Research Paper Why is the Common Grackle becoming less common? Noah P. Horsley 1 and Michael P. Ward 1,2 1University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2Illinois Natural History Survey ABSTRACT. Despite a generalist life history and a widespread distribution, the Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) has declined by more than 58% since 1970. In Illinois, where this study was conducted, the current rate of decline is 7.03% annually. We hypothesized that low reproductive success in intensely agricultural areas is driving population decline. To test this, we quantified the nesting success and post-fledging survival of Common Grackles in central Illinois. Over a 2-year period, we monitored 188 nests and tracked the survival of 53 fledglings. Our estimate for nesting success of 0.622 (95% CI: 0.549-0.695) was much higher than the literature average of 0.267. Similarly, although post-fledging survival had not been estimated previously for Common Grackles, our estimate of 0.617 (95% CI: 0.471-0.764) was relatively high compared to that of other songbirds (range: 0.23-0.87). The most important factor influencing these estimates was ordinal date, which had a negative relationship with both nesting success and post-fledging survival. These results suggest that reproductive success is not the primary driver of population decline in Illinois. -

This study provides first data on reproductive characteristics of this species in the Mediterranean, important for management and stock assessment. For this purpose a total of 550 individuals ranging from 19.9 to 45.8 cm in total length were collected monthly in a period of one year using trammel nets. Sex ratio of males to females was 0.62:1. The estimated length where 50% of analysed individuals were sexually mature was 30.98 cm for females and 32.98 cm males. The peak value of gonadosomatic index was recorded in November and continued throughout the December, indicating the highest spawning activity. This period is characterized by presence of oocytes with migrated nucleus and yolk coalesces in ovary and spermatozoa in testes. -

ABSTRACT Fringillidae finches form a subfamily of songbirds (Passeriformes), which are presently distributed around the world. This subfamily includes canaries, goldfinches, greenfinches, rosefinches, and grosbeaks, among others. Molecular phylogenies obtained with mitochondrial DNA sequences show that these groups of finches are put together, but with some polytomies that have apparently evolved or radiated in parallel. The time of appearance on Earth of all studied groups is suggested to start after Middle Miocene Epoch, around 10 million years ago. Greenfinches (genus Carduelis) may have originated at Eurasian desert margins coming from Rhodopechys obsoleta (dessert finch) or an extinct pale plumage ancestor; it later acquired green plumage suitable for the greenfinch ecological niche, i.e.: woods. Multicolored Eurasian goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) has a genetic extant ancestor, the green-feathered Carduelis citrinella (citril finch); this was thought to be a canary on phonotypical bases, but it is now included within goldfinches by our molecular genetics phylograms. Speciation events between citril finch and Eurasian goldfinch are related with the Mediterranean Messinian salinity crisis (5 million years ago). Linurgus olivaceus (oriole finch) is presently thriving in Equatorial Africa and was included in a separate genus (Linurgus) by itself on phenotypical bases. Our phylograms demonstrate that it is and old canary. Proposed genus Acanthis does not exist. Twite and linnet form a separate radiation from redpolls. -

Inventory of Tidepool and Estuarine Fishes in Acadia National Park

Kling and Adrian Jordaan School of Marines Sciences University of Maine Orono, Maine 04469 Report to the National Park Service Acadia National Park February 2008 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Acadia National Park (ANP) is part of the Northeast Temperate Network (NETN) of the National Park Service’s Inventory and Monitoring Program. Inventory and monitoring activities supported by the NETN are becoming increasingly important for setting and meeting long-term management goals. Detailed inventories of fishes of estuaries and intertidal areas of ANP are very limited, necessitating the collection of information within these habitats. The objectives of this project were to inventory fish species found in (1) tidepools and (2) estuaries at locations adjacent to park lands on Mount Desert Island and the Schoodic Peninsula over different seasons. The inventories were not intended to be part of a long-term monitoring effort. Rather, the objective was to sample as many diverse habitats as possible in the intertidal and estuarine zones to maximize the resultant species list. Beyond these original objectives, we evaluated the data for spatial and temporal patterns and trends as well as relationships with other biological and physical characteristics of the tidepools and estuaries. For the tidepool survey, eighteen intertidal sections with multiple pools were inventoried. The majority of the tidepool sampling took place in 2001 but a few tidepools were revisited during the spring/summer period of 2002 and 2003. Each tidepool was visited once during late spring (Period 1: June 6 – June 26), twice during the summer (Period 2: July 3 – August 2 and Period 3: August 3 – September 18) and once during early fall (Period 4: September 29 – October 21). -

Suffolk County Council, BSA The Benjamin Tallmadge Historic Trail Suffolk County Council, BSA Brookhaven, New York The starting point of this Trail is the Town of Brookhaven parking lot at Cedar Beach just off Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai, NY. Hikers can be safely dropped off at this loca- tion. 90% of this trail follows Town roadways which closely approximate the original route that Benjamin Tallmadge and his contingent of Light Dragoons took from Mount Sinai to the Manor of St. George in Mastic. Extreme CAUTION needs to be observed on certain heavily traveled roads. Some Town roads have little or no shoulders at all. Most roads do not have sidewalks. Scouts should hike in a single line fashion facing the oncoming traffic. They should be dressed in their Field Uniforms or brightly colored Class “B” shirt. This Trail should only be hiked in the daytime hours. Since this 21 mile long Trail is designed to be hiked over a two day period, certain pre- arrangements must be made. The overnight camping stay can be done at Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island. Applications must be obtained and submitted to the Suffolk County Parks Department. On Day 2, the trail veers off Smith Road in Shirley onto a ser- vice access road inside the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge for about a mile before returning to the neighborhood roads. As a courtesy, the Wertheim Refuge would like a letter three weeks in advance informing them that you will be hiking on their property. There are no water sources along this hike so make sure you pack enough.
