It was indeed a year of some important firsts. For the first time ever both our Women’s and Men’s Sevens Teams each won a World A MESSAGE Series Sevens tournament. The women captured gold in Sydney and the men took first in Singapore. Both teams also improved on their own Canada Sevens results with our women winning silver on home FROM THE soil and our men making it through to the quarterfinals. Speaking of Canada Sevens, Rugby Canada in 2017 began the process of securing the highly successful CHAIRMAN tournament for another four years. Canada Sevens is exposing rugby to more Canadians, generating new growth potential for the sport and becoming an important gathering place for the community. This past year saw the completion of the Al Charron Rugby Canada National Training Centre. This facility built through the generous support of the Government of Canada, the City of Langford and numerous private donors will house our various national team athletes. It is a state of the art centre that will allow our Canadian athletes to prepare for the rigors of global competition.

The problem is not in the crisis itself, because it can be resolved quietly behind closed doors. But rumors can easily shatter morale by creating unnecessary concern amongst the public. Rumors are known as a means of psychological war- fare. This makes it a threat to small societies such as ours, especially when some add their own views, wishes or comments as reliable sources. There is no doubt that news spreads quickly today, whether bad or good, due to the presence of social media and the proliferation of satellite TV and a large number of mobile devices. The rumor may be military, political, economic or social, but remains a method of psychological warfare. These days, because of the volatile situation in the Gulf region, rumors abound, touching events such as war and political relations, which affects people and what goes on behind closed doors. It is difficult to read the political scene and economic situation in the Gulf region because it is not possible to predict what could really happen in the next few months and what the situation will be.

And on goes the fight. Mckelvey and Howard have kept up a good winter paddock at Goodrow Stables and the horses have been training Rocky Russian Winter style. A first inning rain delay meant an extra 2 weeks left in the stall for good measure. Expect both teams to be hot to trot on Saturday. The captaincy moves up 2 jerseys and an age grade to the other McDonell brother. Expect a lot of plays to run through #13 again - and people named McDonell to score tries. The front row has expanded - while still looking trim. Matt Lindsay takes a summer vacation to open up some game time for Cullen, Big George and Johnny Evans - while Mahar looks to rotate across to the hooker position to give him more energy to explore creativity in his loose play. Yikes. The Van Horne's come off a bulking cycle and straight into the season, and are being pushed hard by intern Killboy Francis who has been hitting bags in the basement all season. The back row will see a good mix of young and old, with a side of Bouk - expect a lot of rotation on either side of McKelvey. Halfbacks, we have a few of 'em. Schouten, Piatek, Boeyenga and MacArthur can form a multiple of 9/10 combinations - we'll probably test all of them just for fun.
