MARI PAJALA Government of Finland/David and Nancy Speer Visiting Professor in Finnish Studies at the University of Minnesota Dr. Mari Pajala will provide us with a fascinating glimpse into the development of television broadcasting in Finland after World War II. Finnish television, much like Finland itself, was situated between the West and the East during the postwar era. The first television broadcaster in Finland was a commercial company (unusual in Europe). Finnish television featured American entertainment from the beginning. At the same time, Finnish television collaborated with television organizations in socialist Eastern Europe. How did this in-between position shape Finnish television culture? Mari says, “I was born in Vaasa and spent my childhood and school years in Oulu, Ylivieskä and Kajaani. My parents, who are both from a small place called Kälviä in central Ostrobothnia, thought it was good not to be too stuck in one place! However, after moving to Turku for University, I’ve ended up living there ever since.” She now holds a position as a senior lecturer in Media Studies. Her PhD thesis explored how ideas about Finnishness have developed around the popular television show, the Eurovision Song Contest , which began in the 1960s. She is interested in how contemporary television programs interpret Finnish history and how Finnish media represent gender and class. Her current research is on connections between Finnish television and television in socialist countries during the Cold War era. This is the country of Nokia, a pioneer in the field of mobile phones and advanced telecoms technology, as well as a home- land of IRC and Linux, or many computer games like Angry Birds, etc. In short, in this information and new media age, Finland has had many achieve- ments in the ICT field, and has an advanced information society. In fact, just after World War II, Finland took a path of vigorous progress in almost every field of social life. In 1987, i.e. still before the period of the high technology development, David Arter wrote: The pace of economic modernisation in post-war Finland has been unique. In no other European democracy has the progression from an essentially agrarian society through a period of accelerated industrialisation to a predominantly service economy been compressed into a mere four decades. (Arter 1987: 227) The Finnish miracle took place despite the war devastation of the country (especially in the North) and substantial war reparations paid to the Soviet Union. In the beginning, the economic situation was desperate with no inter- national help at hand, the people even faced starvation. Moreover, the Soviet Union was against Finland’s participation in Marshall Plan (Rajaniemi 1999: 336–337).

To exemplify its importance, I will give a little anecdote. I was an exchange student in Helsinki during the 2014-2015 academic session and, knowing no one in an unfamiliar city can be both daunting and affect one’s enjoyment of being in that place, fortunately, it also presents an opportunity. An opportunity to meet new people, experience new things and an opportunity to learn. What is essential in this process is networks, ones which facilitate the meeting of new people. Now being an an exchange student, I was thrust into an ‘exchange bubble’ where you meet many people from many countries- it is fun, yet, not fulfilling. I arrived in Finland wanting to meet Finns, learn a little of the language and be involved in the student organisations, something which is at the very heart of Finnish student life, however, it was difficult, near impossible- not any fault of the Finnish student organisations but fault of my own- ‘I can’t just turn up and expect to be welcomed, can I?’ This is where CISSI came to my rescue, I met the first ever chair of CISSI who dragged me to a CISSI event, a sitsit- one which sought to bring Finns and internationals together to facilitate interaction and create the opportunity of friendship. After a few more events, I had built numerous relationships with Finnish students who subsequently invited me to their organisations events.

I was Waara, which came from V äära which was my great- grandparents' name, Autiovaara, Johan and Anna. They homesteaded here and I live on their property now. I was born in Raymond, Washington, just up the road, closest hospital at the time, March 9th of 1944. So I've lived here my entire life. I've lived the last 21 years on my great-grandparents' homestead, which was always my dream. It was kept in the family. It was very difficult during the Depression years. A great aunt who was widowed just raised potatoes and did whatever she could to keep the property intact. So her daughter was left with it and her daughter had no children and knew that I had always wanted to live there. A.     October/ Lokakuu 2018 An Author’s Journey Diane Dettmann For October, we welcome Diane Dettmann, a Minnesota writer whose lifelong love of writing has led her to explore many directions in storytelling. Diane Dettmann began writing stories on small tablets as a child. She graduated from the University of Minnesota and received her master’s degree from Hamline University. She taught many years in the Saint Paul Public Schools, where she also facilitated staff development training in literacy instruction. Diane coauthored Miriam—Daughter of Finnish Immigrants , a memoir published in 2008 about her grandparents settling in the 1920s in Embarrass. In 2011 she released her memoir, Twenty-Eight Snow Angels: A Widow’s Story of Love, Loss and Renewal . This book is endorsed by professionals from the national grief foundation, Open to Hope, in Palo Alto, Calif. and Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, Ariz., and continues to offer hope and support to others. In 2012 Diane took the leap to historical fiction. Courageous Footsteps is set in a World War II Japanese internment camp in the United States. It reveals a piece of America’s history seldom told.
