Preprints (www.preprints.org) | NOT PEER-REVIEWED | Posted: 10 August 2020 doi:10.20944/preprints202008.0236.v1 Abstract The marine red algae Asparagopsis armata is an invasive species which competitive advantage arises from the production and release of large amounts of toxic compounds to the surrounding invaded area, reducing the abundance of native species. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of this invasive seaweed on marine invertebrates by exposing the common prawn Palaemon elegans and the marine snail Gibbula umbilicalis to the exudate of this macroalgae. The seaweed was collected and placed in tanks, for 12 hours, in the dark in a 1:10 ratio. Afterwards the media containing its secondary metabolites was collected for further testing.

  • Unusual Bloom of Tetrasporophytes of the Non-Indigenous Red Alga Asparagopsis Armata in the Northern Adriatic Sea
ISSN: 0001-5113 ACTA ADRIAT., ORIGINAL SCIENTIFIC PAPER AADRAY 58(1): 53 - 62, 2017 Unusual bloom of tetrasporophytes of the non-indigenous red alga Asparagopsis armata in the northern Adriatic Sea Martina ORLANDO-BONACA*, Borut MAVRIČ, Domen TRKOV and Lovrenc LIPEJ Marine Biology Station, National Institute of Biology, Fornače 41, 6330 Piran,Slovenia * Corresponding author, e-mail: [email protected] The tetrasporophyte of the non-indigenous red alga Asparagopsis armata (the Falkenbergia stage) is considered to be established in Slovenian coastal waters. However, until 2016, it was found only in low coverage and in few localities with hard substrata. The paper reports a recent bloom of these tetrasporophytes in the mediolittoral belt of the Bay of Piran, where thalli of this red alga overgrew the articularted coralline alga Corallina officinalis. The sites affected by this large expansion of tetrasporophytes of A. armata should be regularly monitored in the future, in order to point out which environmental factors are responsible for such phenomenon, and to formulate proper conclusions on the status of this non-indigenous alga in the coastal area concerned.

Its cylindrical, bare main stolons (1mm wide, 200 mm long) are irregularly branched, with bushy fronds. Its lower branchlets are long and have hooks that resemble harpoons. 2013-2021 © IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation. It can be distinguished in its gametophyte stage by the crozier-shaped, The gametophyte stage is pale purplish-red, hook-like, modified branches that it forms. quickly degenerating when removed from the Other species that look similar water and becoming distinctly orange. It can be found growing as an epiphytic alga on other algal species, especially Corallina sp. The tetrasporophyte stage is a brownish-red, filamentous, branched alga, forming dense cotton-wool-like tufts 15 mm in diameter. Usually this alga develops on infralittoral rocky bottoms from the surface to a depth of 40 m. Reproduction It is able to reproduce sexually and has a two-phase (heteromorphic diplohaplontic) life cycle with two main morphologically different stages during its development. The gametophyte phase, which was the form named Asparagopsis armata, has either male or female organs; this is followed by a microscopic carposporophyte middle stage, and then by the tetrasporophyte phase, which was originally named Falkenbergia rufolanosa.

E-mail address: [email protected] (X. Turon) Running title: community-wide effects of invasive algae in MPAs Highlights Hard-bottom communities dominated by invasive algae were studied with metabarcoding A size-fractionation method is developed for the metabarcoding of complex samples A modified primer set is used for the amplification of a COI fragment A semiquantitave abundance index is proposed for statistical analyses Results show effects of canopy-forming invasive algae on the underlying communities Abstract We analysed with multigene (18S and COI) metabarcoding the effects of the proliferation of invasive seaweeds on rocky littoral communities in two Spanish Marine Protected Areas. The invasive algae studied were Caulerpa cylindracea, Lophocladia lallemandii and Asparagopsis armata. They are canopy-forming, landscape-dominant seaweeds, and we were interested in their effects on the underlying communities of meiobenthos and macrobenthos, separated in two size fractions through sieving. A new semiquantitative treatment of metabarcoding data is introduced. The results for both markers showed that the presence of the invasive seaweed had a significant effect on the understory communities for Lophocladia lallemandii and Asparagopsis armata but not for Caulerpa cylindracea.

Globally, seaweeds represent a significant part of these non-indigenous species (NIS), with 407 introduced algal species. Furthermore, the presence of NIS seaweeds has been reported as a major concern worldwide since the patterns of their potential invasion mechanisms and vectors are not yet fully understood. Currently, in the Iberian Peninsula, around 50 NIS seaweeds have been recorded. Some of these are also considered invasive due to their overgrowth characteristic and competition with other species. However, invasive seaweeds are suitable for industrial applications due to their high feedstock. Hence, seaweeds’ historical use in daily food diet, allied to research findings, showed that macroalgae are a source of nutrients and bioactive compounds with nutraceutical properties. The main goal of this review is to evaluate the records of NIS seaweeds in the Iberian Peninsula and critically analyze the potential of invasive seaweeds application in the food industry.
