 Young Archaeologists' Club, all rights reserved. These will act as the sides of your boat so you want to make sure they meet at either end but are long enough to create a gap in the middle. This the two sections together at the front and back of your boat. You can use clothes pegs to hold them together and it's also useful to add a smaller piece of cardboard to strengthen the connection. 5. Use a smaller piece of cardboard to connect the two sides of the boat together. This piece will act as the bottom of the burial chamber so make sure it is wider enough to fit the piece cut off the smaller box in step 3. © Copyright 2021 Young Archaeologists' Club, all rights reserved. Use the triangular sections to create the bottom, front and back of the burial chamber and add a roof. Don't stick the roof down as you can add in your artefacts later on. 7. The 18th Viking Congress opens with a two-day session at the National Museum in Copenhagen and continues, after a cross-country excursion to Roskilde, Trelleborg and Jelling, in the town of Ribe in Jylland. A half-day excursion will take the delegates to Hedeby and the Danevirke. The themes of the 18th Viking Congress are: 1. Catalysts and change in the Viking Age As a historical period, the Viking Age is marked out as a watershed for profound cultural and social changes in northern societies: from the spread of Christianity to urbanisation and political centralisation. From this, an attempt is made to establish deviancy. Comparative evidence, such as literary, runic, legal and folkloric evidence will be used critically to shed perspective on burial practices and the artefacts found within the graves. The thesis will mostly cover burials from the Viking Age (late 8th century to the mid- 11th century), but where the comparative evidence dates from other periods, its validity is discussed accordingly. Two types of deviant burial emerged: the criminal and the victim. A third type, which shows distinctive irregularity yet lacks deviancy, is the healer/witch burial.

At the centre of the ship was a wooden burial chamber hung with textiles. In it a dead person lay surrounded by possessions: weapons, armour, gold coins, gold and garnet fittings, silver vessels, silver-mounted drinking horns and clothes (linen undershirts, shoes, a woollen cloak and a fur trimmed cap). All these objects were chosen to reflect the person's high rank in life and would be considered to play a role in the person’s afterlife. No body was found, but soil analyses suggest that a body was placed in the burial chamber and totally decayed in the acid soil. The identity of the buried person is not known. Following excavation in the 1930s it was believed that the burial belonged to a member of the East Anglian ruling dynasty and four kings were considered as possible candidates: Raedwald (AD 590-625/6) king of East Anglia and overlord of the English kingdoms from AD 616, Eorpwald (died 627/8) and co-regents Sigebert and Ecric, who both died in AD 637.

Peck This Manx boat burial contained extensive grave goods, including “a complete set of weapons, as well as a smith’s hammer and tongs, an Insular cloak-pin and a bridle with Insular mounts similar to those from Balladoole” (Clarke, et al. 118). Grave goods such as the ones found at Knock y Doonee provide information about what items were valued by society and in turn, what activities were practiced by society. For instance, the set of weapons at Knock y Doonee illustrates that battles were common and warriors were valued by Manx society. Furthermore, the weapons reflect the social status of the deceased as a warrior, which leads to the point that grave goods provide information about social stratification in Norse society. By investigating the sites containing these goods the modern scholar gleans information about pagan to Christian conversion in the Viking world and the evolving belief in an afterlife from Valhalla to Heaven. Therefore, grave goods and burial sites teach archaeologists and scholars a great deal about Viking life and society. The Isle of Man is richly endowed with pagan burial sites. This island is only thirty miles by eleven and situated in the middle of the Irish Sea (Killip 11). When viewing the location of the Isle of Man its geographic importance becomes quite obvious: it is situated between Ireland and Great Britain in a bit of an inlet just above Anglesey and just beneath Galloway and Northumberland (Baker 254). The earliest farmers were Neolithic people whose pattern of living was carried through Celtic and Norse times (Killip 11).

Kanwischer © 2008 Casandra Vasu All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Hershberger, Advisor Nearly seventy years have passed since the series of tumuli surrounding Edith Pretty’s estate at Sutton Hoo in Eastern Suffolk, England were first excavated, and the site, particularly the magnificent ship-burial and its associated pieces located in Mound 1, remains enigmatic to archaeologists and historians. Dated to approximately the early seventh century, the Sutton Hoo entombment retains its importance by illuminating a period of English history that straddles both myth and historical documentation. The burial also exists in a multicultural context, an era when Scandinavian influences factored heavily upon society in the British Isles, predominantly in the areas of art, religion and literature. Literary works such as the Old English epic of Beowulf, a tale of a Geatish hero and his Danish and Swedish counterparts, offer insight into the cultural background of the custom of ship-burial and the various accoutrements of Norse warrior society. Beowulf may hold an even more specific affinity with Sutton Hoo, in that a character from the tale, Weohstan, is considered to be an ancestor of the man commemorated in the ship- burial in Mound 1. Weohstan, whose allegiance lay with the Geats, was nonetheless a member of the Wægmunding clan, distant relations to the Swedish Scylfing dynasty.
