Poor Ronnie

By RON WALLACE Breakfast with Paul Henderson my day’s highlight

Had breakfast with Paul Henderson last week...literally. Henderson, the hockey player who scored the winning goal in the series of the century against the Russians, so long ago I don’t even want to think about it, was the guest speaker at the second annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, and I was invited to join the table. Little did I realize at the time that Paul, who told a sell- out audience at DiNardo’s that he has been diagnosed with cancer, would be sitting beside me for breakfast. I owe that to the organizer of the event, Aurora’s Bob Callow, who invited me to the table. Oh, how the memories flowed about that day. It was September 22, 1972, and I had a whole bunch of people in my basement on Tecumseh Drive, the first home I ever owned in my life...thanks to the late Bob Montgomery. I won’t tell you how much it cost... With a little help from our friends, we have been able to identify all the people in the photograph, which My daughter Aurora was three years old, and she was is Aurora Council and staff taken in the early 60s. We were right on the four people we identified when there. we first ran this photo, two weeks ago, in the November 2 issue. In the front row are Councillor Jean When Henderson scored the goal, I called the Aurora Moffat, Reeve Clarence Davis, Mayor Keith Nisbet with Councillor William Stoddart. In the back row, left Banner office - since that’s who I worked for at the time - to right, are, Bill Johnson, town treasurer; George Sinclair, Tom Manning, Alf Child, Jack Williamson, Vic and told them to lock the doors and take the rest of the day Jones and Town Clerk Al Wood. Thanks to all the people who helped fill in the blanks. off. I had no right to do that, but it seemed like the thing to do at the time. Letter to the Editor Henderson had scored the winning goal in the two games prior to this one, but they had been forgotten. The photo below was taken the day of the winning game and goal.
