In isolation it is difficult to adequately assess the key variables behind why something did not happen, but when compared to a similar violent case, this form of academic exercise can be greatly beneficial. This thesis demonstrates what we can learn from studying ‘negative cases’ - nationalist movements that abstain from political violence - particularly with regards to how the state should respond to minimise the likelihood of violent activity, as well as the interplay of societal factors in the initiation of violent revolt. This is achieved by considering the cases of Wales, England and Scotland, the latter of which recently underwent a referendum on independence from the United Kingdom (accomplished without the use of political violence) and comparing them with the national movement in Ireland, looking at both violent and non-violent manifestations of nationalism in both territories. -

Rethinking the traditional periodisation of the Scots language Joanna Kopaczyk 1 The aims of the paper Drawing timelines and setting boundaries between stages in language history is an arbitrary exercise. As Görlach warns in a footnote to his periodisation of the language of advertising, ‘[a]ll period boundaries in historical disciplines are open to objections’ (2002a: 102, fn.1), of which the author of the present paper is very much aware. Languages change gradually and therefore their historical development is a continuum, rather than a set of chronologically ordered neat and homogenous boxes, divided by clear-cut borders. Such borders create a certain illusion of well-defined stages in language history; therefore, they should be based on firm language-internal and extra-linguistic criteria, allowing the temporal continuum to be ‘chopped up’ in a systematic and justifiable manner into more manageable chunks. Periodisation is useful because it allows observing both focal points on the timeline as well as transitional periods. It also creates a framework of reference for comparative purposes: either in a diachronic perspective within a single language, or in a cross-linguistic perspective, when juxtaposing two or more languages at a given stage in history. In this paper I would like to reconsider the most popular, one may say, traditional periodisation of the Scots language (Aitken 1985: xiii), using extra-linguistic and intra-linguistic criteria. One of the reasons why such an analysis seems worthwhile is that certain labels applied to the stages in the history of Scots, for instance the ‘Middle Scots period’, seem to escape such criteria and create an anachronistic picture of Scots. -

Scottish parochial education in the 19th century has its roots in the Reformation. The Scots Confession of 1560 and the First Book of Discipline furnish the doctrine and ground-plan for an educational system which evolved over three centuries. Behind these documents lies the teaching of John Calvin, who inspired Knox to plan for 'the virtuous education and godly upbringing of the youth of this realm,' and to make every citizen in the commonwealth ’a p ro fitab le member w ithin the s-me.’ At the beginning of the 19th century the Church was in control of education by means of i t s p arish schools, or through Assembly end Society schools. -

The Saltire Society Literary Awards, 1936-2015: A Cultural History Stevie Marsden A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Publishing Studies University of Stirling 2016 2 Abstract This thesis presents a history of the Saltire Society Literary Awards and examines their status and role within Scotland’s literary and publishing culture. The Society was founded at a critical inter-war period during which Scottish writers, artists and cultural commentators were re-imagining Scotland’s political and cultural identity. The Society, therefore, was a product of this reformative era in Scotland’s modern history. The Society’s identity and position within this inter- and post-war reformation is reflected in the Literary Awards, which are a means by which the Society attempts to accomplish some of its constitutional aims. The purpose of this thesis is three-fold. Firstly, it has filled a conspicuous gap in modern Scottish cultural history by offering a historically accurate description of the founding of the Saltire Society in 1936 and the development of the Society’s Literary Awards up until 2015. Secondly, this thesis demonstrates how the Society’s Literary Awards function in relation to key critical discourses pertinent to contemporary book award culture, such as forms of capital, national identity and gender. Finally, this thesis proffers an in-depth analysis of book award judgment culture. Through an analysis of the linguistic and social interactions between Saltire Society Literary Award judges, this thesis is the first study of its kind which considers exactly how literary award judging panels facilitate the judgement process. -

Firstly, that it would find that Robert Bruce only existed in the shadow of his predecessor in Scotland’s fight against England, the purer patriot William Wallace (d. 1305). Secondly, in working through works of the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth- centuries, that it would find that Bruce’s image had become fossilised as a result of the acceptance and perpetuation by writers like Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) of Archdeacon John Barbour’s poem, The Bruce, of the 1370s. A glance at the struc- ture of most works on Bruce from the late fourteenth-century to the present seems to justify this fear. Barbour’s poem, some 14,000 lines long, takes over three-quarters of its length to follow Bruce from his seizure of the throne in 1306 through many struggles to his triumph in battle against England at Bannockburn in 1314: the remaining fifteen years of «Good King Robert’s» reign is then covered quickly by Barbour (Duncan, 1997). -

FOREWORD Dr. Alexander Whyte held that James Fraser of Brea was one of the ablest men in a time of able men, and that hie high and abiding value stood in this, that he turned his great intellectual gifts so powerfully to the interests of experimental religion. He confessed that Fraser was one of his prime favourites, and always stood at his elbow beside Augustine, Bunyan, Baxter, Edwards, Boston, Shepard, and Halyburton. Apart, however, from Dr. Whyte's own series of devotional addresses, published in 1911 with the title James Fraser, Laird of Brea, no study on any considerable scale either of Fraser himself, or of his theology and influence has yet appeared. References to him, of course, abound in the literature of the period, and since the publication of his works at intervals in the course of the first fifty years of the eighteenth century almost all who have written about the Scottish Church or about the development of Scottish Theology from the time of the Revolution Settlement have had something to say about him, but only a very few of these references are really helpful. -

Gregory Kratzmann Political Satire and the Scottish Reformation Political satire, whether written in prose or verse, whether written in 1560 or 1960, tends to have a very short shelf-life-the interest and rele vance of the subjects addressed diminish very rapidly when they are no longer topical, unless (as in the case of Swift or Orwell) those subjects are clad in particularly beguiling fictional dress. When constructing a text of Ane Satyre of the Thrie Estaitis, George Bannatyne saw fit to leave out what he describes as "the grave mater thairof, becaws the samyne abuse is weill reformit in Scotland," and to preserve in his anthology "only sertane mirry interludis thairof, very plesand. "I This was done little more than a decade after the 1552 performance of the play. The probability that Bannatyne's practice as an editor reflects a conservative political stance-if not anti Reformist at least pro-Marian2-highlights another challenge offered by pol itical satire, which is that the polemical satire of one historical moment is open to reinterpretation by the readers and writer of later periods.
