Brantford Harlequins Rugby Football Club Season Preview

The 2017 Season is officially on - kickoff at Home this Saturday - and with that the Quins are both a win out of first place, and a loss out of last. And on goes the fight. Mckelvey and Howard have kept up a good winter paddock at Goodrow Stables and the horses have been training Rocky Russian Winter style. A first inning rain delay meant an extra 2 weeks left in the stall for good measure. Expect both teams to be hot to trot on Saturday. The captaincy moves up 2 jerseys and an age grade to the other McDonell brother. Expect a lot of plays to run through #13 again - and people named McDonell to score tries. The front row has expanded - while still looking trim. Matt Lindsay takes a summer vacation to open up some game time for Cullen, Big George and Johnny Evans - while Mahar looks to rotate across to the hooker position to give him more energy to explore creativity in his loose play. Yikes. The Van Horne's come off a bulking cycle and straight into the season, and are being pushed hard by intern Killboy Francis who has been hitting bags in the basement all season. The back row will see a good mix of young and old, with a side of Bouk - expect a lot of rotation on either side of McKelvey. Halfbacks, we have a few of 'em. Schouten, Piatek, Boeyenga and MacArthur can form a multiple of 9/10 combinations - we'll probably test all of them just for fun. And the backline just continues to roll, some new additions to show off beside the usual stalwarts - the whole group is versatile enough that they'll all see time somewhere. The goal for the season is to continue to raise the bar - and to do so faster and higher than the other team on the park. There's 80 minutes to do it, so lets get it done. Week 1 at stoney creek

The Harlequins Fields are closed to the Senior teams this weekend, so we've had to make a quick flip of fixtures and will be playing away at Stoney Creek this weekend, and we've moved to a Friday Night kick off to boot. The 1's play Friday @ Saltfleet High School at 6:45pm. 2's will travel down next Tuesday May 16th for a similar night fixture. With weather wreaking havoc on the fields, the Quins are a little bit behind in their pre-season prep. Combine that with a last minute kick off change, and a few changes in availability, and game 1 is already a bit of a hill to climb. All of that being said, good teams win - no excuses. And with that, we'll start the season. The front row turns over a few spots, Boos and Bocock jumping up the depth chart to start off the 2017 campaign. finds himself back in the mix for the first game of the season. Having come off the bench in his last appearance for the Quins, Eric was 'really excited' to get the starting nod this week. Kid's been training like a professional since January just waiting for the opportunity. The 2nd row sees TVH push his twin out to make room for little brother Killboy Frances packing down to provide some stability in the

Lineup:XV First sets and nails around the park. JVH slides over to showcase his range in the back row, wearing 6, and likely full bunker gear on Friday. Casey Bouk splits his 14 jersey in half to take a run at 7 - expect him to secure a lot of ball for the backline. Graham Mckelvey is once again full value and holding onto that 8 jersey for another season. The backline looks so fast we had to slow it down just to read the names. Friday May 12 2017 Week 1 at stoney creek Will MacArthur earns a start at 9, and spins to Nate Boeyenga at fly half. This combo has been playing some exciting rugby as of late, and it will only benefit the guys outside them. The DJ Stevie P jumps back into the centre pairing, and no doubt there will be some battles over the radio as the Captain generally

prefers his country tunes. Good thing we've never known Hugh to

get angry in that 13 sweater. We picked the fastest wings we could find to keep up with the wheels on the 15 spot. Mundy and Newman won the foot race, and blew a little smoke of their own on the way. They'll slot in on either side of Rory McDonell. Get these guys the ball in space and get out of the way. The bench... is a bit thin due to some last minute availability requests. Ryan Blunt puts his hand up to be counted - kid looked in great shape at training on Tuesday and earns himself a spot on the bench just for looking the part. Mike Slifierz has also impressed early and will be brought in for 2nd row/back row cover. Connor Fitzsimmons got here in a hurry and it looks like he'll run his way off the bench at some point in the back three. McIssac, Walsham and Walker combine for utility back cover, while Adam Schouten will keep

Lineup:XV Second an eye on the situation and inject himself when needed. There's the team that starts the new season. It's the first of 14 games before we shuffle into the fall cup run - and it promises to be one of the best Friday nights of the season. Aside from a few last minute scratches from the team sheet,

the match day conditions were ideal. Cool and dry on a soft

surface, the stage was set for a good battle. The first half was a hot contest up the middle of the park, the Camels working some fast service to a pair of thick centers running hard lines. The DJ Stevie P countered with a tackle remix and the skipper McDonell turned up the volume knob. That beat set the tone for the match. It was a back and forth first half, both teams running the direct route to the goal line looking for holes that didn't yet exist. A few errant passes saw the Quins offense concede the better half of the whole field end and hand the Camels 7 points early. Will McArthur backed a bit of the talk as a response, finding a gap in the defense and making short work of a few more defenders before scampering over for a full 7 pointer. A bit of penalty trouble gave the Camels some more territory to which the home team took advantage, converting another 7, to which the Quins would only answer with an unconverted score before the half. Quins down 14-12. The 2nd half started at an absolute sprint and the pace never really let up. First out of the blocks was the Killboy Frances show, taking the opening kickoff about 60 meters knocking over several grown men in the process, and earning the Quins 7 points. And from there, the gates opened. The Quins backline reaped the rewards of the hard yards earned in the first half, exploiting gaps in the line and looking generally dangerous with each touch. The forwards linking up around the park, Howard and Blunt combining for a long range break that resulted in another backline score. At the end of the 2nd 40, the Quins would add 38

Report:XV First points to their side of the ledger. As impressive as the offense was to add that kind of margin, the Quins defense won them the game - Stoney Creek unable to score a single point in the 2nd half. 22 guys contributed over the course of the full 80 minutes, and at the final whistle it felt like a well earned 50-12 win. It was a great team effort, where everyone got dirty for the win. Schouten and Bouk stepped up to start in the back row - and just

Game shot to the top of the depth chart for the positions. It may have started a bit rusty, but the Quins have opened the season on the right course. However that statement is only as good as the next 80 minutes - and there is an entire club of people working to contest it. Friday May 12 2017 Week 1 at stoney creek

It's a big first game for a team that wants The Quins completed the sweep of the Stoney Creek Camels on Tuesday. Heavy traffic (not the Nolan Ott band) didn't help the warm up, and the line up required a bit of a re-shuffle. Almost like they had been preparing for it, the Quins showed up right from the whistle - Hagar looking dangerous - and took an early lead.

The Harlequins enjoyed the majority of the play, and slowly built a lead. : Seconds : The backs seemed to make some good yards, while the forwards rumbled along. 15-7 at the half. The Quins knew they had it in them to play the better rugby - it just required some discipline around the fringes and a bit of patience on offense. And with a bench full of fresh bodies all looking for a run, it didn't take long for the team to build on their lead. The game opened up in the 2nd half, and as the subs rolled in, the team rolled on. Great performances all around and a 23 man effort saw the Quins take the win 34- 17. Good start from the club, but there is still a lot of rugby to play, and a lot of teams pushing to lift the level.

Week 2 at Aurora Barbarians

The Brantford Harlequins fixture back in 1950 was a road trip into Toronto - to which the Jones brothers could only gather a team of four men. None the less, they made the trip down and played the fixture. By the end of the season, they won the league title.

This weekend the 2017 Harlequins make their first trip to Fletchers Fields with two full teams - and the same attitude. They're showing up to play. The opponent is also one of the 'Original 6' teams that competed that year - the Aurora Barbarians have a great history that is coming off a dominant decade in which they lifted the cup - and sent the Harlequins packing - more times than one cares to remember. They are also the last team to defeat the Quins - and based on early season reports - they are looking strong for the rematch. The 2's get the first crack, lead by captain Ryan Blunt - because we know he won't talk back to the referee. Just get back 10 and shut it. Better yet, stay out of the box. The front row is going to the guys who have been putting the miles in this week, Haydn Clarke and Buddha sit on either side of Justin Carrow at hooker. The 2nd row welcomes Steve Robinson to the mix beside the grizzled vet Jordan Yates in the engine room. Slifierz gets the nod at 6 this week as he has looked generally rangy around the pitch this week and will lead the line out. Ben Tinevez has been the best tackler in the side as of late, so it makes the most sense to run him at 7. Ryan 'Try of the Year' Blunt earns the nod at 8 - and expect him to factor into the next game as well. Adam 'Three Tries' Schouten moves back to his favored 9 position - he had the option to start at 7 for the 1's and decided this was the smarter move for the club. That's first class, grasshopper - I hope you're taking notes. Mitch McIssac will take advantage of that sweet service at the pivot. The centre combo is large and running straight lines. Jay Shaw puts down some wheels wearing

Lineup: XV Second his 3XL kit at the 12 position, while Jeremy Hennessey runs at 13. Shawzie's not gonna pass Jeremy, so go looking for ball where you can. The back three sees Justin Ferraccioli and his younger brother Lyndon Ray on the wings, with Janusz McNeill getting the nod at fullback. The bench is about as deep as the potholes in the driveway - Graeme Boos will factor into both games at some point, as will Ethan Hagar. Eric Lickers will be playing for a spot in the back row, though he also has some experience in the back line if needed, while Will Richardson will cover just about every position in the pack. The 1's start the first of a 4 game stretch looking to avenge a tough road loss in this fixture a year ago. The faces have changed, but the taste feels the same. The front row welcomes Big George Bocock at the Loosehead position, with Cullen Fawcett hammering down on the Tighthead side. With

Eric Howard back to Canada duty, and the coach coaching, we took the best Tighthead in the league and dropped him into hooker. Lets hope the ref sets a wide tunnel at the line out. The 2nd row features the most excited player on the field - Kolby Francis gets to pack down with his hero Tom Van Horne. Kid's gonna be all smiles at the set piece. The back row welcomes back Joe Yelle at 6, while Casey Bouk continues to tear it up at 7. Graham Mckelvey took the 8 jersey home again last week, so we'll let him keep it - everyone's too scared to ask for it back. Will McArthur is full of hops this season and he takes a run at 9 doing his best not to untighten his haircut. He works with The Dangles who is also running tight at 10. Dylan Mundy moves back to 12 to get closer to the collisions, he'll get a real good view of the lumber laid by the skipper, Hugh McDonell, who's only one pass away. The back three are good. Joe Newman. Good. Connor Fitzsimmons. Good. Rory McDonell. Yup.

Lineup: XV First Bench - based on game day form but here's the mix: Boos, Schouten, Slifierz, McNeill, Blunt, Hagar, Lickers, Carrow, Hennessey, McIssac. It's been a big wind up this week - time to let it go this weekend. Back to where it all started.

Week 2 at Aurora Barbarians

Big road wins by both teams today - the 2's ground out a late win by 2 points, while the 1's put up a big score line against a solid

opponent,

: scoring some great tries in the process. The 2's game was back and forth, the Quins taking an early lead on the strength of Ethan Hagar's performance, the youngster creating a few scores from long range and looking menacing all day. A few injuries early in the game saw the visiting team bench depleted early, with several players being shuffled around between positions for a good deal of the afternoon. It wasn't always pretty, but the Quins were able to pick their moments and play some great long phases of rugby. Captain Ryan Blunt looked generally dangerous all day, leading from the front. Schouten factored in big, his experience and willingness to play all positions well held together a 2's side that battled hard against a strong and deep home team. This set the stage for the rematch of the

GameReport fixture that was the low point for the Quins season last year. The Barbs have a history of strong home performances against the Quins, and with a line up bolstered with a few caps and some big bodies, the game opened up at a stalemate. Big collisions in the tight five set the tone, but a few miscues and some trouble in the set piece saw the Quins struggle to hit their stride early. Saturday May 27 2017

Week 2 at Aurora Barbarians

:

Will McArthur once again kick started the offense, winning a footrace to the line off some nice support play. Connor Fitzsimmons took advantage of his run on debut to score some absolutely great efforts taking the high ball, and looking nifty all day. Once the offense got rolling, the defense caught on as well. The Quins line speed caused big problems for the Barbarians. The commitment to the tackle looked good on all sides - the Quins found themselves having the luxury of an extra set of hands in open play, putting runners into space and converting line breaks to scores and looking clinical in doing so. In all, 9 tries to 2 and a generally fun day at GameReport the park. All four teams on the pitch played with the intended spirit and respect for the history. Week 3 host Oakville Crusaders

The Quins season is into full swing, this week marking the home opener and the second of four straight weeks of play. So far so good for the Quins, as the club has opened with road sweeps in the first 2 rounds, but hosting the Cru is never an easy feat.

Brantford's local nemesis, Oakville is always deep, and this will be a real test for a Quins team that has a few players taking precautionary rest this week. The 2's are off to a good start, a pair of road wins weren't comfortable, but good teams find ways to win. The front row welcomes back the water boy John Evans who's looking more mobile this season, playing beside Carrow and Hayden Clarke, the sets should look solid. The 2nd row looks tall, Zack White and Stephen Robinson combining to look more threatening in the skies than Jordan Kozina flying back from Egypt with his laptop. The back row sees Will Richardson out for a run, with Ben Tinevez looking comfortable in the 7 jersey for another week, and Mike Slifierz looking to make a push for 1st team contention running in at 8. The backline has seen a reshuffle, Braden Stubel will lead the team at 9 and control the play, providing service to Walsham Owen at 10.

Kyle Smith will make use of his hard nose defense at 12, while Andrew Pate will look to free up the outside backs from 13. Yanusz McNeill will run the show from the Lineup: XV Second fullback position, while the wingers look to conserve some energy, Paul Auzins taking a rehab run at 11 while Jordan Yates runs at 14.

Week 3 host Oakville Crusaders

The 1's are coming into this game on a roll, but remembering back to the 2016 semi final, they are prepared to go to work. The front row welcomes back Big George Bocock to the mix after a rest week last week. Casey Bouk continues his tear through the forward pack, moving to the hooker position,

on the other side of Cullen Fawcett who holds down the tighthead position for another week. The 2nd row goes back to TVH and his younger brother Kolby - younger brothers are so annoying, aren't they Tom? Good stuff. The back row sees Joe Yelle rocking a base tan like no other - kid's dark. Mac Attack hits the 7 and 8 jerseys, Eric Lickers putting his hand up to play with his friend Ryan Blunt, who looked dangerous for approximately 130 minutes of rugby last Saturday. Beauty Alert. Adam Schouten managed to win back the #9 shirt without incident at training this week - anyone who knows Schoutie knows how serious he takes his Harlequins. Expect a few tackles and at least one 'keep' from the halfback position this week. Nate Boeyenga continues as the in form fly half, and he'll be sure to make good use of the guys outside him. The centre pairing this week sees the skipper Hugh McDonell side step his way to 12 this week, an improvised move coming in the 2nd half last week seemed to see Hugh enjoying life closer to the ball, and it makes room for the sweet sweet step of Connor Fitzsimmons who takes over 13. The back three continues to turn over talent, Rory McDonell runs the show with Joe Newman on the open and Will McArthur shows his skill set and confidence on the Lineup: XV First blind wing. Subs: We'll see who's standing after the 2's play. We've got half a twin on stand by, and worst case Ontario, we'll strap boots to the coach and give him a nudge in the direction of the scrum. Hard to say the numbers are thin when the teams are full - I'm sure the 4 guys who took the horse and buggy into Toronto in '50 knew they still had the talent to win. It's going to take some serious effort to come out on top of the largest club in the province - but it's just what we've been training for. Week 3 host Oakville Crusaders

The 2's faced a very skilled and deep Oakville Crusaders team on Saturday - although the game started out as a good back and

forth, Quins mistakes saw them fall behind in the try count and the offense sputter in the 2nd half. To their credit, the Cru played some nice rugby and scored a few well executed tries. It's tough to beat an opponent that plays good rugby - and the visiting team just played more of it on Saturday. There were some great performances, and everyone on the park was adding to the effort. But the better team won. 32-17 was the final, and the first lost of the

season for the 2's.

Report:Seconds Game

Saturday June 3, 2017 Week 3 host Oakville Crusaders

The 1's opened the game determined to set the tone, memories of a tough semi final still lingering around the park - and they did so in style. From the kickoff, the Quins worked well

over 15 phases moving down the field and eventually scoring the opening try. The Cru defended well across the pitch, but the attack outlasted the tackles, and once through the line, the Quins cut deep, converting some long range scores from well supported line breaks. A few 'home' bounces along

: Firsts : the way, the first 33 points of the game were well earned by the home team - and 20 minutes on the Quins were in control.

Taking a commanding lead into the half, the Quins looked over the list of fixes, and continued out into the 2nd half applying all the pressure. Lots of hands helped carry the load on the day, and the bench ran out of subs. A great display of rugby, and a 67-

GameReport 15 win that keeps the Quins on a collision course with the Scottish - which just happens to be the 'Family Day' match up at home June 17th. It's going to be standing room only. Week 4 at Markham Irish

The Quins head down to Markham to take on historic rival Markham Irish. It's never been easy playing the Irish at the square, but the Quins are carrying a good deal of form heading into this weekend. The 2's are training well, and their game is starting

to take shape. The front row welcomes a new addition at hooker, Torti registering and putting his hand up and looking thick at training, will page the book ends Richardson and Clarke. Robinsondown and together in the second Yates pack row to add some size and stability in the sets. The back row is full of rucks and tackles this week, Ben Tinevez and Justin Carrow look to show their fitness at 6 and 7, while Paul Auzins works his way back to form at number 8. Adam Maahs makes his 2017 debut coming in on a pitch at scrum half. Welcome back Doctor. Walshamcount Owen will no doubt benefit from the Doc's surgical service standing in at out half. The centre combination welcomes back Braden Stubel on the outside with another new registrant Tyler Gagne lining up at inside. The back three looks fast, and rangey Kyle Smith can run like a 3rd flanker on the blind wing,

Lyndon Rey looks quick on the Lineup: XV Second open, with Curtis Brehn at Fullback. The bench will factor in early - Mike Wilson, Graham Boos and Ethan Hager will cover the bench for the 2's and 1's, along with whoever is left standing after the 2's battle. Week 4 at Markham Irish The 1's look to continue from last week's momentum, built on the back of a strong opening quarter against the Cru. The Front row looks thick in Cullen Fawcett and Graeme Mahar at loose and tight, and Casey Bouk hanging on for the ride. Mahar finally got his spine in line, but Dr. Maahs says we have to balance out the scrum force behind him, so naturally, we'll take the Dr's orders and go with the Twin

equilibrium of a balanced Van Horne Pairing at lock.

That frees up Killboy Francis to continue his season in beast mode at number 6. It's like the kid's playing Nintendo with Game Genie these days. It's not often you see a child knocking over grown men with such accuracy. Eric Lickers lost the cowboy bear ninja this week and will reluctantly retain the number 7 jersey based on form. Lickers loves the limelight, his face always shows up in video. Eric is wondering when you'll be back, Jordan.... hurry home... Ryan Blunt continues to skate in the Ovechkin Jersey, and looks good doing it. Will McArthur is back into the half back role on rotation this week, he's been looking to pick a fight all week so expect him to play with the usual chip, which means tight service to Nate Boeyenga at the fly half. The DJ Stevie P comes in to sort the kids out and get back to some retro tunes from the 12 jersey, and Hugh McDonell will line

Lineup: XV First dance his butt off to the scratchiest vinyl the DJ can serve from table 13. The back three is becoming the most competitive territory in the team, Joe Newman and Connor Fitzsimmons in on form and Rory McDonell a pretty consistent pick at 15. The bench - Hagar comes in as first back, Wilson the first forward, and we play from there. Schouten is acting coach this week, he will sub you off and take your spot himself if you don't play hard. We took it light at training this week to save the gas for Saturday, now you've got 80 minutes to burn it. Week 4 at Markham Irish

A bit less to be said this week as the view of the field wasn't great, but we do have some video. The 2's battled and lost 24-17 while the 1's controlled a back and forth and came out on top 43-24. Check out the 1's game here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9y_izqz62w

This sets the stage for the battle of the top of the table, Report: the only two 4-0 teams left in the draw - and fittingly, also a rematch of the 2016 Cup Final - The Toronto Scottish. The Quins have traditionally played well at home, and they're going to have to do it against a worthy adversary - the Scottish don't have a soft game

Game in them. So expect to take a punch.

Week 5 Host Toronto Scottish

Saturday June 17, 2017 Week 5 Host Toronto Scottish

Saturday June 17, 2017 Week 5 Host Toronto Scottish

No getting around this one, based on form in the last 2 seasons, these are the top two clubs in the province. This weekend breaks the tie. Enough said. The 2's start heavy with Buddha riding beside Dubicki at hook with Hayden Clarke bringing a pizza

to the Tighthead spot. The 2nd row sees White and Slifierz team up to showcase work rate around the park and some skills in the line out. Tinevez joins the Mac Attack in the back row, Lickers and Blunt down from the 1's line up on rotation. Expect Tackles, and a whole lot of Ryan Blunt. Will McArthur also drops into the 2's squad this week on rotation, though expect him to factor in to both matches. He's a pretty solid pick for the first score in both matches. He'll be spinning tight service to Mitch McIssac who steps back in as the starting 10. Jeff Kellam still looks fantastic, and as such earns himself a run in the centers. He's gonna have to show his outside centre pairing Pate a thing or two about getting a solid base tan. The back three will look to take advantage of some go

forward, Ethan Hager will be a favorite to score the Lineup: XV Second opening try, while Walsham Owen moves his attack out wide and will look to use his skills to find the ball in open space. Justin Ferraccioli comes back into the side this week after recovering from a swollen calf. The bench is large, so lets just list it. Richardson, Gagne, Carrow, Yates, Janus, Yates, Chisholm, Evans, Robinson and the VP. Week 5 Host Toronto Scottish

There can't be too many guys on the Scottish side that don't want a rematch of that McCormick Cup Final - safe to say this match sets up as one heck of a contest. It can go either way on the bounce of the ball - both teams have the ability to play a full 80 minutes and there's a full compliment on hand for this one.

The front row is putting up some large height to weight ratio numbers this week, Big George Bocock comes in thick, while Cullen Fawcett literally anchors the scrum. The coach always calls his own number in cup finals and on family day - so we'll let him 2. When you are playing as well as Kolby Francis, you get to pick your jersey. This week the kid wants to put the work boots back on and grind it out in the engine room. Tom Van Horne will keep him square from the other lock position. The back row comes in with some form - JVH comes in with some swell into the 6 jersey, while Casey Lineup: XV First Bouk is the on form forward running around the park at 7 this week. The number doesn't really seem to matter at this point. Mckelvey will be eager to get a few licks in early, after missing his last opportunity against the Scottish in 2016. Saturday June 17, 2017 Week 5 Host Toronto Scottish

Adam Schouten ran a tight offense in his last outing against the Cru, so he gets the nod at halfback, while Nate Boeyenga holds on as the in form fly half. The center's roll through another tight combination this week, the DJ back in at 12 pumpin Tennessee tunes at the captain's request,

Hugh McDonell leading the team from 13 again. The back three is becoming the hottest contest on the team, we've seen about 8 guys wear the strip back there, this week the top 3 on that list are Joe Newman, Connor Fitzsimmons and Rory McDonell. The bench welcomes back Joe Yelle from an extended vacation, looking dark as ever. Ryan Blunt looks about the opposite of that - and the more he plays in a day, the better he gets. Mike Wilson is going to be at the park coaching the kids, so we told him to strap up for some front row cover, along with Graham Boos. Paul Auzins makes his return to the side looking to earn his 2017 debut. It's a tough backline to crack this year, but Will McArthur and Ethan Hager have figured it out, both will

Lineup: XV First be drawn on for some youthful pace in the 2nd half. It promises to be a great day at the club, with rugby on display. We'll see you there.

Week 5 Host Toronto Scottish The Scottish showed up as promised, strength in numbers and looking well organized early on as their 2nd team opened

the game scoring a few tries early against the home team. The Quins first half offense sputtered, turning the ball over within a phase of each new possession. The visitors had a deep and experienced side, and showed why they rarely lose a match. The halftime score line was tilted heavily in the Scottish favor. The heat of the day started to weigh on the game, but some fresh legs coming off the Quins bench saw a 2nd half rally led by Liam Rose, who scored the first 2 tries of the game for the Quins. As the game opened up, the Quins looked more comfortable, and the offense built through phases and saved tackles for the defense. It was an exciting finish, with the Quins falling one score short of the

match, losing 31-24.

Report:Seconds Game

Saturday June 17, 2017 Week 5 Host Toronto Scottish The 1's took the field for their 4th game in 4 weeks, against the also undefeated Toronto Scottish. The game was a contest from the opening kick, the Quins made mistakes under pressure in their own end and after a

few attacking scrum resets, the Quins conceded 3 points. The game went back and forth on both sides, long breaks and sustained pressure snuffed out with unforced errors on both sides. The Quins were able to earn some territory late in the half, and after some good pressure from the set, a clearance attempt for the Scottish missed touch and allowed the fullback Rory McDonell to get ball in hand with space. That's a mistake that averages a five pointer - the on form 15 making short work of the defense and touching down and adding a kick for a 7-3 lead at the half. The fixes were simple enough, play the better rugby, stay out of the box, and in the 2nd half, the Quins stood in tough against a spirited Scottish attack. The Quins added a penalty and then the teams traded tries, man of the match

Connor Fitzsimmons factoring in to create a pair of scores in the 2nd half. Report:Firsts The defense held the Scottish to a season low 13 points, and rarely broke open without scrambling back fiercely. The last 10 minutes saw the Scottish threaten the Quins line on several occasions, but the defense stood tall, and in the end the Quins came Game out on top 24-13. The win puts the Quins in sole spot at the top of the table, and now have 2 weekends to rest up before a big road trip to third place Lindsay who are a challenging side at home. Carpenter earns record 77th cap in Canada's loss to Romania Brantford, Ont. native breaks Al Charron's record Shane Jones · The Canadian Press · June 17, 2017

Aaron Carpenter, seen in this file photo from the 2015 World Cup, became Canada's all-time caps leader during a 29-9 test match loss to Romania on Saturday. (Bertrand Langlois/Getty Images) A poor showing by Canada spoiled a milestone moment for veteran Aaron Carpenter. Carpenter earned his record 77th cap as Canada fell 25-9 to Romania on Saturday in its final test match before a Rugby World Cup qualifying series with the United States. "He's worked hard over the years for his country and he is a good man who has been a good servant to Canadian rugby," said Canadian coach Mark Anscombe. "It's just unfortunate that we put in such a poor performance on such a big game for him." Canada, ranked 23rd in the world, has lost five consecutive games to 16th- ranked Romania, including the game that knocked them out of the 2015 World Cup. "I thought it was a very poor performance and we didn't do anything we set out to do," said Anscombe. "That's disappointing. "I can't think of anything that I liked. If we want to give ourselves a chance against the United States, we have to execute better and be a lot more accurate in what we do. We're pretty poor at the moment." It was Canada's second test match prior to the series against the U.S., having lost to 12th-ranked Georgia by a 13-0 score last Saturday in Calgary. The Canadian squad will face the Americans in Hamilton on June 24 in the first leg of their 2019 Rugby World Cup qualifier. The second leg is July 1 in San Diego. Carpenter, a 34-year-old back-rower from Brantford, Ont., was a starter in the game, allowing him to pass Al Charron's Canadian record of 76 caps.

The Canadian team mainstay, who plays in England for the second-tier Doncaster Knights, made his national team debut against the U.S. in 2005. "I was just trying to focus on the moment and hopefully come away with a win," he said. "We didn't get the breaks today and I got a knock on the leg and had to leave the game. It was disappointing to leave the boys. I would have liked to have stayed out there the whole time. I respect Al so much. To beat his record is huge for me." Canada looked to have taken an early lead on Romania in the fourth minute on a try by D.T.H. van der Merwe, but it was overturned as he was ruled to be out of bounds. Gordon McRorie then missed a penalty kick from in tight to keep the game scoreless, but nailed a second attempt from farther out in the 12th minute to put the Canadian squad up 3-0. Romania surged into the lead in the 17th minute as Johannes Van Heerden broke free for a long run before setting up Viorel Lucaci for the try and the 7-3 lead. Romania's Otar Turashvili was tossed from the game for a red card and Canada nailed the subsequent penalty kick to make it 7-6 at the half. Canada allowed an early try by Fonovai Tangimana to start the second half, but soon cut into the lead with another penalty kick to make it 14-9. The Canadian side had another try called back and it spurred the Romanians, who added two more penalty kicks and another Tangimana try to put the game away. Week 6 at Lindsay RFC

It's been a long time since the Harlequins traveled to play against Lindsay RFC, the two clubs sharing a similar heritage and Jones tradition. Lindsay has had some individual and club success,

moving into the A division and knocking off some big opponents this season, as

well as featuring a side full of Blues players and the occasional Canada cap. Its ‘Big Brother' vs 'little brother' in the battle of the Jones'. Expect the little brother to come out swinging and put up a fight. Just ask Hugh and Kolby what it's like to be the youngest. It'll toughen you up

in a hurry. Lineup: Bus Trip

Saturday July 8, 2017 Week 6 at Lindsay RFC

With that in mind, the Quins ride solid form into this one and have a bus with 35 jerseys lined up and stuffed with talent to take on

the home team.

The 2's pack down heavy with Big George Bocock packing down with Hayden Clarke on the other side of Mike Wilson who puts his hand up to steady the sets - and possibly prep for a cup run??? The 2nd row of White and Slifierz looks to get mobile around the park and do some damage in the line out. The back row sees Carrow shift back to the flank, while Ben Tinevez continues to tackle well in the back row, and Tyler Mirco starts his 2017 campaign coming in at #8. The backline looks dangerous, the sweet service of Adam Maahs should give a platform for Mitch McIssac to compliment the halfback pairing - and allow the horses outside to have a run. The centre pairing of Blunt and Stubel should do some damage at the gain line, both players looking less unfit than they did last season. The back three has a lot of pace, Ian Chisholm will show off some flashy cleats, while Liam Rose continues on his 2 try per half pace on the open wing. That's 4 pies in a full 80 Liam, you set the pace... Andrew Pate enjoys a lull on the farm before

Lineup:XV Second apple season, so we'll let him run out at 15 this week. The bench features the rangey cover of Jordan Yates, and Lyndon Rey will get a run out wide in the 2nd stanza - while Brehn and Ferraccioli are may runs after picking up knocks at training Thursday. Neill and Piatek will also be close by in case there is a need for a 9/10 pairing from 2004. Week 6 at Lindsay RFC

The 1's come into this test at 5-0 on the season, and while it seems like the team is in a comfortable spot, there is no doubt everyone else is looking forward for a chance to make the Quins feel uncomfortable. The front row sets the platform, with Fawcett and Mahar the in form Scrummagers taking jerseys 1 and 3. Casey Bouk continues to impress around the park, and earns the hooker jersey for another week. The 2nd row features Tom Van Horne and his little brother Kolby Francis, who's 2017 play has earned him a look with the Ontario Blues. Older brother JVH moves out to #6 again to allow little brother more reps at lock. Jordan Kozina has cleared customs and once again starts his summer vacation - Jordan has traveled the world, but has found there is no place like home - in the #7 jersey for the Quins. Welcome home Jordan. Mckelvey earns the final starting spot in the pack at #8.

Lineup:XV First The back line is now into its 2nd week of rotation - Adam Schouten leads things off at #9, and should set the pace with his speedy service. Nate Boeyenga continues as the in form #10 and once again will be looking to ship the ball to the treats that lie outside him. Saturday July 8, 2017 Week 6 at Lindsay RFC

Will Kelly is welcomed back into the Quins line up after some time away with the Canada program, and will ease his way back in from #12. His catch pass skills had better be good, because the man in 13 is going to want some ball - Hugh McDonell drives the bus once again from outside centre. The back three goes back to a familiar look, Dylan Mundy coming back into the mix to join Connor Fitzsimmons who's still on man of the match form, and Rory McDonell at fullback who's just on.

We've got some quality coming off the bench this week, Steve Piatek handing his jersey up to give the kids some development reps means he'll be pacing back and forth in the coaches box until he picks his spot and unleashes a flurry of beats onto the pitch. Week 6 at Lindsay RFC The Quins took off on the longest road trip of the year, traveling high class via coach bus to the booming metropolis of Lindsay, ON. The 2's stepped off the bus as their warm up

for the game, and struggled through the opening 10 minutes. However after collecting themselves, the 2's were able to create a pretty decent rugby game. Led by man of the match Tyler Mirco, the hard charging lines of Blunt,

Stubel and Bocock, the boys began to roll. Report:Seconds

Though Lindsay was up at half, the game was a good back and forth. The kids stepped up, Chisholm and Rose both scoring tries in their 17th year, were a

bright spot in an otherwise chippy match that saw the home team take the Game final 48-27. It was always going to be a tough match travelling that far to take on a feisty home team, but there were some bright spots - when the boys want to play rugby, they can put together phases and score some nice tries. Consistency over 80 is still what needs work. Saturday July 8, 2017 Week 6 at Lindsay RFC The 1's on the other hand, have shown the ability to play the better rugby on a consistent basis for quite some time. Lindsay got a front row seat for this one, and watched the Quins backs play some

pretty awesome rugby right off the hop. The back three stole the show in this one, Rory and Fitz connecting on a series of long passes moving the ball wide and flooding the support channels en route to creating the ball wide and flooding the support channels en route to creating a brace of beautiful tries. For their part, the forwards took control at the line out, stealing half the Lindsay

possession and stuffing any efforts to go forward from the sets. Report:Firsts

The halftime score sat at 17-3, and with a bench eager to get a run, the Quins continued in control through the 2nd half. Lindsay tried to up the ante, looking

Game to show toughness on the wrong side of the whistle that earned them the opportunity to play short a man for a total of 20 minutes in this fixture. The Quins stayed on task, devoting their energy towards the task at hand - putting together a class performance against a tough home opponent. In the end, the backs ran downhill and the forwards pushed their way around en route to 6 tries a 32-20 victory. Week 7 Host Balmy Beach

Balmy Beach RFC may have come off the boil in the past season, but they have historically been a cup contender and a tough opponent at any point in the season. To add a bit of color to this one, it was Brantford who ruined the Beach's quest for the perfect season back in 2015, the loss to the Quins ended up being the only loss on their way to their

second consecutive McCormick Cup. It would be fitting to see

them return the favor.... The 2's look to make up for a soft performance last week, the line up bolstered by some extra bodies that always seems to be the way for the home fixture. The front row welcomes captain Casey Bouk back into the 2's side, leading from his favored Hooker position, on either side of Big George Bocock and Hayden Clarke, both holding form from last week. Jordan Yates will bring his leadership and consistency to the second row again this week, while Zach White looks to be a weapon in the line outs. The back row sees Curtis Brehn continue his chase from Wing to Wing Forward, joined by Slifierz on the other side of the scrum, while Ryan Blunt runs out at 8 and is expected to look spectacular as usual. Nate Boeyenga steps aside from first team fly half duties to get some reps in at 9 this week, the scrum half depth chart taking a haircut at the top with Schouten out for a lunar cycle or two. Nate pairs with Mitch McIssac who will look to attack with some smashing center's outside him in Stubel and Gagne who will no doubt be looking for a lot of ball. The back three welcomes back Janusz MacNeill to the mix at fullback, while Lyndon Rey and Ian Chisholm looked good enough last week to warrant another run on Lineup:XV Second performance. The bench is overflowing this week, so we'll expect a strong performance with fresh legs in both halves. Buddha, Mclean and Dubicki cover the front row, while Boos and Robinson will bring extra gas for the engine room. Will Richardson, Carrow and Torti will cover the back row. Kyle Smith and Alex Chan are in as back reserves, and we'll blow the dust off the original Big Shiny Tunes CD to see if it will draw out an old guy who can stretch out that 9 jersey so it fits baggy again just like Will Macarthur prefers. Expect the 1's to turn out switched on for this one, as they always enjoy a challenging home fixture and a chance to play for keeps. The front row always sets the tone of the match, and this week it's screaming large and in charge, Cullen Fawcett and Graeme Mahar hold form after a solid outing last week, and everyone will be excited to see Eric Howard make his 2017 debut on home soil, after a lot of practice. Line out and scrum stats were 100% before you got back Howie... The 2nd row goes through another reshuffle, by request, the VH twins are looking forward to listening to the sweet shuffle of Eric Howard's hips, so we'll let that crew play together as a five piece for old time sake. That means Killboy Francis will only have a short window of time to pout before he has to make tackles in the number 6 jersey. It's always fun to fill out the number 7 spot when this guys' in town, Jordan Kozina makes his 2017 home debut on loan from Egypt RFC. Graham

Lineup:XV First Mckelvey has been on form this season and since the 8 jersey seems to be tailored to fit a rock, we'll let him keep it.

Backs. This baby's got 'em. The kids Will get the nod as the halfback pairing this week, and to amp up their excitement, we've got the DJ Stevie P laying down the Raffi remix like it's naptime from #12. Just follow the sound of the beat Williams, the DJ will never steer you It’s all about the setup!!! wrong. The skipper will stand back and shake his head at that three man party, until a ball fires his way, at which point Hugh McDonell will put his one three stamp down firmly on the Beaches sand. The back three goes through rotation again this week, Dylan Mundy rotating over to the other wing, while the Doctor Adam Maahs gets his first run on of the year with the 1's on the open wing. At the centre of the rotation, Rory McDonell continues to be the more dangerous than lightning, wearing his trademark 15 jersey. We've got 3 fresh bodies on the bench this week in Newman, Mirco and Auzins, all of whom will factor in Lineup:XV First the 2nd half to change the pace and keep the energy up. We'll add in another 5 bodies based on form in the 2's game, but expect Boeyenga to Blunt the Bocock at some point. It's a beach theme this week, so wear your Hawaiian swag and come on out to get Lei'd. This club's open and in full swing.

Week 7 Host Balmy Beach Those that made it out to enjoy a home stand at the club were treated to sunny skies and fair weather - and a full sack of tries. The 2's rebounded after last week's loss to put up 40 points on the visiting Balmy Beach RFC - lead by 3 scores from outside centre Tyler Gagne, who scampered in a pair in the first half finishing his own line breaks from long

range. The Beach did put together some attacking rugby, and the game was a good balance on both sides, but the Quins came out on top 40-24 and comfortably ahead at the final whistle. The 1's started hot, a patient defense withstanding a solid beach attack early, allowing 3 points but then answering back with three scores in time, all well worked through quick flowing attack and good support in open play. Forwards and backs got involved, Mundy and Fawcett touching down, joined by McDonell and a few scores from Tyler Gagne who tallied 5 on the

Report:Firsts day. Everyone looked good on the day, including Killboy Francis who took advantage of his back row freedom to be a general menace on the park, knocking over grown men on several occasions and never complaining once.

Game The Beach lived up to their reputation, and threw the ball around enough to find their way over the line a few times, but in the end, they just couldn't keep pace with the Quins offense, 62 points on 10 tries, vs the Up the Beach!!! Beach's 26 on 4. Week 8 Host Stoney Creek

The 1's take the park against their nearest rival, Stoney Creek Camels. The Quins sent 4 players from the top of the depth chart off to represent the Ontario Blues at the Canadian Rugby Championship this week - good luck to

McDonell, Kelly, Francis and Howard - bring home the title!

The front row lines up large this week, Big George Bocock looking thick beside hooker Casey Bouk, while Cullen Fawcett moves back to his favored Tighthead prop position. The 2nd row welcomes back Paul Auzins for his first run on start of the year, joining Tom Van Horne in the engine room. Jordan Kozina holds down the open side flanker position, while Tyler Mirco serves up a large bucket of tackles from the blind side. Graham Mckelvey holds home at number 8. The backs have been running like they are on

Lineup:XV First fire this season, and they don't look like they will disappoint this week. Will McArthur continues as the in form scrum half, while Nate Boeyenga moves back to the fly half position this week. Dylan Mundy brings his thundering tackles back to the inside center positon, which will be a nice compliment to the lumber being thrown around by the captain, Hugh McDonell at 13. Saturday July 22, 2017 Week 8 Host Stoney Creek

The back three drops a few caps but doesn't lose a step, Connor Fitzsimmons steps in confidently to 15, with Adam Maahs and Joe Newman familiar options on the wings. Expect some fast rugby to be played by these guys. The bench was selected entirely on form from the Thursday night 2's game. Matt Torti put his body on the line making some big hits and scampering in for 2 scores, so he was picked. Ben Tinevez hit 3 rucks in a row on offense, and then made back to back tackles on D. Picked. Tyler Gagne's older brother had to pitch tonight, so we picked Tyler after watching him score 7 tries to date this week. Andrew Pate has never looked bad, so we'll count on that off the bench, while Graham Boos looked controlling in the sets, so he's in too. Walsham Owen has been playing himself back from injury, and looked dangerous enough to warrant closer inspection under the lights on Friday - and Zach White comes in as the next lock in the depth chart. Rounding out the bench is the DJ Stevie P, who's been a clutch

Lineup:XV First replacement since his run in the 2003 McCormick cup. Expect to see him razzle dazzle and provide some entertainment during and after the match. The forecast says warm breeze and sunny tries. It's a once a season event. Week 8 Host Stoney Creek What a game this turned out to be! This Friday night fixture started with the crowd, who turned out in numbers at Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre to watch the home team take on Stoney Creek in the local derby match. The game started out as a good back and forth, the fans treated to solid defense on both sides of the ball. The Quins had several opportunities that were stopped short by a scrambling Camel defense. The visiting team saw most of their possession stuck deep in their own end, and struggled to gain momentum against a vicious Quins defense. The pressure eventually gave way, with the Quins running in tries off a clever kick and some Report:Firsts fancy back line play from Maahs, Fitz and Newman. The center's battled tough, Stoney Creek featuring some size up the middle, but by the half, McDonell and Mundy had

Game established their ground game. The pack did their part, putting Creek under big pressure in the sets, allowing the home team to have the better run of play. Saturday July 22, 2017 Week 8 Host Stoney Creek The 2nd half saw the roster rotation continue, Tinevez and Torti coming out and looking strong in their first Premier 'caps', while Piatek came off the bench to look like some type of Space Wizard, ghosting the ball into gaps for his teammates to gather at pace. There were only a few tense moments in the 2nd half, the Creek ran a wave of phases at the Quins line for several minutes, denying entry like he was working the door during was Frosh week at Franks. The single twin then went on a 40 yard scamper to put the game back into the Creek end for good,

Report:Firsts and earned replacement by Zack White who played his way into the side after a solid Thursday outing. It was a final score from the Captain Hugh McDonell that

Game sealed it, in all a stellar effort from the home side that saw the Quins come out on top 50-0. At 8-0 they are at the top, but only just, as the Toronto Scottish continue to keep pace. There are still a few tough road games to play before the teams start positioning for the cup, and a lot of things happen as the season enters the home stretch. Week 9 Host Aurora Barbarians

Historical fact: The Harlequins last loss came at the hands of the Aurora

Barbarians back in May of 2016.

At the tail end of a 4 week stretch, and with summer in full swing, the Quins depth is once again tested. With a few players unavailable and a few more on the IR, these are some of the challenges of the season. With that in mind, the Quins will always attempt to play the better rugby. The 2's front row looks young but comes in well drilled in scrum club last week followed up by a solid outing against Stoney Creek. Graham Boos and Hayden Clarke bookend Dubicki and will look to set the platform early. Yates and White are the constant start in the 2nd row, and will continue on form. The back row is anchored by 8th Man Eric Lickers, who refuses to waive his 'No 1st team' clause this season. Will Richardson's work rate earns him the start at 7 and Curtis Brehn retains 6 on form. The doctor is in at 9 this week, Adam Maahs is down on rotation and takes some development reps at halfback. He'll spin tight service to fellow Gryphon Walsham Lineup:XV Second Owen, who takes a more senior role as fly half. The center's both dust off their cleats for their first run on since the trip to the Barbs in May, Shaw and Hennessey are back in the side building form for the fall. Expect a lot of crash with that rum. The back three is lead by Captain Mitch McIssac at 15, while Alex Chan finishes his summer internship with a start on one wing, and Lyndon Rey is the on form winger on the other side. The bench cover could use a few Richards, but does include Brad Johns, Nate Boeyenga and Evan Clarke.

Week 9 Host Aurora Barbarians The 1's work through rotation this week, and see a few players on debut after showing well last week. George Bocock plays his way into the Loosehead position after a solid scrummaging performance last week. He'll be matched with Cullen Fawcett who retains his position as anchor and the heaviest guy on the team. Kid can move like he's not even carrying the piano. Torti earns his first run on start at Hooker, after a solid reserve

performance last week.

The 2nd row sees Ben Tinevez earn his first start, getting back to his age grade days in the 2nd row, teamed with Tom Van Horne who comes off a hot 60 minutes last week. Casey Bouk lines up at 6 this week in an effort to get him involved in more phase play. He's in charge of grabbing a combo meal with a large soda to go with the fried chicken playing in the 7 jersey. The other team isn't going to know what hit 'em. Jordan Kozina steps into a larger role stitching both an 8 and the C to his jersey, coming in at 8th man and leading the team as game day captain. Will McArthur continues as the in form scrum half, taking good advantage of his field time to put together some exciting rugby. Just ask him. And he's never looked better than when he's spinning to the beautiful Will Kelly, who laces up for likely the final time in a Quins jersey this season. Expect the kid to play up to the occasion - and his hair will be perfect. With the captain taking some prescribed rest this week, Tyler Gagne steps into the outside centre role after looking up to the level off the bench the last 2 weeks. He'll be partnering with the mail main DJ Stevie P - who always delivers a solid beat for the kids to play to. It doesn't seem to matter who plays in the back three, they all play Lineup:XV First like they're on fire. We couldn't put out Rory or Fitz, so we'll let them burn at 14 and 15, while the 11 jersey sees Ethan Hager earn his first run on start with the 1's. Looks like he's already heating up. The bench cover will depend mostly on form from the 2's, but Boeyenga will factor in, and we'll keep negotiating with Lickers - kid's got a good agent. Speaking of contracts, Matt Lindsay picks up the option in his contract and starts his 2017 campaign a month early. 3 kids. Week 9 Host Aurora Barbarians

The two's took to the park coming off a good performance last week, but struggled to get things going this week. Some great individual moments from Walsham Owen and Alex Chan along with the slicing runs of Jay Shaw weren't enough to keep the momentum going on offense. Too many turn overs beyond the gain line

Report:Seconds resulted in a lot of defense for the home team, and it didn't go their way. The game was a good back and forth and the Quins were within a score at the half, but to their credit, the visiting Barbs wanted the win just a little more than the home side. At the final,

The one's kicked off with a mixed roster, having 3 new starts in the side and lots of guys coming on and off the park, you'd expect the continuity to struggle - but not on this day. Right out of the gate, the offense opened up, a series of forward smash followed by some draw pass that set the pattern for the afternoon. The

set piece was a battle with a mixed tight 5, but the forwards dug in, and provided a platform that allowed Fitzsimmons to run in 5 tries, the only thing more beautiful than his play was the 'summer off' mustache on his face. Ethan Hager benefitted from some of the backline magic, working to tally 4 scores in his first full game with the 1's. Piatek added one from deep range, and the rest of the team chipped in where they could - Kelly's boot almost as perfect as his hair, slotting some tough conversions with form. In all, 81 points were scored by the home side, who held up a solid

Report:Firsts defensive performance, only allowing 7 points against the run of play on a tough bounce of the ball against a scramble defense. Solid effort, and a well earned week off.

Week 10 at Oakville Crusaders

The 2's look to regain some momentum after a soft home outing last weekend. With a line up looking more consistent, and some solid work at training this week, the line up looks settled and ready to compete. The Veep Mclean leads things off at Loosehead this week, playing along Torti and Hayden Clarke

making up a solid front row. Boos and Yates come into the 2nd row this week to add some size and stabilize the set piece. Zack White moves to test his range from 6, while Will Richardson brings his work rate to the 7 jersey, and Braden Stubel makes his first run on in the pack wearing a big number 8 this week.

Zack Thomas looked good on debut last week, so we'll give him a run at 9 and see what he does with more ball. He'll be spinning to Mitch McIssac who comes back into the Flyhalf role, looking to keep the tap flowing for Jay Shaw and Adrial Rolston who's in on Vacation taking the bar stool next to Shawzie in the center's. The back three sees Lynden Rey in at fullback this week after looking dangerously fast in the summer heat. Janusz continues to hold form on the open wing, while Jeremy Hennessy gets a run on the blind wing. The bench cover is remarkably deep for August, Evan Clarke, Kyle Smith and Curtis Brehn are all in for forward cover, while Lineup:XV Second we've got a few extra jerseys we'll stuff for the backline. With a few on the probably list, anyone's welcome to get a game - bring your kit to the park! The 1's also come in with a bit of depth in a week that sees the Quins absent a few big names, but still looking like a strong side. The tight five goes twin less for the first time this season, as both Van Hornes are away doing 2017 Consolation Champions something tall. Paul Auzins moves back into the 2nd row, while Ben Tinevez holds his spot in the row based on form. The back row features Jordan Kozina playing with the Colonel's secret recipe, with extra crunch this week to cover both flanker positions, while Graham Mckelvey comes back into the line up after coming back from the IR - no doubt he'll have a little extra thud stock piled for the return. The backs are fast. Will Mac holds down form as the speedy number 9 spinning tight service to Boeyenga who only speeds it up to move to the guys outside. The DJ Stevie P comes in at inside centre again this week, while the Captain Hugh McDonell returns after a 2 week break to tear through the 13 jersey for 80 minutes. The back three showcases some depth with a few guys out of rotation, Newman, Mundy and Maahs will cover the back of the park and will look to put the finishing touches on a lot of great rugby.

The bench has a forward tilt, Lindsay and Neill will factor in if the humidity stays under control, while Lucas McIvor looks to get Lineup:XV First a run on to start earning a spot on the bus this fall. We'll take whoever is left standing at the end of the 2's for a run as this one stretches on. Should be a great day for rugby.

The 2nd half kicked off under much improved skies, but a miscue on a backline play run in the shadow of the goal posts saw an errant Quins pass hit the ground, snatched up by the

defense and carried over the line for another 7 points. The Quins were now down their largest regular season margin in the last 2 seasons. Enter a bit of punch off the bench, and a flip in mindset. The pack took over, taking a pushover scrum for 7 points. The backs rallied and put together some phases in open play to score to regain the lead. Kozina took a quick tap from Auzins to get over the line for a score, and as the game wound down, a kick through the line made it's way in goal, with Mundy winning the foot race to touch down and seal the win 44-27 for the Quins. No doubt one of the tightest games on record this season, and one that Report:Firsts the Quins will hope to take some valuable lessons as they move forward. As it turns out, no one cares how many games you've won or lost, or the names on the team sheet. Once the whistle sounds, it's Game the matching set of jerseys that plays the best rugby that wins the game. The Quins will no doubt look forward to an opportunity to get back on track against the Irish this weekend - it will no doubt be another challenge. Week 11 Host Markham Irish The 2's come off a solid effort last week and look strong with a core group ready to take on a tough Irish club. The front row welcomes back Will Richardson to prop, with Dubicki and Hayden rounding out the

starting front row. Zack White continues as the in form line out man for the 2's, and he'll be joined by Captain Jordan Yates in the engine room.

The back row welcomes back crowd favorite Ryan Blunt at 8, while Joe Yelle comes back into the side to start his fall season with a conditioning run at 7. Torti holds onto a jersey in the back row this week based on form. Zach Thomas looked good at 9 last week so we'll continue to run him there, he's throwing to the old catcher's mitt Jay Shaw who will no doubt look to pour and pass to the centre combo. Looking dangerous this week are Hennessey and Gagne at 12 and 13, expect these two to do a lot with ball in hand. The back three look electric, Rey at 15 with the form of Janusz growing each week to threaten on the open wing, and Gavin Jacklyn (3 kids) on the blind wing will no Lineup:XV Second doubt find the ball in some space. The subs - Boos, Buddah, Brehn, VP Mclean, Ferraccioli - and anyone else who brings kit.

Week 11 Host Markham Irish The 1's last 20 minutes of rugby was a lot more convincing than the first 60 last week, we'll see which side turns up to face the Irish. Never count the Quins out on home soil, but expect this one to go right down to the wire. The front row rotates again, Bocock

in at 1 and Fawcett over to 3, with Bouk staying in the middle. Josh Van Horne comes back into the side after some time on the IR, and he'll be joined by Paul Auzins who continues to build 2017 form. The back row stays consistent, Kozina leading the way from his trademark #7, while Mirco says 'yeah eh?' to playing a combo #6. Mckelvey takes the #8 Jersey home each week - still no one brave enough to take it away from him. The 9/10 continues to look speedy, Will McArthur and Nate Boeyenga both possess a full range of halfback skill sets, so expect the ball to move on wheels to the outside backs. The skipper calls his own number this week to move into the 12 jersey, moving Dylan Mundy out to 13. It should be an interesting combination. The back three welcomes back Connor Fitzsimons to the fold, kid comes in looking sharp after a rest last week. He'll run at 15, while the professor Dr Maahs is in on one wing, and the student Walsham Owen earns his first run on at the blind wing. Lineup: First XV The bench was a big factor last week, and should be again, Yelle, Boos, Blunt and Torti in to cover the pack, while Gagne, Janusz and Hennessey cover the backs. We may ask the ref from the 2's game to round out the front row if required. Should be a great day for rugby as we run through the thick part of the summer - last home stand of the summer season so get out for some sunny tries and a cold beer. It was a great way to wrap up the summer season at the rugby club this past Saturday, both teams came out on top, and played some

great rugby to boot.

The 2's put together a great performance, stringing together multiple phases on attack and supporting well on offense, and playing a measured defense that saw some big tackles made by the home side. Depth in numbers helped this week, as a near full bench came on to keep the Quins engines revved up. Big performances from Torti, White and Blunt, along with everyone in the front row were well complimented by a backline that looked dangerous all day. Hennessey and Gagne had the better run of traffic, with Janusz,

Report:Seconds Gavin and Lyndon all looking fast in open space. the A 27 Quins-17 halftime ending thescore continued to tilt the way of the home side, gamewith on top 54-22. A great win from the home side that saw a great mix of U18's and

Game old boys out for a run, with the core group of 2's continuing to build through the end of the season. Saturday August 19, 2017 Week 11 Host Markham Irish

The 1's took over at 3pm, and it only took a few touches to state their intent. Quick service got the ball to the Skipper, who power stepped his way through the line, only just held by the Irish defense, which wasn't enough to stop the offload to Mundy who made short work of the rest of the defense on his way to an opening score. The

forwards stepped up a big game this week, making some hard yards look easy and providing quick ball to a backline that seemed to be running down hill. Fitzsimons looked comfortable at fullback, covering ground and using the boot to great effect to keep the defense guessing. Walsham Owen made good use of his first start, looking fast in open space. It didn't take long before the scoreboard ticked over again, more good work through the backline with everyone looking to touch the ball. 30-5 at the half, and the Quins looked comfortable. The bench rolled in some depth, Hennessey and Janusz coming in looking the part for their first looks at 1st grade. Joe Yelle Report:Firsts made the return from summer vacation, and Ryan Blunt came back looking just as fit as when he left. Man of the Match Casey Bouk put his hand up for selection in the 2 jersey again, which could be a tough battle given that Canada hooker Eric Howard is back in

Game town. We'll see how that battle goes at training this week. The final on this one was 59-10, the Quins playing the better rugby for about the full contest. One more game in the August stretch, and they are all important from here on out. Saturday August 19, 2017 Week 11 Host Markham Irish Now you know why Coach gives him the 8 jersey! How

The pack will be representing the club in the annual fire truck pull this Saturday at 10am sharp at the Brantford Civic Centre. Expect a big showing. Supporters

welcome. Saturday is Rugby SaturdayDay Rugby is We're at Sunnybrook park in Toronto (1132 Leslie St, Toronto, ON M3C) to take on 2nd place Toronto Scottish in the tail end of the home and home series. A win gives the Quins their 2nd straight league title - lots to play for! Saturday August 26, 2017 Week 12 At Toronto Scottish The 2's are coming off a great team win last week, with some big performances from last week still in the mix this week, expect a good outing. The front row looks stable, VeeP Mclean and Clarke sit on either

side of a heavy Dubicki in at 2.

Boos and Yates add more size to the 2nd row and should stabilize the platform. The back row looks fit and fast, with White moving to a more rangey #6 after making some good smacks off the line last week, while Tinevez is welcomed back to the open side flank, and crowd favorite Ryan Blunt runs a 5k at #8. Kid's so fit we make him play 2's as a warm up for the next game. Adam Maahs, PhD comes in to spin a lesson at halfback, pairing with the biggest Stubel in Ontario at fly half. Pate was able to earn some time off the farm on Saturday, and looks in fine form - this is his season after all... we'll run him in the center's with Bradley Johns who looks to be getting used to running on Canadian soil.

The back three welcomes back Mitch McIssac to 15, while Lyndon Rey gets the blind wing spot, and Tucker Kelly earns his first run on with the men on the open wing. Bench looks like Evan Clarke covering the pack, and Janusz

The 1's start off heavy - coming straight off the truck pull, Cullen Fawcett takes the heaviest position, followed by Eric Howard and Graeme Mahar in jerseys 2 and 3. The 2nd row doesn't lighten up, but goes up a foot, the Van Horne twins come in eating

meat pies at 4 and 5. These boys just wanna scrum. The back row tilts a little bit as the numbers grow, as we stack Joe Yelle at the blind, while Bouk and the Colonel play a very low 7 and 8. Yeah Eight? Will McArthur is back to the books and Schouten is still on light duties so we shuffled the deck and bring in Boeyenga as the top 9 in active duty, which kick starts the beat and drops the mic to spin sweet, sweet service to the funky music man the DJ Stevie P featuring the Swizzard controlling the party from 10. The combination of the Skipper and the Sensei seemed to work last week, so we'll double down this week and see what they can do in the opening 2 minutes. The back three jacked it to level 4 this week, welcoming back Rory McDonell to the 15 jersey with Joe Newman back into duty at 11 and Walsham Owen winning his 2nd consecutive run on start at 14. The bench will start with Bocock covering the forwards and Janusz covering the backs, and we'll round

Big congratulations to the Quins boys who represented the club and won the first annual fire truck pull challenge to support the United

Way. Well earned victory boys.

The rugby on offer on Saturday was top notch - the 2's headed down looking like the original Harlequins group - several players arriving to join the side just before the opening kick off - but 15 guys started the game with a few subs to boot. The Scottish had the upper hand early, playing some nice rugby and executing well

through the backline to take a four tries to one lead into the half. Report:Seconds

The halftime chat - get busy playing rugby. The boys came out on point in the 2nd half, Zack White menacing in the line out, and Blunt and Tinevez charging some hard yards up the Game middle of the park. It didn't take long for the Quins to start rolling - and phase by phase the Quins clawed back. The boys were able to pull the game back to even with no time left to play, but the Scottish scored at the final whistle to take a 38-31 win. Well played by the Quins against the top team in the 2nd division. Saturday August 26, 2017 Week 12 At Toronto Scottish

The 1's stepped on the field looking well skilled and drilled, having looked sharp at training all week. But after rolling over their opponents by a comfortable 50+ points in each of the last 5 games, the

Quins forgot how to play when the other team hits back. The Scottish stood up to the Quins early attack, launching their own offense and looking threatening out wide. The scrum was a good battle all day, and both teams had to be spot on to win their own line outs. The backline was under more pressure than usual, and attacking runners were wrapped up to prevent offloads and seemed well covered as the ball moved wide. The Quins scored first, but the Scottish hit back. A pretty good back and forth in the first half was reflected in the score line, 12 all and now

just 40 minutes to decide which team was better. Report:Firsts

The 2nd half the Quins had their moments - players making line

Game breaks that didn't convert - the pack driving at the line but not making it over - backline continuing to feel pressure. The Scottish continue their pressure, strong well supported running lines that were met with the smack of the Quins defense.

Saturday August 26, 2017

Week 12 At Toronto Scottish

Both teams played back and forth, scoring twice more to draw level at 24 with minutes to play. In the final 4 minutes, both teams had opportunities inside the attacking zone to win the match, but in both cases, the defense proved up to the task, and at the final whistle, both teams collapsed leaving whatever was left on the park.

3 points earned from the tie are enough to clinch it -

Report:Firsts the Harlequins are the league champions for the 2nd straight season - setting themselves as the best team over a 5 month, 14 game season - with 2 weeks left to play. Game The tie ends the Harlequins win streak at 26 games - but brings their unbeaten record to 27 straight. As fun as it is to win, it's equally fun to face a challenge - and both teams have now set the stage for an epic rematch should these teams meet again in the fall. The bar has been set - and expect both teams to lift it higher for the cup. Saturday August 26, 2017 Results Marshall XV Second MarshallPremiership

Week 13 Host Lindsay RFC The 2's usually have a tougher time with numbers in the fall stretch, but this week it seems everything has fallen well into place. Starting things off this week - VeeP Mclean, who seems to be enjoying a good bit of rugby this season, hunkers down with Hayden Clarke and Graham Boos, a trio that has paired well this season.

The 2nd row welcomes back Zack White who has

been on form as of late, he joins Joe Yelle who's still on conditioning duties after a long summer break. Jay Shaw earns a run at 6 this week, his pesky style will suit well in the loose forwards, while Curtis Brehn earns the start at 7. Ryan Blunt anchors the pack at 8 Man. Adam Maahs continues to work on his form at 9 to provide some cover for the cup run, he pairs with Mitch McIssac who will look to distribute at 10. Beauty alert in the centre combo - Andrew Pate teams with Janusz McNeill to form a very elusive running pair. Expect these two gamers to perform. Lyndon Rey moves back to wing this week, and is joined by Zack Thomas on the blind wing. They're supported by Gavin Jacklyn (3 kids) at fullback. Fun fact, the fullback is older Lineup:XV Second than both wings added together. The bench is empty, but rumors of a Rawson, Kellam, Ferras reunion tour were picked up in the wind on Thursday night. Week 13 Host Lindsay RFC The 1's come off their first non-win in almost 2 years, and have had an extra week to let that feeling sink in. The team's official response will be posted over 80 minutes this Saturday. Leading the charge, Cullen Fawcett, who's been coming into form for the fall season. He bookends with Graeme Mahar who's still holding as the in form Tighthead. The hooker position is still a contest, Neill beating out Howard on the final set of Malcolm's on Tuesday to earn the spot. Howard takes the consolation prize starting for the newly formed Ontario

Arrows who face off against some pro-league opponents this weekend before heading back to the high performance centre in Langford. See you in October, #2. Tom Van Horne drops to the IR, luckily VH's come in pairs, so Josh will bring his presence to the 2nd row, with Ben Tinevez who plays his way back into the side based on form. The back row sees Auzins earn the run at 6 again this week, while Bouk is taken off leash to run at 7, and Mckelvey looks to add some thud at #8. The DJ Stevie P hit the play button on some party tunes as the backline welcomes back FCFF Adam Schouten to the team at his usual 9 position. He pushes Boeyenga back to #10, and the DJ Moonwalks one out to 12. And just like that, the Skipper Hugh McDonell settles back into his home at 13. Turns out he still has the tattoo. The back three shuffles once again, Fitzsimmons brings the sweet softness of hand combined with the smoothness of foot to paint a picture at 15. Joe Newman will do the opposite of smooth and brings his confrontational style at 11, while Dylan Mundy looks in form on the open wing. The bench is going to roll this week, as we start prepping for the home stretch. Matt Lindsay is available - and the crowd cheers. Lucas McIvor is available - as long as someone can hold his man of the match mugs while he plays. Joe Yelle is still gonna need fitness, so he's on 2 a day duty.

Lineup:XV First Ryan Blunt is already fit, so he's in as well. Zack White rounds out the forward cover. Adam Maahs comes in as utility back, and you know Pate's gonna play well so we've already picked him. Janusz McNeill has continued to build form and looks to earn some additional minutes, and Zack Thomas comes in as back three cover. Spots subject to form and fitness - but lots of room to play. The weather is spot on, and the team includes all the required parts for some great rugby. Saturday September 9, 2017 Week 13 Host Lindsay RFC

Reserve 19 Andrew Pate Reserve 23 Janusz MacNeill Saturday September 9, 2017 Week 13 Host Lindsay RFC It was a great day for rugby on Saturday - full sun without the heat,

soft ground that

played fast, and a hit out between two of the top teams in the province. Lindsay has held third place for the season, and rightfully so. They play a similar stylemajority and have of the a lot of good athletes. The 2's got off to a rolling start, VeeP Mclean taking some hard yards opening play for Ryan Blunt who mesmerized defenders with a gorgeous mustache en route to large gains down the park. The backs got rolling behind Man of the Match Mitch McIssac - with Rey and Thomas adding the pace through the line. Comfortable at half, the boys cruised to a 44-27 win. A well earned Report:Seconds victory, and some class rugby to boot. Should be a fun final weekend for Game the 2's this week!

Saturday September 9, 2017 Week 13 Host Lindsay RFC

The one's were looking for a challenge after the Scottish game, and it's fair to say, they found one in the

visiting Lindsay team. Right off the hop, the visiting team seemed up for the fight, the andQuins looked scored generally first in control, trading another score for a penalty goal, until a sustained Lindsay attack combined with Quins penalties saw the visitors pull to 12-10. The Quins got back to shape, earning back possession before the end of the half and stringing together

some well worked phase play to score in the corner. Report:Firsts

Game The 2nd half saw a more patient Lindsay attack, slowly working away at the Quins defense and putting the home team under pressure. The Quins stuck in and defended enough to earn back possession, and the pace of the scores turned lightning quick.

Week 14 At Balmy Beach The 2's have come on strong to end the season, a core group committed to training makes a difference, as does the talent now overflowing out of the 1st team jerseys. The Beach will no doubt provide a solid opponent, having depth and talent and a history of good rugby. The tight five welcomes back Ben Tinevez to

anchor the team at hooker, while Boos and Clarke pack down on either side as the in form Scrummagers. Jordan Yates captains the team from the engine room, while Joe Yelle gets another conditioning stint in preparation for fall rugby. The back row has Curtis Brehn back in form at the flank, joined by Ryan Blunt who narrowly missed out on 1st team selection this week, but will no doubt be 'free'd' at some point. Braden Stubel has matured this season, lowering his numbers to 8 this week to get some more ball in hand. Zack Thomas earns the start at 9 this week, and he'll throw to last week's man of the match Mitch McIssac at 10. Jay Shaw sets up the bar inside this week, making Scottish cocktails for Janusz

Lineup:XV Second McNeill. Same as regular cocktails, just harder to pronounce when liquored. The back three made some big signings this week, honorary 2's captain Casey Bouk makes a triumphant return to the side on the open wing, while Joe Newman brings his salty English wit to the blind. Lyndon Rey continues to collect meat pies running up the middle at 15 so we'll keep him there - kid needs the weight. The bench could use a few bodies. Put your boots in the car Kellam - you'll enjoy the rays and the rugby - and the lake breeze will do wonders for your flow. Week 14 At Balmy Beach The 1's are looking to complete the season without a loss - though a game on the road to the Beach in the fall doesn't sound like an easy task. The Quins have ended up on the wrong side of the score line on that pitch too many times to coast through this one. The front row sets the anchor, Matt Lindsay (3 kids) makes his 2017 starting debut stepping into the Loosehead side. That pushes Cullen Fawcett (still a kid) over to the Tighthead side - no easy feat to move this kid - and in between them we'll stuff a bucket of the colonel's extra crispy just so they can maintain mass between the sets. Welcome back to the front row, eh? The engine room gets a double shot of the Van Horne twins this week - if they're as angry at the beach as they were at each other at training this week, they're gonna make a mess #noIgetthetopbunk. The back row is the hottest contest on the park, the winners this week are Auzins, McIvor and Mckelvey. Pretty good group of rugby players wearing 6-8 this week and that should be a point of difference. FCFF Adam Schouten (2 kids) storms back into the 9 jersey after showing up on form last week. He'll fire lazers into the backline, and we've picked Nate Boeyenga to reel them in from 10. This should only speed up the centre pairing, skipper McDonell and Dylan Mundy looking to take the direct route this week and take names doing it like a country music dojo.

Lineup:XV Firsts The back three looks speedy this week, the professor Adam Maahs making a lesson plan while Connor Fitzsimmons and Rory McDonell just tighten up the hair and grease the wheels and then scream for the rock. Subs - coming from the 2's based on fitness and form. Saturday September 16, 2017 Week 14 At Balmy Beach

Reserve 19 Reserve 23 Saturday September 16, 2017 Week 14 At Balmy Beach The 2's had a tall task heading down to the Beach with only 16 players, on a hot September day.

The Beach opened with

some strong rugby played through a large tight five, earning the right to go wide and making some good inroads in taking a 3 score lead. However the Quins answered back, some solid running from Yelle and Blunt breaking out of their own end and creating a score from long range. The Quins scored again to bring the game back within reach at the half. The chat - keep playing rugby. The 2nd half saw the Quins start to tire in the sun, while the home team went to the bench and added fresh legs all over the park. The teams traded blows, but the Beach were able to throw the lion's share of the punches, en route to a 7 tries to 4 victory. Well done to everyone who played this season, lots of good rugby to build on next

year.

Report:Seconds Game

Saturday September 16, 2017 Week 14 At Balmy Beach The 1's took to the pitch looking to wrap up a season that has seen them roll through without a loss. Standing in the way was an old nemesis, Balmy Beach. Known for strong fall performances, both teams knew this match up was going to be a bit more than a regular season fixture. The first half saw the Quins come out on fire - first a penalty goal, followed by a pair of tries, before the Beach even knew what hit them. Just as the home team found a way to slow the offense, they were hit with wave after wave of Quins defense, punishing poor phases and making tackles well behind the gain line. Two more scores were on offer before the first half closed out, and the Quins went to the sheds looking like the best team in the province. The 2nd half saw that home team advantage, the entire Beach tight 5 came out running on fresh legs, Fighting and that back, gave the the game Quins moved some to trouble. even for a 15 minute period before the Report:Firsts advantage swung Beach. Full credit, the attack was smart and precise, and when the breaks game, they were finished on point. The Quins had done enough to win the game in the 1st half, but the Beach fought back to a Game respectable 41-29 score line. No doubt some things to work on from the 2nd half, but if the first half can repeat with consistency, the Quins will have some bigger rugby games ahead. McCormick Cup – Round 1

In what has become an annual fixture, the Quin's hit the road to take on the Ajax Wanderers. Worth noting, Ajax is the only Club to ever lift the McCormick up from the B division. That being said they face a daunting task having to face the number one seated and 30 game

undefeated Brantford Harlequins. Leading the team out of the sheds for the cup run is number one Cullen Fawcett who has absolutely earned the number turning out for two tries last week and continuing his form built throughout the summer. Eric Howard earn selection at the #2 position flying in for a conditioning stint this week before heading to Uruguay with Canada 'A'. Thanks for giving the starting hooker a rest this week, Howie. Only fitting that we throw in Graeme Mahar to round out this Trio. Hard to say there will be a better front row combination to take the field this year. The Van Horn's made it rain in the line out against a very competent Beach pack last week, and they retain 4 and 5 on form this week. Joe Yelle earns a start this week after filling a bench role for the better part of the summer. He's joined by Ben Tinevez who showed well at training this week and we will let McKelvey run for a quick Sprint at #8. Adam Maahs has played his way up the depth chart and he earns the run at 9 this week filling in for Adam Schouten who is unavailable. Expect the doctor to Lineup:XV Firsts be clinical. Nate Boeyenga has held on to the 10 jersey for the better part of the last two seasons and will continue to spend ball on wheels to the best back line in the province. Beauty alert in the center combo this week. Ryan Blunt earns the nod at number 12 while the skipper runs at 13.

Saturday September 23, 2017 McCormick Cup – Round 1

The back three is anchored by Connor Fitzsimmons who will control the show from the back at 15 and is flanked on the wings by Mitch McIssac and Janusz McNeill who have both shown well at training this week The bench will be coming in early

and often as we roll through subs to make sure we share the workload and give everybody a taste of Cup rugby. Matt Lindsay takes a break after a full 80 last week. Hayden Clark joints him for front row cover. The back row Trio looks like wholesale changes with Bouk, Mirco and Brehn all looking to add to the tackle count.

The DJ Stevie P will be in attendance largely in a coaching role but should he feel the need may drop the mic and pick up the beat for a few bars. Paris District High School gets represented this week by Zach Thomas,

Lineup:XV Firsts who finished his homework early enough two make the trip down to Ajax. After looking good with the twos in the late summer he will look to get a run with the horses and a story to tell in homeroom on Monday.

The 2017 McCormick Cup opened with a few first round upsets, but the number one seed moved on as expected. The game kicked off under a heat advisory, making conditions uncomfortable, and the ball slick. The Quins looked sharp off the wingeropening Janusz kick, running McNeill 2bounced off a few defenders and found Eric Howardphases before in space to score in the opening minute. It may have been a bit too easy, as the Quins then strung together an error filled half that saw them out of stride, moving the ball away from support at lethargic speed. The home side was up for the match, growing confidence from a series of penalties and a score that saw them keep things close, 26-

Report 13 at the half. 2nd half saw some fresh legs roll in, which helped change the Quins tone and straighten up the attack. Fewer penalties, more tackles and more rucks allowed the Quins to speed the tempo and left Ajax

holding the tackle bags for the last 40 Game minutes. 55-13 was the final, 5 more scores added to the tally and a good win to start the cup. No doubt the level will need to lift each week as the competition is now down to 8 clubs - all working hard to win the same game. None of the previous 15 games really matters - the best team on the park in the next 80 minutes is the one who gets to keep playing. McCormick Cup – Quarter Finals

With the season at stake, everyone playing this weekend has one job. Do - or die. It's no big secret what the home team is bringing to this one. The game plan - when the ball comes out of the ruck, we're going to be better than you. Offense - we'll attack more times than you can defend. Defense, we'll stop more phases than you can run. For 80 minutes - we will be better - or the season is over. With that being said, here’s who we have selected to be the better team. Cullen Fawcett leads off his 16th consecutive start of the season, in such good form we'll let him be #1. He'll partner with fellow bookend Graeme Mahar, who used brute strength to bend his #1 spot into a #3. Impressive feat of strength. Rounding out the trio, the coach slides into 2 - to get a closer look at the action. The Van Hornes set the tone from the 2nd row, Josh and Tom seeming to have a 'who can play better' contest over the last few weeks - and the top bunk is still up for grabs. Paul Auzins continues on form at 6 after a rest week last week, expect him to

Stoney Creek Camels Creek Stoney put himself to good use around the park. We stuffed a full physical presence into the 7 jersey this week, and named it Lucas McIvor - hope the jersey holds. Graham Mckelvey earns the start at 8 and continues on his path back to the game he missed last year. Schouten comes back in as the in form #9 and looks to fire fast service to a fully stocked back line fed by Nate Boeyenga in at #10 again this week. We brought in the DJ Stevie P for the final set last week - and looked like he was playing under a strobe light - one minute he was here, the next he was there - then he was gone. We're going to start the party right this week with the music man at 12 - laying the beat for the Skipper to run in his favored 13

position. Lineup vs Saturday September 30, 2017

McCormick Cup – Quarter Finals

The back three welcomes back Rory McDonell to fullback after a week of rest, he's ready for a shoot out with smoking guns at each hip - Fitzsimmons and Newman come in looking to add some dazzle to the razzle as they come through the line. The team sheet keeps rolling this week, as the fall now gives the Quins a new weapon - fresh legs off the bench. Expect these guys to come in early and often, and push the tempo on the visitors until it hurts. Matt Lindsay comes in as front row reserve #1, his big rumbling style isn't going to be easier to stop in the 2nd hour of the match. Bouk's work rate means the next man in will be wearing a Quins jersey in the final act - that can't hurt. Hayden Clarke plays his way into the front row reserve after smashing rucks against Ajax. Joe Yelle and Ben Tinevez come in as the 2nd row back row replacements, both play a strong support game and know how to get work done around the park. With all that mass in the pack, someone needs to pack some protein - so we'll add a combo #5 and supersize the fries and drink - and give the visitors a

Stoney Creek Camels Creek Stoney 2nd half sampling. Backline cover is a versatile mix of positional talent, youth, wisdom and speed. The Doctor's experience takes the lead, Maahs on call to cover 9-15, while Janusz, McIssac and Thomas are called on for back three cover. That leaves one spot to cover the centers, and Braden Stubel answers the Cup call - and leaves his business card in the kitchen.

The conditions were prime for cup rugby on Saturday - dry and cool and a flat and fast home pitch - and the Quins took advantage. The visitors put out a solid effort right from the opening kick, organized defense making the Quins work to earn territory. It took a while for the Quins to breach, but as planned, the pressure resulted in points. A missed shot at goal by the Creek was quickly turned into 7 points at the other end, followed shortly by a 2nd try, and that momentum carried the first half. The Quins came out ahead 4 tries to 1 and with a fresh band of horses yet to get a run, looked comfortable doing so. The halftime chat - discipline is important.

Report The 2nd half saw the game continue as a good physical back and forth, but the Quins would play the better rugby on offer. The forwards established dominance in the first half, and let that play out on the score sheet, several tries scored by members of the pack crashing across the goal line. The reserves came in and

McCormick Cup – Semi-Finals

It's the last home game of the season, and it promises to be the biggest test of

2017. Last year's semi final saw the Quins grind out a physical 4 point win, and this year promises to be no different. The last time the Quins met the Irish in the Semi's, it was the Irish who came out on top on their way to lifting the cup back in 2013. A decade before that, it was the Quins who beat the Irish on their way to the 2003 cup. History lesson complete. This weekend, the entire club puts forward the best team we've got in search of a win. There are literally no other options at this point in the season. Be the best team over 80, or start training for 2018. The front row goes with the best of the season, Fawcett, Neill and Mahar will no doubt be looking to establish dominance up front, against what will likely be a heavy and solid Irish pack. The Van Horne twins get the nod in the engine room, and are set to appear menacing in the line out. The depth chart in the back row has come a long way since game one when it was a couple of converted backs at the top of the list. This week, Paul Auzins

earns the nod at 6, and Lucas McIvor continues to be a force in the 7 jersey. vs Markham vs Irish Graham Mckelvey takes some time off his usual job - scaring the bejesus out of little children - to continue the terror from number 8. #9 goes to the most fired up guy in the squad - FCFF Adam Schouten lives for the big games, and he'll spin tight service to a pretty class backline lead by Nate Boeyenga at 10. The centre combo looks more

Lineup dangerous than a summer social bonfire, as we cue the lights and lazers and go full smoke show for the DJ Stevie P with the skipper Hugh Saturday October 14, 2017 McCormick Cup – Semi-Finals McDonell cutting rug and dicing lines to the beat at 13.

The back three has become the deepest spot in the roster, which comes in handy with the loss of Fitzsimons who took the face first route a bit too literally. Joe Newman earns a start on the blind wing, while Dylan Mundy sets up for a few reps on the open side line, with Adam Maahs spotting form. Rory McDonell settles in at 15 and will no doubt be looking to get some ball in hand. The bench is going to be in early and often, as the boys will look to increase the pace of the game as the visiting team tires. Big Matt Lindsay (3 kids) brings heavyweight experience that will be important in the last 30 minutes - and we'll be sending the guys on the field some of the Colonel's juiciest chicken to keep the protein synthesis going in the last half hour of the match. Joe Yelle has looked fleet of foot in the later stages this season, so expect him to show his range off the bench. Casey Bouk only has one speed, and he's going to use it to create chaos for the visitors. Ben Tinevez has been a consistent selection in the later half of the season, and will no doubt be looking for his first run in a cup semifinal. Dr. Maahs will take some reps once Mundy no longer needs a spot for his heavy curls, and Janusz McNeill continues to build form as the weather begins to suit his learned playing style. Ryan Blunt makes the switch from forward to back - just vs Markham vs Irish padding his Beauty status. Mitch McIssac has shown well in the later stages of the season and earns another run with the boys in the fall, while Zack Thomas earns a spot to keep the boys up to date on what the kids are into these days. Both teams come into this one tied, all previous records and results are out the window and it will be the better team over 80 minutes that moves on to the cup final.

Expect nothing less than a hard hitting back and forth Lineup match up between two teams that know how to win, and what it feels like to lose. Don't expect anyone to give an inch. Saturday October 14, 2017 McCormick Cup – Semi-Finals

The way it was predicted to unfold, the visiting team would stand in for an hour of physicality and the difference would be the home team capitalizing on opportunities in the later stages. The script that played out came to the same conclusion, we just never factored in Donny and Brook on the team sheet. The Quins got to test their defense early, visitors with an early shot ata sloppy take from the opening kick saw goal before a tackle had eventhe been made. The first series of tackles off the restart saw the Irish ball carriers knocked backwards in every carry Report before the Quins were caught off side. And with that, the tone was set. The teams continued to trade shots back and forth, and the lack of scoring from either side Game seemed to build the tension. A bit of niggle snuck into the play off the ball, and the tackles started to slide up with aggression. And then Don and Brook got involved. Hard to say it's the wrong thing to do when you play as a team. And of course you always protect the captain. But the net result of the knuckles chucked saw both Donny and Brook off Saturday October 14, 2017 McCormick Cup – Semi-Finals off the park, the latter for the final hour of the match. And the hill just got a little tougher to climb. The Quins to their part, have practiced playing short, in poor conditions, against a of defense. So whenwall the challenge was laid, the boys answered back short handed, scoring a try and penalty to take an 8 point lead into the half. The halftime chat - Keep it simple, build pressure and trust the rugby. Playing short for the full 2nd half, the Quins extended the lead, but the Irish drew to within a score after a long break against the run of play. Tough to say what turned, but the Quins went at it, the pack's defense and dominance in the sets earning a turn over and some territory, and then the backline went to work. The Irish defense had to this point been blitzing with success, but as

Report the legs wore down, the line staggered, allowing Boeyenga to make a break, and just like that, the ball went through the hands in one of the best draw pass moves of the season, the ball made it across the try line and a beauty score. The Quins took the ball back into the Irish end, and again, a line break well supported saw Rory over for 7 points. Not to be outdone, the pack went to work, a series of mauls

and penalties earned them an attacking scrum, and the shove went Game on. Four guys got in the car on Saturday and headed to the pitch. That was the start of the Brantford Harlequins back in 1950. Ballsy to turn up for a 15's game and stand there in short shorts (the old kind) with 3 friends to take on a pack of 15. But it's the kind of team people want to join.

This Saturday the Harlequins send 2 busloads, and a team of 25 to the biggest game of the year. Because the club lifts the cup. It's set to be a classic match up, Quins v Beach has always been entertaining if nothing else. The Beach have been here before, and know what it takes to win a final. Expect the tries of summer rugby mixed with the smash of the fall season. Some of the fans are still sore from last

weekend's smack. LineupBalmy vs Beach

Here is your best 25 of the season. The front row starts heavy, and no one fills that role better than Cullen Fawcett who's named as the in form front rower this season.

He's joined by NSMT hooker Eric Howard, who earns selection based on his form against Tonga 'A' last week. Nice to see you finally wearing 2, Eric.

Graeme Mahar takes his spot at Tighthead, which is bad news for the Beach body on the other side. Look away if you're squeamish, it's not easy watching another guy get hit

with a wrench for 80 minutes. LineupBalmy vs Beach

Saturday October 21, 2017 McCormick Cup – Final The Van Horne Twins have played a step above this season, single handedly (in fairness, they are a pair, so it's more like double handedly - 4 hands is a distinct advantage) terrorizing the line out and backing a dominant front row. Throw in some thick tackles and the odd line break, and you've got a quality set of locks there.

The back row has really raised the bar for themselves over the past 2 seasons, and it's not going to be any different this weekend. Auzins continues his form at 6, while McIvor continues as an absolute force wearing 7.

McKelvey's hasn't looked better than playing at the back last weekend, his first career push LineupBalmy vs Beach over try called a penalty try instead just means he's got one more in the bag this week.

Adam Schouten started the season at number 6, and flips that on its head to stand in as the best 9 in the province this weekend. Kid was born to play cup rugby. He'll spin

lazers to Nate Boeyenga who earns the spot at first receiver for a wicked backline.

The DJ Stevie P showed last week that even in his 30's he's still hip to the beat, laying tracks down in time to start the backline party in the 2nd half. The skipper Hugh McDonell retains his spot at 13 this week after his play helped punch a ticket to the final. The guy

LineupBalmy vs Beach wearing the C has to be the first name you'd pick on any team sheet.

Saturday October 21, 2017 McCormick Cup – Final

The back three sees a new face into the blind side wing jersey, but we had to include him somewhere - Jordan Kozina is currently working his way through customs, and we've

sent Goodrow to pick him up - so it's still not a guarantee but expect the kid to look good wearing 11.

He's joined by Dylan Mundy on the open side and the fullback goes to Rory McDonnell, who continues on

Saturday October 21, 2017 McCormick Cup – Final

With so much talent available this week, we're naming 10 subs and we'll narrow to 8 for kickoff. Big Matt Lindsay (3 kids) is an easy selection into a cup side, he's a large big game player and good to have on

the park in the later stages. He's also the guy that keeps the coach from being the oldest guy in the team. In at 2nd oldest, doing his best Eric Howard impression (coming off the bench), the coach runs at reserve hooker with a 30% chance of prop. The Doctor comes in as the utility back, covering everywhere but 1st receiver, and brings a decade of wisdom and a PhD to the team - instantly upping the average IQ. Janusz McNeill had a slow start to the season but earns his spot after showing well on the wing Connor Fitzsimmons IR down the stretch.

Joe Yelle and Mitch McIssac take the game day reserve spots - tough to miss out on a spot in the side but no less a part of the effort. Honorable mention to the Wills who would otherwise be in contention if not for that other game.

We'll let the video do the talking for this one, instead we've taken some extra Report time to reflect on the run. Looking back, it has been an incredible amount of effort. 60+ registered members training through the off season, coming together twice a week to prepare for 14 regular season games and 4 rounds of playoffs, for more than a few years. The best place to start is recognizing the effort of the club supporters. There's the obvious ones, the guys who cut the grass, stock the bar, run the executive, mini's coaches, etc. There is also the help from the families that let these people go to put the work in. Schedules flex and revolve around commitment the rugby club - it's not always easy, but the collective effort has produced some pretty great

results. And for that we say thanks. A lot of people have stepped up their game to make this team successful over the past few seasons. A lot more people had a hand in shaping the rugby culture and environment for Brantford rugby to thrive. But the only name that deserves recognition above the rest is George Jones. He provided the dirt (literally), planted the seeds and raised the original crop that have continued on to create a place where the rugby is free to watch, and

Report fun to play. The best thanks we can give are to make it a better place for the next crop. Hope the Cups help too. The current crop have built a name for themselves by winning rugby games. The hope is that they are remembered not by the number of games won, or cups lifted, but by the way that it was

Game accomplished. A group of guys, putting the team above themselves, and devoting the entire 80 minutes of effort to the rugby. Respect the opponent, and the Official, by playing the best game you can, and most importantly, do it with class.

Saturday October 21, 2017 McCormick Cup – Final 15 guys who'd rather tackle and pass than score. Or sometimes 14 guys to tackle and pass, and one guy who's just here to scrummage. Tough on defense, fast on offense - it's a great game when it's played at maximum volume. That's the bar we will continue to try and clear, and the footprint in the dirt we'll strive to stamp - until the next crop rolls over. It won't always be Brantford that plays the best rugby - but the next team that does is going to have to

Report do it better than this. Until then we will continue our effort to raise the bar - and play the rugby - and share a beer in George's

Basement. Game

Saturday October 21, 2017 Former Canada rugby captain Aaron Carpenter retires after string of head injuries

While his health was the main factor in Carpenter’s retirement decision, he also said he wanted to leave the game at the right time knowing a younger generation of players is coming through.

Listed at six foot and 235 pounds, Carpenter was a tough ball of muscle who often looked to run through opponents rather than around them. He is Canada’s all-time caps leader with 80. (COURTESY OF RUGBY CANADA)

Former Canadian rugby captain Aaron Carpenter, Canada’s all-time caps leader with 80, has retired after a string of head injuries. The 34-year-old from Brantford, Ont., played in three World Cups, a hard-charging back-row forward and hooker who always led by example. Carpenter broke World Rugby Hall of Famer Al Charron’s Canadian caps record when he earned his 77th in a loss to Romania in June 2017. He made his debut in May 2005 against U.S. and last represented Canada in November when he suffered a head injury in a win over Spain. It was the third head injury in a short stretch of time, with the other two coming in club play with England’s Doncaster Knights. “They weren’t the hardest of hits,” Carpenter said in an interview. “I just thought if there is something going on, I need to stop playing this game and not put myself in any more risk for injury. I have a family.” “I just think the risk factor of continuing to play a tough game like rugby, putting my body on the line further just wasn’t worth it for me,” he added. He had other concussions earlier in his career, when head injuries were not understood as they are now. “You got your bell rung and you went back out there and played,” he said. While the issue of concussions is treated far more seriously these days, Carpenter says they are still hard to comprehend because “you don’t see the injury.” “My arm’s not in a cast or something,” said Carpenter, who still feels concussion-related symptoms. “People overlook it and they expect you to be the person you were before the injuries.” Listed at six foot and 235 pounds, Carpenter was a tough ball of muscle who often looked to run through opponents rather than around them. Carpenter is tied for fourth in Canadian try-scoring and leads all Canadian forwards with 17 international tries, the last coming at the 2015 World Cup when he bulled his way over the goal-line against France. The 2011 World Cup remains his favorite tournament, taking place in the rugby hotbed of New Zealand. “We were getting stopped in the street for kids who wanted to do hakas for us,” he recalled. Carpenter scored a try in a memorable 25-20 win over Tonga in Whangarei. “Aaron was amazing,” said former Canadian winger , who roomed with Carpenter when they played for English club side Coventry. “He’s always been such a great player. He’s always no-nonsense, just gets to work. Whatever you’ve got to do, you’ve got to do. There’s no complaining,” he added. While his health was the main factor in his retirement decision, Carpenter also said he wanted to leave the game at the right time knowing a younger generation of players is coming through. “I’ve had a good run and I was really thankful ... I didn’t want to hang on too long,” he said. Carpenter also acknowledges a “bit of relief” in his decision. “From when I started playing rugby to where it is now, the injuries have gotten worse and worse. I don’t know. The guys are getting bigger, stronger, faster.” He put his body on the line and paid the price. He broke both arms and routinely wakes up to a sore back. “It takes its toll. It’s a career of 13 years of getting beat up basically. But I wouldn’t change it. The experiences I’ve had. I’ve got to travel the world. I’ve got to meet some pretty outstanding people. “If I have to pay for that with a few years of being sore and pain, I think it’s worth it.” Carpenter played club rugby in England for Coventry, Plymouth Albion, Cornish Pirates, London Welsh and Doncaster. “I got to see my fair share of England, saw the sights and got to know the people,” he said. “It was a good time but it was good that it’s come to an end because you get homesick for a while and we were at that point.” Carpenter, whose wife is a teacher in suburban Toronto, has his hands full with three kids aged one, three and five. But he says the retirement has yet to sink in. “It doesn’t feel like it’s over yet because (it feels like) it’s vacation mode,” he said. He still hopes to stay involved with rugby and currently is working with the Ontario Arrows team. Rugby Canada was quick to pay tribute to Carpenter, who captained Canada on more than two dozen occasions. “On behalf of the Rugby Canada board of directors I would like to congratulate Aaron on his impressive career,” chairman Tim Powers said in a statement. “He also deserves our deep thanks for the commitment he made to his country and rugby in Canada.” “Aaron has been a true servant to Canadian Rugby for over a decade,” added Rugby Canada CEO Allen Vansen. “For a Canadian to win 80 caps is an incredible achievement and Aaron always represented his country with honour, pride and respect, especially doing so as captain on a number of occasions.” How committed was Carpenter? He came out of the stands for a 2015 test match against Samoa when Richard Thorpe went down with back spasms 20 minutes before kickoff. Carpenter, who had been given the day off, put down his beer, left his family and borrowed another player's boots for a seat on the bench. Less than 10 minutes into the BMO Field match, Thorpe's replacement Thyssen de Goede was injured and Carpenter had to come in. Canada lost 21-20 on a last-second try with Carpenter excelling.
