Based at the University of Glasgow and run by graduate students, it aims to provide a critical but supportive entry to academic publishing for emerging academics, including postgraduates and recent postdoctoral students. [email protected] eSharp Issue 14: Imagination and Innovation Eurovision in Moscow: Re-imagining Russia on the Global Stage Paul Jordan (University of Glasgow) This article considers how the Eurovision Song Contest has come to be used by participating countries as a platform for image-building and identity politics. With particular focus on the 2009 contest, this article explores the debates which surrounded the event which was staged in Moscow. The programme is often dismissed as a kitsch and not very serious event in the UK (West 2006), yet even a brief examination of the contest’s history shows that it has in fact had tremendous economic, political and socio-cultural significance for a number of European countries (Jordan 2005, p.51-53). The 2009 event was dubbed ‘the Beijing Olympics of Eurovision’ (Norton 2009) given the spectacle and scale which were like no other before. It was widely seen by media commentators as an opportunity to promote a positive image of Russia to the international media and therefore to the imaginations of millions of viewers (Malpas 2009).
