Ltd., Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India [email protected] Available online at: www.isca.in, www.isca.me Received 1th June 2016, revised 11 th October 2016, accepted 12 th November 2016 Abstract A study was conducted to estimate the distribution and diversity of tree species in Chilika lake ecosystem, the largest lagoon in Asia. The present study was conducted in 2014 by laying out quadrats of desired size to estimate the diversity of tree species in three of the four ecological sectors namely northern, central and southern sector. A total of 69 tree species representing 57 genera and 33 families were recorded from the three ecological secto rs of Chilika. Among the three ecological sectors, northern sector was found superior in terms of species richness and diversity with 46 tree species per hectare of area. The total dominance of northern sector was also highest i.e. 36.35m 2/ha. Among the sp ecies documented, maximum value of Importance Value Index (IVI) was reported in Teak (21.69) followed by Casuarina (19.02) and Sal (14.95) respectively. The Shannon-Weiner Index value was found in the range of 1.5 to 3.5. It was observed that species diver sity in the ecological sectors is substantially influenced by intensity of human interference in and around them. -

Central University, Hyderabad 500 046, India (Received August 21, 2009; Accepted October 5, 2009) A phototrophic gammaproteobacterium designated strain JA395T was isolated from a sediment sample collected from the coast of Birds’ Island in the southern sector of Chilika Lagoon, India. The bacterium is a Gram-negative, motile coccus with a single polar fl agellum. Bacteriochloro- phyll a, and lycopene as major carotenoid. C16:0 , C16:1ω7c/C16:1ω6c and C18:1ω7c are the major cellular fatty acids of strain JA395T. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain JA395T clusters with those of species of the genus Thiorhodococcus belonging to the class Gammaproteobacteria. The highest sequence similarities of strain JA395T were found with the type strains of Thiorho- dococcus minor (96.8%), Thiorhodococcus mannitoliphagus (96.3%), Thiorhodococcus bheem- licus (95.8%), “Thiorhodococcus drewsii” (95.4%), and Thiorhodococcus kakinadensis (95.0%). The genomic DNA base composition of strain JA395T (=KCTC 5710T=NBRC 104958T) was 57.8 mol% G + C (by HPLC). Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, morphological and physiological characteristics, strain JA395T is suffi ciently different from other Thiorhodo- coccus species and we describe this as a new species, Thiorhodococcus modestalkaliphilus sp. -

Strain AK35T was Gram-negative, motile, purple colored, containing bacteriochlorophyll a and the carotenoid rhodopinal as major photosynthetic pigments. Strain AK35T was able to grow photoheterotrophically and could utilize a number of organic substrates. It was unable to grow photoautotrophically. Strain AK35T was able to utilize sulfide and thiosulfate as electron donors. The main fatty acids present were identified as C16:0, C18:1 T 7c and C16:1 7c and/or iso-C15:0 2OH (Summed feature 3) were identified. -
