From the President I recently experienced a great sense of history and admiration for early Spanish and Portuguese navigators during visits to historic sites in Spain and Portugal. For example, the Barcelona Maritime Museum, housed in a ship yard dating from the 13th century and nearby towering Christopher Columbus column. In Lisbon the ‘Monument to the Discoveries’ reminds you of the achievements of great explorers who played a major role in Portugal's age of discovery and building its empire. Many great navigators including; Vasco da Gama, Magellan and Prince Henry the Navigator are commemorated. Similarly, in Gibraltar you are surrounded by military and naval heritage. Gibraltar was the port to which the badly damaged HMS Victory and Lord Nelson’s body were brought following the Battle of Trafalgar fought less than 100 miles to the west. This experience was also a reminder of the exploits of early voyages of discovery around Australia. Matthew Flinders, to whom Australians owe a debt of gratitude features in the June edition of the Naval Historical Review. The Review, with its assessment of this great navigator will be mailed to members in early June. Matthew Flinders grave was recently discovered during redevelopment work on Euston Station in London. Similarly, this edition of Call the Hands focuses on matters connected to Lieutenant Phillip Parker King RN and his ship, His Majesty’s Cutter (HMC) Mermaid which explored north west Australia in 1818. The well-known indigenous character Bungaree who lived in the Port Jackson area at the time accompanied Parker on this voyage. Other stories in this edition are inspired by more recent events such as the keel laying ceremony for the first Arafura Class patrol boat attended by the Chief of Navy. -

During this visit I had a chance to visit the Osborne shipyards and get an update on Collins class and enhanced availability as well as to get a briefing and discussion with senior Australian officials involved in shaping the new build submarine program. -

Today, hydrographic survey continues to play a key role as a public good in activities that maintain and enhance Australia’s national authority, influence and well-being. Tomorrow, on 21 June 2008, the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) will celebrate the third annual United Nations World Hydrography Day. The theme for the 2008 celebrations is …. Capacity Building, a vital tool to assist the IHO in achieving its mission and objectives. In keeping with this theme, today we take the opportunity to recognise Australia’s hydrographic contribution to capacity building 2 of 7 in our region, and to celebrate the achievements of Australia’s own Hydrographic Service. Capacity building is a key priority for the IHO. This year’s World Hydrography Day celebrations highlight the IHO’s commitment to supporting technology and skills transfer between established and newly-developing Hydrographic Offices in the interests of enhancing global navigational safety, maritime trade and protection of the marine environment. To support this priority, the IHO has defined a three-phase development strategy to build national hydrographic capacity worldwide. -

Coastal Command in the Second World War
AIR POWER REVIEW VOL 21 NO 1 COASTAL COMMAND IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR By Professor John Buckley Biography: John Buckley is Professor of Military History at the University of Wolverhampton, UK. His books include The RAF and Trade Defence 1919-1945 (1995), Air Power in the Age of Total War (1999) and Monty’s Men: The British Army 1944-5 (2013). His history of the RAF (co-authored with Paul Beaver) will be published by Oxford University Press in 2018. Abstract: From 1939 to 1945 RAF Coastal Command played a crucial role in maintaining Britain’s maritime communications, thus securing the United Kingdom’s ability to wage war against the Axis powers in Europe. Its primary role was in confronting the German U-boat menace, particularly in the 1940-41 period when Britain came closest to losing the Battle of the Atlantic and with it the war. The importance of air power in the war against the U-boat was amply demonstrated when the closing of the Mid-Atlantic Air Gap in 1943 by Coastal Command aircraft effectively brought victory in the Atlantic campaign. Coastal Command also played a vital role in combating the German surface navy and, in the later stages of the war, in attacking Germany’s maritime links with Scandinavia. Allan du Toit Canberra, October 1996 Ill Abstract This subthesis sets out to study the place of the aircraft carrier in Australia's post-war defence force. Few changes in naval warfare have been as all embracing as the role played by the aircraft carrier, which is, without doubt, the most impressive, and at the same time the most controversial, manifestation of sea power. From 1948 until 1983 the aircraft carrier formed a significant component of the Australian Defence Force and the place of an aircraft carrier in defence strategy and the force structure seemed relatively secure. Although cost, especially in comparison to, and in competition with, other major defence projects, was probably the major issue in the demise of the aircraft carrier and an organic fixed-wing naval air capability in the Australian Defence Force, cost alone can obscure the ftindamental reordering of Australia's defence posture and strategic thinking, which significantly contributed to the decision not to replace HMAS Melbourne. -

From the President Welcome to this edition of Call the Hands, our last in the Society’s 50th anniversary year. It includes a variety of short articles which are connected through various themes including the RAN’s first ship, HMAS Parramatta (I) and her namesakes. Another connection is the shared anniversary of the Naval Association of Australia (NAA) celebrating its 100th anniversary. Accordingly, we acknowledge our many readers who are members of the NAA. Their service in the RAN (past and present) has contributed to the history of Australia’s great Navy. The Society’s close connection with Parramatta (I) stems from the not insignificant project to recover her bow and stern sections from a Hawksbury River mudflat. These sections are now prominently displayed in Sydney. Additional information about this fascinating project recently came to light and has been published in the December Naval Historical Review now being distributed to members. We also feature a recent NAA commemorative service for HMAS Parramatta (II) and recognition of the commissioning commanding officer of HMAS Parramatta (III), Rear Admiral Guy Griffiths RAN, Rtd. Many interesting and sometimes obscure naval stories remain untold. Occasional paper 97 is a good example. It is the story of a small party of sailors landed in Arnhem Land from HMAS Fremantle (I) in 1958 to observe Japanese pearl fishing operations. This story was shared by Eric Deshon with Australian National Maritime Museum’s oral history volunteers and published in the ANMM’s volunteer newsletter ‘All Hands’ in June 2018. Recording historic events on canvas has been a traditional art form which continues today. -

Moloney 2015 Abstract Investigation into underwater archaeology began, inevitably, with the investigation of shipwrecks. For decades whole divisions of our discipline have focused on studying the intricate characteristics and mechanisms involved in the propulsion, construction, and manipulation of ships themselves (e.g. nautical archaeology). However, as Mortimer Wheeler noted, “the archaeologist is digging up, not things, but people” (Wheeler 1954: 13), so how do we extract information about those crewing these ships from shipwrecks? In this study I examine the spatial organization of ships in an effort to reconstruct the social dynamics of shipboard society.
